Apple to sell a $99 4GB iPhone at Walmart?

We just got a tip that in addition to the iPhone 3G actually making its way to Walmart, as we exclusively told you, there will be a 4GB model priced at $99 with a 2-year agreement. We’re not putting our stamp of approval behind this one just yet as the tipster isn’t listed in our BGR’s Guide to respected Ninjas handbook, but it does make you think, doesn’t it? Now, we all know Apple dropped the 4GB iPhone from its initial line-up, but that was at a $399 price-point. 4GB is certainly enough for some songs and short music videos, but let’s not kid ourselves. Anyone looking to spend $99 on an iPhone probably doesn’t care that much about storage anyway and they’ll be more than happy to drop that amount for one of the best-selling smartphones in the country. Just don’t hate us if this doesn’t happen, we warned you. Thoughts?

Thanks for the workbook pics, BC!

And they won’t sell it without you getting at least the $30/month data plan.

I have a 4GB 1st gen iPhone and have been very happy with it. Smartphone? Not a smartphone? Drank the Kool-Aid…whatever.

I was a Blackberry user for years and preferred the UI and design of the iPhone. Period.

As far as it being a status symbol? That’s a little odd to me. I never thought of it as one. I saw it as a mobile device that made certain aspects of my life more convenient and I enjoyed using it. Mine is so scarred up and dented – it’s embarrassing. :)

Anyway, I agree with another post that the 4GB iPhone for $99 may very well be refurbed 1st Gens. I, personally, would drop $99 on either if I could avoid renewing the contract. If I’m gonna’ do that – I’m goin’ for a 3G with more memory (though the 4GB has been plenty for apps, music and movies).

As a former employee of Walmart (Electronics dept manager), I am a little concerned about Apple getting into bed with Wally. Most Walmart electronics are “W” coded. This means that the manufacturers have negotiated a different unit price for Walmart so the retail giant can have the lowest price and the highest gross profit. Sometimes, to do this, the manufacturer has to reduce his cost on building the product (i.e., cheaper components). It is not uncommon to be told by a company’s customer service department that the product you purchased from Walmart is not supported and that you’ll need to take it back to the store. Beware the “W” in the serial/model number.

For people like me who are over 50, a $99 iPhone makes sense. Let’s face it. Most folks in my demographic aren’t downloading huge numbers of mp3’s tunes or mp4 videos from the internet, so a 4GB limit is no big deal. I do agree with the others that the data plan needs to come down in price.

I am going to miss my special cell phone with the rotary dial on it. :-)

With Iphone’s ease of use, compared to other smartphones, they will sell like crazy. The plan prices have come down, but they need to enlarage their network

    Meg-

Is there a specific application I need to download to make the iPhone a chick magnet? When I read Plumber’s comments I ran out and bought one (16gig, ‘cuz bigger is better i heard) and now you are saying it will not have the desired “result”. Bummer.

I thought all the Grrls would come up to me and say “Is that an iPhone in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?”

I already had my Deion Sanders response ready…

BOTH! (old Pizza Hut commercial line)…

    hehehehe

It is still a great idea, I don’t think the price point is sustainable. It has got to cost a lot more to produce even with the 2 year contract!
