Story or no story, the Verizon BlackBerry Storm OS has issues
We gave you our theory, we gave you RIM’s official statement and now people, it’s time to move on. The bottom line is that everyone who snagged a Storm from Verizon ended up with v4.7.0.65. The indisputable caveat – v4.7.0.65 has issues. No firmware is perfect and no future firmware revision will ever be completely bug-free, but what we can tell you is that the folks at RIM and Verizon know v4.7.0.65 might be just a little sub-par. How do we know they know? Why else would they be issuing OS updates just a few weeks after releasing the handset? That’s right people, we got our hands on a preliminary internal communique detailing a series of updates coming soon to a Verizon Storm near you. The first in fact, will likely come next week – just a few short weeks after the launch. Basically, RIM and Verizon have targeted a variety of major issues and will address them through a series of OTA software updates. The list below is split up between issues that will definitely be resolved with the first update next week and issues that will be resolved in a second OTA update that will likely arrive later in December. Hit the jump for the break down and rest a bit easier knowing that whether or not the various issues with v4.7.0.65 are deal breakers for you, Verizon and RIM know there are problems are are working to fix them.
Note that the following is not a complete list of issues that will be covered in the upcoming OS updates. Instead, this is a list of issues being circulated internally at Verizon to ensure that employees do not authorize any Certified Like-new device exchanges for customers citing any of the following as their problems… The first is our favorite by far and no, the last one isn’t a joke – it’s really on there.
Issues to be resolved by the first OTA update (Maintenance Release 1) – December, week 1:
- If a customer receives a call while listening to music at low volume using a wired headset, the music volume may suddenly increase to the highest level (!). Interim recovery instructions: Lower the volume using the buttons on the side of the handset.
- When using voice-activated dialing, incoming audio may be muted. Interim recovery instructions: Enter the menu and select “Activate Handset or Speaker”.
- The handset may reset itself while sitting idle or while using multimedia applications. No interim recovery instructions provided.
Issues to be resolved by a subsequent Maintenance Release:
- Customers may intermittently lose email connectivity via CDMA and/or international roaming modes. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio off, then Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- When powering on the handset, the radio sometimes does not turn on. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- Pressing the send key while the device is in landscape mode will open the phone application in portrait mode, but the speed dial function may not work. Interim recovery instructions: Press escape until the home screen appears, then press the send key with the handset in portrait orientation.
- Sometimes entering characters on the virtual keyboard doesn’t work. Interim recovery instructions: Re-select the character.

Yea some people have returned the device but how many people, just on BGR alone has said they’ve returned their iPhone. You guys are blaming all of this on RIM. You forget that it was Verizon who pushed for an early release and wanted the phone crippled. RIM wasn’t about to say no. The Bold is a rock solid device. The Curve was the #1 selling phone in October. AT&T caught a lot of heat with the Bold delays but they did it right making sure their OS was stable and the phone was only slightly neutered. So hate on Verizon, not RIM.
And I own both, a Bold and an iPhone. The iPhone may have more appeal but the Bold is a better performer. Kinda like a girl who is a 7 and a 10 in bed vs. a girl who is a 10 and just lays there.

The unit is “shorted-out” more than it “sold out” as they had a very buggy OS, they seemed to have to rollback and could not provide very many devices in the holiday quarter! Plus the reviews of the device mostly sucked and were held back until after launch. Guess why? HAHA

The real truth is that RIM lost most of the holiday quarter with a terrible rollout that was delayed and delayed. This has lost the momentum they might have had and why I said the “bubble burst!” iPhone will fry them in the holiday quarter. Take that bet? I thought not.
In the next six months the iPhone will still outsell the “iStorm” and probably all of RIM adding a few FREE software updates that add NEW features. THEN, I think Apple will introduce the NEXT generation iPhone. Take that bet and you will lose again.
RIM and the carriers by neutering the “iStorm” by not including WiFi, crippling the GPS chip and decent a development kit has killed their own chances for third party apps. “iStorm” may have been included popular handheld gaming and now it will not appeal to that entire, quite large demographic. There are already over 2,420 games for the iPhone with many multi-player over WiFi and the Internet.
The developers, who have mostly ignored the BB for years, have found a great way to make money with the iPhone. The 10,507 iPhone apps in 5 months show that the iPhone is the fastest growing mobile platform for development in history. iPhone is a much easier platform to develop for – WiFi, GPS access on the device with Objective-C and a powerful full featured SDK that includes interface builders and iPhone simulator. Easier than Java and the many multiple BB phones for sure.

I have a co-worker in Belize all this week with an iPhone exclusively, using FREE hotspots in a cafe and his hotel to make VoIP calls, email, and data. He left his laptop home! No roaming charges, no international call charges. He is using Skype and Truphone right on his iPhone! He is carrying ONE device. The average VZW phone would be a BRICK there.
Here’s my take on the Storm. I activated it yesterday after taking a day to configure everything and play around with it as much as I could without connection usability. Initially using the wizard, I had to call VZW to help me find the next option. I got stuck and I had to pull the battery. Navigation through the help files was a little tricky, I need smaller fingers, but I don’t plan on having to use the help file too much, it’s like cheating to the back of the crossword puzzle book. I am constantly in disbelief on the functionality of this phone. I absolutly love it. Yeah, portrait to landscape is a little slow, but not enough to justify taking the phone back. Please keep in mind, I’m new to the Blackberry world, so everything I’m seeling makes me wonder what took me so long to convert. I don’t believe I have any upgraded software as I received it 2 days ago, and it wasn’t due to ship until the 5th. I hope this helps, and I thank the group for giving me heads up on certain glitches, and how to work through them. Although I have’t experienced anything too major. I do have a favor to ask, is it possible to take the bickering somewhere else? My inbox is getting flooded with misc BS and it really cuts on my productivity.
So how do you expect lines when there are no Storm’s available? Your stupidity is unparalleled because if Apple had no iPhones to offer no one would be outside as it is pointless.

I for one am returning my BB Storm tonight. Received it on 11/21. Even with an infinite number of updates, the hardware is archaic at best. The rep at Best Buy told me I was his 4th RA request for the day. And everyone else was buying the iPhone. Guess what, so am I. Seven years with VZW. Sayonara. Hopefully, AT&T will use my cash to build a better network (or at least pay Apple).
