Rogers launches the BlackBerry Curve 8900

Forgive us for being sparse with the details, but it appears that Rogers has just launched the BlackBerry Curve 8900. Soon Canadians will be able to exchange a cool $179.99 and 3-years of their life (with voice and data) to have the latest UMA-enabled BlackBerry. We’ve been told that those who don’t want a 3-year commitment will be able to get the 8900 for $499.99 on 2-year with voice and data and $549 month-to-month. Other than that we know jack all because there has yet to be a press release nor has there been any internal communication to management or employees. That said, we’re confident that the 8900 is launched because it’s showing in the Rogers library — aka “the internal God” — which is where all available devices are listed.
We’ll be sure to update this post as soon as we find out what exactly is going on.
UPDATE [10:12am EST]: Game on - Rogers is indeed starting to fill retail channels and the Curve 8900 is in stock at Sales Central, sitting pretty and waiting for your telesales orders.
UPDATE [8:00pm EST]: There has been a lot of confusion today. It turns out that Rogers made a bit of a mess of a soft launch. The Curve 8900 is for sure in the Rogers system as of today and was listed as ready for activation and upgrades, but it turns out that Rogers reps have been taking orders for devices that they might not have in stock. Some people were told the device will arrive in 2-5 days, so what this all boils down to is, 1) providing you get a knowledgeable CSR you should be able to order an 8900 now and have it ship when it arrives at the warehouse, and 2) stock is being shipped to warehouses for general distribution.
Thanks, SaxMan!

I saw this sitting on top of a counter at Wireless Wave/Telephone Booth aka Glentel a few weeks ago..
I remember thinking how odd, there wasn’t any promo for this or press release - and even thinking that perhaps it had already been released and I was out of the loop.
Perhaps Rogers doesn’t want to take away from either of their Bold or iPhone promos

Is this CDMA or GSM?

I know contracts in the U.S. aren’t great but it seems like Canada really gets the shaft on these contract arrangements. They almost force you into a three year agreement.
I can’t see anyone who would want to pay $500 for a two-year contract when they could get the same phone for $50 with no commitment.

Why is it the US carriers are always the last to get the newest BBs.

gquaglia,
Well BB’s “should” be here first since it’s a Canadian company … but we all know that’s not the case since BB’s get released first oversea’s … so in part … Canadian’s get the shaft when it comes to our friends on the other side of the pond!

Because RIM is Canadian my friend… and proud of it eh!

I tried getting this phone through rogers and they said I can buy it through new activation or hardware upgrade which I am not eligible for. I don’t understand why phone companies make it so hard to just outright buy a phone of their choice when they are willing to pay full price.

3 year contract? Fuck that!
I hate the fact that in the UK 18 months is becoming more the standard (and 2 year ones starting to creep in).
Does a BB actually last 3 years with the amount of use they get??

You’re a small, small man, aren’t you?

I think there’s a lot of confusion over three year terms. Yes they suck as you’re stuck with a company that might not work out for you, but you’re not OBLIGATED to have the same hardware for three years. So who cares if a BB lasts three years (the answer is usually yes, however).
On Rogers, you can upgrade your device EVERY YEAR with a subsidized cost. Do Americans actually have to have that phone for two whole years if they sign a two year contract? If so, I would die under this system, as I require an upgrade every year.

Up here in Canada, 3 year contracts aren’t as bad when you consider that we have 1 national GSM carrier so switching to another carrier usually means getting a new phone as well.
