BlackBerry Storm OS 4.7.0.76, other versions left dead in their tracks

What’s that? You somehow got a hold of the 4.7.0.75 OS for the BlackBerry Storm? Well, in this heavily-connected world we call BG Land, you’re already rockin’ something old. We’re running 4.7.0.76 on our Storm, and boy, does this thing improve a whole heap more than 4.7.0.75 did. Here’s a list of the improvements we’ve found (and bugs):
- For starters, switching portrait to landscape is even faster than on .75. We’re talking half a second to make a clean switch. No more “double keyboards” (half SureType, half QWERTY) on the screen.
- After around a full day of use, our battery is sitting pretty at 50%. This is probably a 25% increase over .65. We can’t say how much better it is than .75 since that wouldn’t be fair seeing as how it wasn’t in use for long, but we believe there will still be an improvement.
- There was this annoyance where you’d go to tap on an icon, it wouldn’t select if you tried to tap it fast. That’s all cleared up here…
- This was in .75, but DTMF tones in the phone application no longer lag and cause you to hit the wrong prompts, etc.
- The issue where the keyboard sometimes disappears when you are typing is still there.
- In the browser, if you tapped once in the .65 build, the bottom navigational toolbar would hide and so would the top status bar. In .75, only the bottom bar would hide but the top bar would stay. Here in .76, both hide again.
- In the browser, when you flip to landscape, the text size is increased tremendously. It scales up to fit the width of the page. Very helpful.
- There has not been one reboot so far. In .65 there were probably two a day
- There’s a weird bug where sometimes the back button doesn’t actually work. Can’t figure out what causes this to happen. Oh well.
- When navigating through the music player, playing MP3s is probably 50% better than .65 and 20% better than .75. Very, very quick.
- When navigating through photos, thumbnails appear almost instantly. Even on the Bold it sometimes took a while to load, and it loaded them one-by-one. Here they basically just pop-up after a second or two.
- Overall data connectivity feels a little slower in our non-scientific tests. Web pages take a little longer to load and we get the infamous BlackBerry clock when sending messages and Messenger nonsense.
- The camera application has way more problems than it started out with. For instance, the green autofocus rectangle no longer appears, the bottom navigational buttons flicker on and off, and it’s just all around chaos. The camera app in .75 was a little better than .65 so don’t get too worried, we’re sure this will be cleared up.
The OS version, again, is 4.7.0.76 and the platform version is 4.0.0.96. We have no idea in terms of when (or if) this version will be released, and have no additional information for you at this time. Other than the fact that your leaked OS is older than the one we’ve got. Got any questions? Let’s answer a couple of them off the bat… No, we will not send you the software. No, we have no idea what the status of this is, whether it’s being tested on Verizon, or anywhere else, and we don’t know if this will ever be released. It probably will, we just don’t want to promise anything we can’t 100% confirm. The friendly staff at BGR including myself are around to help if you’ve got any others. Just fire them off in the comments.

@ Ashley
You can download the updates from your computer, or just take it to your Verizon store and they’ll check for updates and if available they will do it for you there. The only problem with that is you’re stuck in a Verizon store waiting for about 45 minutes. It’s better to learn how to do it from home
i actually seen a page of someone saying something about os 107
BG, You sounded like a kid that is glad to have the first play station on the block yet you won’t let nobody see. “other versions left dead in their tracks”……..idiot…..Just cuz Dan Nguyen got tha new version you gotta come up with some stupid crap about you go tha new version. Very convenient as you know tha new OS will come out soon so why not just blabb out .7? Whatever. In that case, “hi my name is BoYstupid report, guess what, I found .761/2 and its freakin great. Its stops the browser from ever going to boygeniusreport.com…….you know, because we don’t want BS in our Storms cache…..
I bet there isn’t even a .76
so BGR… will there be a re-review of the storm now some of the bugs are fixed?
I think it was initially released in Japan before the US.
Can everyone please realize that this is a bunch of BS. This screenshot has been Photoshoped simply to draw people in to check out the Boy Genuis site. If BG was truly about providing info to their consumers they would do like the crackberry boys do and post a link. OS leaks are no accident, they are leaked ON PURPOSE so RIM and VZW can see what people are saying or to keep the customers happy while they continue working on the main upgrade. Sorry BG but Crackberry is where it’s at!
@ Gbaby
I’m not one to defend BG, but in this situation, he’s right if he does actually have the .76 version. He can easily be sued. If my system were to crash because of a link he provided directly from his servers, I could sue him (although in this case it would be ridiculous, though possible). Not to mention that he does not offer tech support. Crackberry provided a link to another web site, who supposedly has permission to leak the update. Although not directly responsible, they too are taking somewhat of a risk by linking to a non-manufacturer site, permission or not.
I’m sure if he was trying to grab additional traffic to his site, he’d be tossing more BS articles out there. And while I’m not one to agree with many of the opinions shared by BG and the gang, I wouldn’t accuse them of trying to generate $$$ by posting a bunch of BS either. Much of their material is confirmed and acknowledged. And while I agree that ‘leaks’ are usually done on purpose, they also usually need some sort of a ‘green light’ before they materialize.
Great news… Waiting for my 3rd unit being shipped by next week. First two had phone audio problems. Still loved it. Having had them for a couple days is worse than not having them at all…. the wait to get my lil hands on another one is almost too much to bare (bear?)!
Couldn’t have said it better!!!!!!
I received my Storm today and immediately downloaded all available updates for the Storm from blackberry.com, and there were many, but the OS version did not change from “.65.” BG probably got a beta version of .75 and then .76, as I did not even find .75 today.
This is good news, thanks. Oh sure I want it now, but I’ll want it when I get it too, and now I not only know that there’s an improvement on the horizon, but that BB is busy with fixes.
I have a .65 and didn’t know if this was a common error. When i lock the storm and the screen goes black…..i click on the lock button again and it unlocks. When i do that without clicking on the screen the accelerometer doesn’t work anymore. So every time i lock it i have to click the screen then unlock it and that way it works.
I would have to agree that the 4.7.0.76 update/leak does not exist. If it did, it would have been published already through one channel or another. Early/Unauthorized update releases are an old trick to get early feedack from “technically able” customers before officially distributing a release. The blogs are a good way of getting early QA feedback.
With that said, I look forward to the next “unathorized” release.

Honestly.. I’m not a bg fan, but he has been right about the majority of things he’s claimed in the past. I would not be surprised if he did have .76 reason being that he was like the first person to show with the storm in hand on video online. Way before any review officials finally got a chance to review it. Saying that to say that he must of had some kind of connection in order to pull that off, and is probably how pulled this one off.
I have to agree that BG indeed does have it. The early leaks/updates you people are referring to is the .75, which leaked about the same time BG announced he had .76 so it’s not like there was no leaks. He just had a newer version before the leak was dropped, thus it wouldn’t make sense to release both at the same time. The feedbacks the company would’ve wanted is what they’ll get from leaking the .75. When they’re ready they’ll leak this too but in the mean time let BG get his shine on and stop hatin’

I wish I was that lucky. I was second in line… got a Storm and it failed… took back nnext day and got another one… it too FAILED! I was so impressed with the phone that I now await another… Hope it works ok. Many thanks to BG for info. At least help is on the way. Must say I really wanted an iPhone but many friends having dropped call and reception problems due to the ATT network. So I bought a Touch. Will have the best of both worlds when my new Storm arrives.
Thanks BG for your site!!!!

BIG THANKYOU rmerck! Thanks sooo much for the video….. There are some GREAT folks on this site, Really!!!!
I ordered my Storm today, so hopefully I’ll see it in the next 2wks. I wonder if it will have the .75 firmware when it arrives since the phone is backordered and the new update is out now. Either way, I’m sure I can manage updating it myself. Looking forward to it…
I’m here in the financial district of NYC.
Can you believe that all the stores around here have the Storms on display with the OLD firmware (.65)? Does that make sense?
Wouldn’t they want customers to see the latest ‘n greatest in WORKING condition?
Sheesh !
Talking about OLD firmware (.65) I went to verizon today to check for updates and played with their 2 display Storms and one had a (.60 or.62 if I am not mistaken and saw a big difference in operation from the .65.
So their might be a few of us with the .60 or 62 version runing around.
I have .65….
wow.. i ordered my storm on Nov. 28… and i still havent received it.
i was so excited but now im kind of upset. anyone experiencing similar situations?
