Story or no story, the Verizon BlackBerry Storm OS has issues

We gave you our theory, we gave you RIM’s official statement and now people, it’s time to move on. The bottom line is that everyone who snagged a Storm from Verizon ended up with v4.7.0.65. The indisputable caveat – v4.7.0.65 has issues. No firmware is perfect and no future firmware revision will ever be completely bug-free, but what we can tell you is that the folks at RIM and Verizon know v4.7.0.65 might be just a little sub-par. How do we know they know? Why else would they be issuing OS updates just a few weeks after releasing the handset? That’s right people, we got our hands on a preliminary internal communique detailing a series of updates coming soon to a Verizon Storm near you. The first in fact, will likely come next week – just a few short weeks after the launch. Basically, RIM and Verizon have targeted a variety of major issues and will address them through a series of OTA software updates. The list below is split up between issues that will definitely be resolved with the first update next week and issues that will be resolved in a second OTA update that will likely arrive later in December. Hit the jump for the break down and rest a bit easier knowing that whether or not the various issues with v4.7.0.65 are deal breakers for you, Verizon and RIM know there are problems are are working to fix them.
Note that the following is not a complete list of issues that will be covered in the upcoming OS updates. Instead, this is a list of issues being circulated internally at Verizon to ensure that employees do not authorize any Certified Like-new device exchanges for customers citing any of the following as their problems… The first is our favorite by far and no, the last one isn’t a joke – it’s really on there.
Issues to be resolved by the first OTA update (Maintenance Release 1) – December, week 1:
- If a customer receives a call while listening to music at low volume using a wired headset, the music volume may suddenly increase to the highest level (!). Interim recovery instructions: Lower the volume using the buttons on the side of the handset.
- When using voice-activated dialing, incoming audio may be muted. Interim recovery instructions: Enter the menu and select “Activate Handset or Speaker”.
- The handset may reset itself while sitting idle or while using multimedia applications. No interim recovery instructions provided.
Issues to be resolved by a subsequent Maintenance Release:
- Customers may intermittently lose email connectivity via CDMA and/or international roaming modes. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio off, then Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- When powering on the handset, the radio sometimes does not turn on. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- Pressing the send key while the device is in landscape mode will open the phone application in portrait mode, but the speed dial function may not work. Interim recovery instructions: Press escape until the home screen appears, then press the send key with the handset in portrait orientation.
- Sometimes entering characters on the virtual keyboard doesn’t work. Interim recovery instructions: Re-select the character.
Thanks, krazyVZW!

Oh, look at that, they pushed out a few more apps. Now there are 10,134 iPhone Apps.
I am a moron and i appoligize!
Bob the Builder = Filterman = Paul = Geewiz = Evilhomer = Bob = hellno = onoshedidnt = etc.
They are all the same person and they suffer from schizophrenia.
Seriosly. We’ve already had him removed from another blog because of the same senseless nonsense.
I have the Storm and love it! My husband also has the BB Storm and he loves it as well. Does anyone know how to remove the EN that apparently is on my husbands BB Storm on the top right hand side, we have tried everything and can’t find a solution. My BB Storm doesn’t have it. Thanks in advance for any help.
10,181 iPhone Apps!
I am a moron and I make believe I am all these people. VZW IS a union company and they hang out in Manhattan! I know as I am alos known as BlueHorseShit and we all know what color horse shit is!
Anyone having a problem with speed dial? I can press the number 3 for a certain individual and it calls number 5 and then number 4 and then it will finally, after the third time, dial the person set for number 3. Also, things seem to get worse as the battery goes down….anyone else with similar problems. Hope I didn’t get in the middle of this ongoing fight either!
Can’t speak without aliases…now you’re copying people’s shit…u’re a dick rider for real…and that’s not even joking…even throught the holidays you have no couth or sense…sad
That’s the problem with Apple people. They will defend apple products (i phone) to their death. Doesn’t matter, apple could put out dogcrap and apple lovers will says its the best.
Like-To-Spin + BlueHorseShit = Moron
Liar + Phony = Exposed Like-To-Spin
Like-To-Spin + K5Live = Bad Videos
Union + Manhattan HQ = VZW? WRONG!
BB + iPhone = NONE EVER FOR Like-To-Spin
Moron + Fanboy + dirty mouth + bad language = Like-To-Spin
No matter what I say, morons like you say I am all these people, HAHAHA
Everyone who disagrees with you is NOT one person. I guess you are a bit paranoid. Since you want to believe this, I figured I will be everyone now!
In fact I will be BlueHorseShoe and Likeabite exclusively since I think these two names are the same guy. If not who cares both are morons that can’t help themselves from attacking as they are obsessed FANBOYS!
10,181 iPhone Apps!
So I take it neither of you have had these issues with the speed dial and all?
@ ripupthehwy:
Funny I am NOT an Apple person. I own a BB Curve on VZW! Imagine, when you see an unbiased person pointing out a fact you don’t like, you immediately think they are fanboys!
The iPhone, which you seem to dislike, probably without owning one or using one beat the pants off RIM and Windows Mobile. RIM copied the iPhone as much as possible for the Storm.
The iPhone has 10,186 iPhone Apps and WiFi, so what does that make the Storm? Less featured, less popular, piece of dogcrap?
Are you really BlueHorseCrap or Like-To-Spin? HAHAHA
@ shannon b:
Sorry, you will probably get no answers here as these are just fanboys that even if they had a problem, would not admit it.
One guy on here I call Like-To-Spin wrote over 100 comments complaining about the iPhone and praising BB, then I found out he OWNED neither and it was all in his head!!!!
Forget getting any honest answer from some of them. Good luck with your new phone, hopefully the bugs will get whacked after a few updates.
Once again the inmate has taken control of the asylum. I’m amazed he’s still able to post.
Hey Paul…if you claim to have two Masters Degrees, how come your grammar is so bad? I really do think you have some ‘mental’ issues.
@ shannon b
No issues with the speed dial on my end. So far I’ve seen limited issues/errors on my end. Couple of things I’d like to see improved, which I’m sure will come in time with updates, but for now it’s an operable device with some nice little additions from my previous BB. You may want to check the ‘program’ memory. Click ‘Options’ from the menu, then ‘Status’. Seems there’s a pretty good memory leak, and running multiple programs, such as the IM’s offered, will bring down the available memory. I’ve seen 20MB go within 24 hours. Solution (for now) is to close a couple of programs if you’re running any. When memory begins to run low, issues may arise (possibly your speed dial)…in my observation. Hope that helps.
Has anyone had problems with the phone displaying the previous caller when it starts ringing with a new call?
It happens all the time to me – and I get surprised that I’m answering the phone only to find someone different than who it originally says.
It does change over to the actual caller – but not right away…
Thanks for the response! Have any of you down loaded the new OS(.75 or .76?) I’m afraid I’m going to screw more things up….I guess I will wait…let me know if you see any improvement….
Mountain Biker….haven’t had that issue, but I have had a problem with speed dial, and, just now, trying to answer a phone call. I press the button several time to answer and it would not let me answer the phone call. I just moved from a LG CC that I could not hear anything on and now with the BB Storm I can’t answer a phone call to talk with anyone…I can’t win I’ll tell you that!
Hi, Shannon b.
I’ve had that same issue. How embarrassing to keep “answering” the phone – only to have it keep ringing… Now, I have to wait for the lag to say I’m connected before I’ll say “Hello.”
Hopefully, the new OS will fix that.
Same with the lag from the time I push the speed dial number until I know it’s actually calling who I wanted it to. I sure wish they’d allow the 26 letters in landscape view to continue with the speed dial. I knew my speed dials by letter – now I need to relearn by number….
Mountain Biker,
Yes, I am hoping the new OS will fix a lot of issues…now on to the OS…I’m new at this stuff so bear with me…do I go into Verizon and get the new version or do I do it from my phone or do I load it to my computer and then to the BB? And, for these people that are trading in the Storm for a new Storm….the hardware isn’t new, just the OS right? So why do that? And one last thing….when is the date for this new OS? I am reading about .75 and a .76 OS that is now available but the number under my sticker on my BB box says .82……should I be waiting for a newer version….Once again, I apologize, I’m a newbie BB owner….
Are OS upgrades going to be available OTA (Over the Air)?
Gee, sounds like the Storm is just perfect, HAHAHA
10,186 iPhone Apps + WiFi and NO BUGS here. I have time to drink lattes at Starbucks! HAHA
Shannon b,
Quite honestly, I never received an update to an OS on my bb. I had the 8830 prior to the Storm – and that phone was pretty good. I briefly thought about switching back – but figured I’d hold on to see the updates come in.
My guess would be that the new OS would be coordinated either through the Desktop Manager OR via the Blackberry or Verizon website – quite possibly being able to download direct to the phone.
As for your software, you intrigued me when you said you had a .82. I looked at the software on my bb – and I see the PLATFORM number on mine ends with .82. However, the Version ends in the .65. You can check yours by going to “Options” and then selecting “About.” The 3rd line down will tell you the version (v4.7.0.65) and Platform.
Everyone here is discussing the version – not the Platform. I’m not really sure what the Platform is, though….
Seems the Storm is having a problem just being a phone! Maybe this IS the BB killer, HAHA
10,235 iPhone apps Now!
In just 142 days, the iPhone OS App Store has added over 10,000 apps! An amazing feat for any platform. RIM is screwed!
The biggest category of iPhone apps, according to 148Apps, is games (2,333), followed by entertainment (1,122), utilities (1,015), education (737), and productivity (517).

I’ve had my since day one of the release, and it’s one the best smart phones out there! As far as issues there are some bugs that I’m not worried about. New phones all ways have bugs. The iphone did! Don’t worry just update your software!
