Motorola cans RAZR 3 (Ruby), tells Android to, “Holla!”

Motorola’s plans are thwarted once again by canning the highly anticipated RAZR 3, codenamed Ruby. After putting some effort into reviving and continuing the RAZR line with this new phone, it looks like they’ve changed their minds and are shifting focus elsewhere. Though the original RAZR was wildly successful, going from overpriced down to free in just a year and a half after its release, the RAZR 2 failed to see the same results. It’s hard to say whether the RAZR 3 would have seen a come back for Motorola, but anything that can be said now is pure speculation. Jumping on Android and focusing on devices that will carry the platform, Motorola is taking another direction by being part of the Open Handset Alliance. The electronics giant is now ditching the Symbian platform that was originally intended for the new RAZR shortly after restructuring their mobile division. Will Moto be doing anything right in the near future? If they intend on staying in business, we should hope so. We’ve always got a special place for you in our hearts, Motorola.

    I realize Motorola is trying to present itself as being new, but does anyone seriously think they’re ready to kill off the RAZR? I bet in a few months we’ll see a vaguely similar looking new RAZR3 get leaked, only difference is that it will now fit into their new OS strategy.

    That was such an old photo of Ruby.

    Symbian UIQ is now canned but what can you do. Look forward to Android focus.

    @joe: Yeah, so crap that the V3 has outsold all devices to date.

    It would be interesting to see Android OS on a RAZR. Probably couldn’t be touchscreen with the current design. But the OS could definately enhance the phone.

    In my opinion the first and original RAZR kicked ass and took names. That thing was indestructible. THEN we move on to the V3xx.. ugh! Hate, hate, hated that thing. Sure, it looked cooler. but when they have to send you 4 of them in a year because of “manufacturer problems,” it gets old FAST. I don’t care what they do or how “cool” they make the new RAZR, even if I was staying with AT&T, there isn’t a chance in hell I’d buy it. They lost me long ago.

    @AndroidTapp.com

    They could’ve made the outer screen all touchscreen? Anyways its a shame to see this thing go to waste. So much potential and yet they let go of it. I blame that Sanjhay Jha guy for this.

    What about the Razr2? The Razr2 is one of the nicest looking phones on the market. In my opinion it is the best flip phone out there. While the OS is pretty much the same, there is nothing sluggish about it at all. The outside disply is nice and big and the touch controls for music, pics, and videos are also very nice.

    I worked on that phone…The phone was sexy…outer screen(QVGA) was all touchscreen, 5MP camera, VGA video capture…
    It’s sad that they scrapped it, hopefully
    they gonna release that with Android atleast…

    I had a V3 which was nice, and only started having keypad problems towards the end of my 2-yr contract. I then had a Razr2 V9m, and the keypad came apart fairly quickly. Although a beautiful looking device, I went with the Blackberry 8830. It has a horrible blue backlit keyboard, and unfortunately I have had 3 within almost a year (a year towards the end of Feb) due to trackball breakage (stopped scrolling up once, down the 2nd time). I am ready to ditch Blackberry rather than upgrading to a Storm, and would like to go back to the Razr, if a 3 ever came out. Otherwise, I will either cancel service or hope something that isn’t a massive piece of crap comes out.
