Apple to sell a $99 4GB iPhone at Walmart?

We just got a tip that in addition to the iPhone 3G actually making its way to Walmart, as we exclusively told you, there will be a 4GB model priced at $99 with a 2-year agreement. We’re not putting our stamp of approval behind this one just yet as the tipster isn’t listed in our BGR’s Guide to respected Ninjas handbook, but it does make you think, doesn’t it? Now, we all know Apple dropped the 4GB iPhone from its initial line-up, but that was at a $399 price-point. 4GB is certainly enough for some songs and short music videos, but let’s not kid ourselves. Anyone looking to spend $99 on an iPhone probably doesn’t care that much about storage anyway and they’ll be more than happy to drop that amount for one of the best-selling smartphones in the country. Just don’t hate us if this doesn’t happen, we warned you. Thoughts?

Thanks for the workbook pics, BC!

    The iPhone 3g will be released at Walmart nationwide on December. 28th. I work for walmart and attended the iPhone training at AT&T Training facility today in Cerritos,CA. We weren’t told about a 4gb though. They said we will be having the 8gb and 16gb iPhone in black and white but prices are yet to be disclosed.

    break your contract, it will make you happy.

    @stan
    Android is running on iPhones out there. PS-I never signed any contracts to get my iPhone, its called buying without a contract.

    Nobody has even thought to think that maybe these 1st or 2nd gen 4gb phones(i’m leaning towards 1st gen 4gb if it really happens) will be sold, wait for it….WITHOUT DATA PLANS….? If they can make a 2nd gen phone able to swith on and off 3G, then why can’t they make a lesser phone that works strictly on wi-fi for those kinds of things. Basically like an iPod Touch with a phone and only a phone. There are millions out there that would go for this. Why not?

    PS-the plumbers i know make bank. the one on here just makes stinky.

    At whom would selling the $99 iPhone be targeted? If they can get this deal out in the next week or so, I see it targeted at short-sighted gift givers who do not care what the data plan costs – they expect the gift recipient to pick up that tab. The giver may think it is an awesome gift to give. The recipient might think otherwise.

    The iPhone is worthless as an iPod for me. None offer enough storage. However, 4G offers plenty of space for apps.

    $99? Still too much for Apple crap.

    I will never get an iAnything unless it’s free.

    Played with a friend’s iPod and iPhone, hate them both. Give me Windows Mobile and Android anyday.

    Im dying for them to put out a discount iphone. I can’t find the 4gb iphone in a decent shape on ebay. But i remember that the last time i checked they were going for like 120 used, jailbroken and with no contract. But that was a long time ago and cell phone prices have gone up since then.

    So i do hope they bring out cheap iphones cause i don’t store music since i drive a lot and all i need is email and data plan and im good to go.

    Go wallmart Go…lol

    Who cares? I could care less if I spend $199 or $99 for my phone It’s the hundred dollars a month I’ll end up paying for a decent phone plan with data – that’s what bothers me. That’s $1200 a year plus the purchase price of $99 to $199 dollars, so $1300 to $1400. 1,300 a year for absolutely nothing that any other existing smartphone can’t do except have a prettier web browser. You can keep your iPhone; I’ll keep my first-born.

    It’s sad to see people who really think getting the iphone makes them cool and help pick up chicks.

    I have a simple suggestion for those iphone 3G users how feel that if everyone could afford an iphone it will somehow take away from their coolness. Sell your iphone 3g and get this iphone and use the money left over and go to colorwears and get it customized. Make it a one of a kind iphone and tell all your friends that this is the new iphone 4G. Wow 4G you are cool again.

    Have to agree that the G1 isn’t very pretty, but I think they more wanted to show off its functionality.

    I am waiting impatiently for the upcoming android phones. Asus will be coming out with one early next year, and hopefully it will hit the US soon. It looks much better than the G1. Motorola is also coming out with one sometime next year, an upscale G1 that costs a little less.

    read up. why wait, you can have Android on the iPhone. There are already iPhones running most of the Android platform successfully. People think the iPhone is a “smartphone”, but really, its a pocket computer.

    Any word on the price for just the phone since I can’t upgrade on my AT&T service for a fair price until February? Will someone please explain to me why I can’t buy a new phone at the same price as a new contract customer and just have them tack on another 2 years?????!!!!

    LOL at the cunt that continues to call me an elitist & other supporters…,

    Like seriously get a life or something…I think a 4gig iPhone is pointless and if you can’t afford to pay what you would for tv actual 4 gig every month (which will be the vast majority of people who actually plan on purchasing won’t)

    Why waste your time?

    @Rune
    you can get the 1st gen iPhone at anytime and uprgrade your contract right then and there. After that, I believe you can go ahead and upgrade again to the 2nd gen iPhone. I broke my first iPhone and had to re-up my two years when I got my new iPhone again. Its like nobody knew that you could upgrade to the iPhone at any time. People were waiting to uprgrade and I didn’t understand why, when they could have upgraded to the iPhone at any point in their plan.

    Has anybody thought or considered that on December 28, Apple will also drop the price of the 8GB to $99, drop the price of the 16GB to $199, and introduce a 32GB at $299?

    The manual looks fake, the logos for At&T and Walmart are odd looking and off centered. Also, I don’t think Apple would make jack from the data svc of end-users signing up via Walmart.

    I see Apple working with VZN before they look at Walmart. The manual with the logos looks odd and off centered and reminds me back in late 2004 the rumors of Google Notbook at Walmart for $99 – then tow years later it was a pda/smart pad think, then it was a cell phone.

    This seems fishy, who stands to gain by this rumor being out there right now? I would think Apple does, all those who might wait till 12/28 thinking maybe a discounted 8GB or 16GB price will see this and be more inclined to give up that hope and get the iPhone before X-Mas. This discourages most fence sitters, as most who read these sites online are not likely to ever be as interested in a 4GB iPhone.

    As many point out a 4GB cheaper iPhone would seemingly only be a huge hit with Walmart shoppers if they could also get a better data plan offer. One way they could do this would be to offer a hybrid deal, where you pay $15 min. a month on a 2 year contract deal for the first 1 GB of data and like $5 flat rate for any part of each 1GB the over the first 1GB and so on. This seems to make more sense as these are mostly buyers who have held off jumping on the iPhone wagon so far, and the

    I am still going to wait till Mr. Jobs next speach in just over 4 weeks now, and wait and see what Walmart and Costco do. I like many others I have read today at various sites would much prefre they drop the price of the 8GB and 16GB and add a 32GB for around $300.

    Like I said, consider the motives for why someone would float this out there. Several purported Walmart employees have said they went through the training just now and were told black 8GB and black & white 16GB, but they were told the prices were not determined or were withheld till announcement.

    @JakeyBoy

    The original-gen iPhone ‘loophole,’ buying/borrowing a 2G iPhone just to gain the lower pricing for the 3G model, stopped working around September. One of my friends attempted this using my original-gen iPhone and his upgrade date didn’t change (it’s supposed to change to being immediately eligible if the ‘loophole’ worked).

    It was never meant to work for anyone attaining the original-gen iPhone secondhand after [the second-gen came out in] July.
