Story or no story, the Verizon BlackBerry Storm OS has issues
We gave you our theory, we gave you RIM’s official statement and now people, it’s time to move on. The bottom line is that everyone who snagged a Storm from Verizon ended up with v4.7.0.65. The indisputable caveat – v4.7.0.65 has issues. No firmware is perfect and no future firmware revision will ever be completely bug-free, but what we can tell you is that the folks at RIM and Verizon know v4.7.0.65 might be just a little sub-par. How do we know they know? Why else would they be issuing OS updates just a few weeks after releasing the handset? That’s right people, we got our hands on a preliminary internal communique detailing a series of updates coming soon to a Verizon Storm near you. The first in fact, will likely come next week – just a few short weeks after the launch. Basically, RIM and Verizon have targeted a variety of major issues and will address them through a series of OTA software updates. The list below is split up between issues that will definitely be resolved with the first update next week and issues that will be resolved in a second OTA update that will likely arrive later in December. Hit the jump for the break down and rest a bit easier knowing that whether or not the various issues with v4.7.0.65 are deal breakers for you, Verizon and RIM know there are problems are are working to fix them.
Note that the following is not a complete list of issues that will be covered in the upcoming OS updates. Instead, this is a list of issues being circulated internally at Verizon to ensure that employees do not authorize any Certified Like-new device exchanges for customers citing any of the following as their problems… The first is our favorite by far and no, the last one isn’t a joke – it’s really on there.
Issues to be resolved by the first OTA update (Maintenance Release 1) – December, week 1:
- If a customer receives a call while listening to music at low volume using a wired headset, the music volume may suddenly increase to the highest level (!). Interim recovery instructions: Lower the volume using the buttons on the side of the handset.
- When using voice-activated dialing, incoming audio may be muted. Interim recovery instructions: Enter the menu and select “Activate Handset or Speaker”.
- The handset may reset itself while sitting idle or while using multimedia applications. No interim recovery instructions provided.
Issues to be resolved by a subsequent Maintenance Release:
- Customers may intermittently lose email connectivity via CDMA and/or international roaming modes. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio off, then Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- When powering on the handset, the radio sometimes does not turn on. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery.
- Pressing the send key while the device is in landscape mode will open the phone application in portrait mode, but the speed dial function may not work. Interim recovery instructions: Press escape until the home screen appears, then press the send key with the handset in portrait orientation.
- Sometimes entering characters on the virtual keyboard doesn’t work. Interim recovery instructions: Re-select the character.

Ok, I signed onto this blog so I can see what others are experiencing with their phones. I got mine yesterday and the set up wizard was a little quirky, but then again, I didn’t follow the instructions to make sure my battery had a good charge. So I pouted and went to bed without playing with my toy. Today, full charge and I haven’t really noticed any problems, but then again, I’m not a BB user to begin with, and I haven’t activated my phone until I decide to keep it. I’m graduating from a LG Voyager, which is a great phone. So far installing the software, and synchronizing went seamless. I’m not noticing any lag in switching from software or from portrait to landscape. Then again, I haven’t loaded any extra software on it at this time.
I enjoy this group so I know what to look for and how others resolve their misc problems, however, I find those that bash others because of their opinions a complete waste of my time, and I’m sure others will agree as well. If we can keep this as a friendly users group, and share usability issues, that would be great, otherwise I guess I will just have to look for another group. I can’t believe some of us claim to be adults.
Oh, yeah. The popsicle now has 10,382 iPhone apps. Your POPPED-sicle has none I think!

I could not agree more, but it is hard to do that here when anyone who reports a problem or sometimes even just agrees with a post on BGR is attacked with foul names and personal attacks by FANBOYS, that turn out to NOT even have owned the device they are bashing!
There is not exchange of ideas with these same few bad apples that hang out on here day and night, day after day, attacking anyone who point out a problem on their favorite toy! I got disgusted and fought back!

He’s already been banned on one site. His real name is Marcus, runs a site that’s anti-Verizon…and the best part…he works for them! He runs off of different handles, but BG can track it based on the IP address and the handle used. Hopefully BG will implement the new comment system sooner rather than later. It’s difficult to read posts when you’ve got someone listing how many apps the iPhone has every 10 minutes. I’ve got an iPhone and could care less!

Thanks Paul, but with all that said, I like what I see so far in the Storm. No reason to go and and tear down VZW’s door. I’m sure with what ever bugs were released with the first version software will be resolved with new versions. I guess I forgot to mention that I am a software developer and know that no application is perfect, and know that RIM’s developers are reading these blogs and taking into consideration what we like and dislike, and any bugs that we report in a constructive manner.

Alright you say you’re defending yourself. When the Storm no Wifi thread was ended by me, (because I had reached my goal of making it the longest thread on BGR) you continued to post, having a conversation with yourself. I posted on here and you responded. I posted about the OMNIA blog and you responded. I posted about the Storm’s update and you responded. So how are you defending yourself when you’re chasing me all over BGR with iPhone app store number posts??

The iPhone was fixed even adding new features. Even if and when the Storm gets fixed it will still suck without WiFi, apps, GPS chip use, and no voice and data at the same time.
Who won in the only place that counts the marketplace? The iPhone kicked RIM and all their phones ass in just 15 months with VZW losing over one million customers. The iPhone will probably outsell both the Storm and the Bold together.

10,388 iPhone apps to basically none for Storm. How will this help the Storm in the marketplace? App Store was launched on July 11, 2008 with 500 apps. RIM’s entire platform has about 700 apps total in about 7 years! OK, do the FANBOY SPIN now and tell us how this does not matter? BG can confirm that the three of us are not the same, or should I say that at least I am neither of the two, simply by IP address. I’m pretty consistent with the two or three addresses that I use. In your case, I’d love to have access to reveal what we all basically suspect. I’ve already seen it on one site, would love to prove my suspicion here as well.
As for VZW and unions, etc. that you keep claiming that I never answered…’VERZION’ ‘was’ headquartered in NYC. You only read what you want. And I have not been in NY for a little over 3 years now, so if they moved, then yippee. But I do know why YOU know so much about them…that’s because you ‘work’ for them…Marcus…and run a anti-Verizon web site. When I spoke about the unions, I was referring to Verizon and how they used to block up 6th Ave. and spill across the street into Bryant Park.
