Verizon Wireless Samsung Omnia unboxing

Samsung Omnia

While everybody else was out battling the crowds on Black Friday, we at BGR, well at least one of us, was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Verizon’s latest and greatest smartphone, the Samsung Omnia. We unboxed this beauty and took a few quick snapshots of the Verizon branded Omnia for you to drool over. So far, the Omnia does not disappoint. It is responsive, has an excellent camera interface, and that optical mouse is just awesome. Joining the Omnia in our repertoire of current phones is the HTC Touch Pro and the Samsung Saga making it a Verizon Wireless Windows Mobile threesome. What do you do when you have the three latest smartphones from Big Red? You pit them against each other to see which mobile machine reigns supreme. Hit us up in the comments with any questions that you want answered about these phones and we will try to answer them in our head to head… to head review next week. Until then, head over to the gallery and get a quick glimpse of the phone that is known as the Omnia.

great phone, i received it on black friday as well. i have own SEVERAL windows mobile phones from At&t and vzw, i must say this one is the best. i never though would convert to a full touch screen phone but after owning the eternity for a brief minute, i like using the touch keyboard after all. i also have owned my share of htc phone and honestly never liked any of them. my wife has the tilt and i have owned the vzw 6700, touch, 6800, fuse, but always switch to samsung win mobile, i730, i760, epix, and now the omnia. (would of kept the epix but keyboard lost fell of a few buttons after 1.5 weeks). ps wifi really works!!!(remove wifi power save option)

Nice to know Verizon has finally put out some decent competition to the touch screen market. Now if they can just stop being known for crippling hardware, I can buy with 100% confidence. I’ve been with VZW since and before the Sammy i700 (/w the swivel camera). I hate to have to wait and read 20+ reviews to find out if this or that is disabled or has been reduced (ahhem 192mb for HTC Pro?) Anyway looking forward to getting this phone soon. My i760 has been showing it’s aged for awhile now.

Mine is due to arrive by 3p today. No real trepidation, I currently own the i760, and have faith that I will love this little gem.

Too bad I didn’t see it in Canada. I am quite tired of my HTC Touch that lasts 15 hours on stand-by (with WiFi, BlueTooth and data connection off) and feels like it is ready to fall apart. Cannot wait for a good WM phone to show up.

So far I love the Omnia. I was able to get it in a Verizon Store Yesterday the 30th. The Wi-Fi worked great until I switched the toggle off, now I can’t get it to start again.

I noticed that this is the CDMA version and not the 3G. I also noticed that there IS a newer Omnia (with a different interface) released in South Korea. Does anyone know if a variant or newer version is supposed to head to AT&T? And PLEASE don’t reference the

@ Bdizzah: True, there is no built-in 3.5mm headphone jack, however, it does come with an adapter that works quite well.

I got my Omnia on black Friday and I’m not sold after using it all weekend. The phone keeps randomly shutting down. Is this a known problem with the Omnia or is it WM 6.1? I’m thinking about trading it in for the BB Storm. Any ideas?

Appreciate the love, but is this head to head to head thing going to be an actual review of all three phones? Or just a comparison?

I love an unbox… but I love a review even more.

I’ve heard of some odd issues with this phone but I’m sure they’ll get ironed out. As far as crippling goes the gps is locked to only be used with VZ navigator but I’ve heard that its already been cracked and works great with google. Interesting to me is the fact that on VZW website they have completely removed any mention of wifi.
@KCAinIOWA I’ve asked about slingplayer on half a dozen sites and have yet to get an answer. I got a feeling though its not going to work on the Omnia due to the screen size. Sling has said that they will have a blackberry beta player out before the end of the year (slingcommunity.com) and I heard varied reports of it working on the HTC after lots of tweaking.

    Darren says:

I’ve had the Omnia for some time (UK) and it’s my first WM device since the ipaq 3870. It’s definitely growing on me — clearly the Windows Mobile interface isn’t geared towards a touch screen though (roll on Windows Mobile 7?).

I like the flexibility of the platform and the fact I can write .net code for it, but I can imagine a “normal” user getting quite frustrated with it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I’m not currently looking to replace it with a Storm or iPhone any time soon, but my biggest complaint (and probably my only one to be honest) is regarding that weird Samsung connector. I can plug in my headphones (with a massive lump sticking out of the side), or I can plug it into a charger (USB or Mains), but not both at the same time. This is most likely not an issue for most, but I do conference calls whilst working from home using my mobile with headphones and if I run short of power…

And while we are at it, did the Samsung testers try putting the device in their pocket whilst listening to music — the connector has come out a couple of times blaring my music out to the masses (quite embarrasing I can tell you).

It is shockingly bad design, even I know that and I’m not a designer…

    Sorry for the long rant.

I’m looking forward to a review/comparison of the new VZW smartphones. I’d like to know how they compare on call quality, speed/sluggishness of the OS, and ease of use of common apps. Can’t wait!

    Who? says:

I’d like to know about the interaction between the 8gb onboard storage and the microsd card. In Windows Media Player will it show you on one screen all of your media or will you have to jump back and forth between lists of what’s onboard and lists of what’s on the sd card? On my Tilt I don’t see a way for it to display both the media on your phone and on the card at the same time.

Also, for everyone complaining about no headphone jack–it’s called Bluetooth Stereo. Try it. The lack of a multi-input adapter (like HTC has so you can charge and have an audio out at the same time) is concerning, but I assume one will be on the market shortly. HTC never included a multi-input adapater in the box; you always had to buy it separately from any number of accessory websites.

um yeah it says CDMA, which can be 3G (CDMA2000=EV-DO)
so i assume when you say 3G you mean HDSPA, or 3.5G.
    right?

Can you please compare these phones from a road warrior perspective. Feature reviews are nice but it’s more important to me to know whether I will be able to read the screen on a sunny day in a car, silence the ringer quickly in a meeting, or easily spell someone’s last name on my corporate voicemail than to spend valuable page space discussing the “slight lag” when the screen is turned sideways. Let’s be practical.

Regarding windowe media player, I have two devices that sync, so yes, I would have to swap between the two, but it’s not really an issue as it syncs automatically (unless I’m missing the point).

Re the headphones, it’s the same problem regarding power.

For practical use, we don’t get any sun in the uk, so it’s not a problem. Seriously though it’s no Nokia E-series in the sun, but I haven’t experienced any difficulty.

    Sent using Omnia.

I’ve had the phone for a few days now and I love it. However I am considering returning it due to a problem switching the wifi on and off. I have a friend that has had the same issue with the phone.

Unfortunately my wifi got stuck on and it sucks the battery dry.

Warning to others considering this phone (in America) it has some bugs to it. If it wasn’t for this, the phone would be perfect.
