I have the omnia but i do not have service thru verizon it’s thru a company called page plus for 40$ a month. My problem is I can’t get any web access or picture mail. I don’t think verizon offer a daa plan if i don’t have service with them? What can I do?

Due to the fact that it has wifi, I would not need the data plan. Anyone know if I could cancel the data plan after the first month and still have an operational phone?

I visit a number of countries throughout the year…almost none of which have CDMA networks (Korea is about it). However, just about every hotel now has wireless Internet. Think: Skype and chat!

A hell of a lot cheaper than paying the hidden roaming fees for a worldwide cell phone.

For those of you asking about the data plan.

I switched from AT&T (It’s network is garbage, dropped calls, no service etc) to Verizon and got this phone. However, I didn’t get it from a Verizon Wireless store, there are other 3rd party stores that are authorized to deal Verizon wireless that won’t force you to get the data plan (You have to pay a little extra, not anything compared to $30/month for 2 years though)

And if you do visit a Verizon Wireless store, you may be able to bargain your way out of the data plan

One question….. WHAT GOOD IS WI FI WHEN YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE THE DAYA PLAN??? I NOT KNOW A LOT ABOUT PDA’S BUT I HAVE THIS PHONE AND IT IS THE BEST PHONE ON THE MARKET BY FAR!! BUT SINCE I AM REQUIRED TO HAVE THE DATA PLAN ON THE PHONE WHICH GIVES ME 24/7 INTERNET WITH NO RESTRICTIONS, WHEN AND WHY WOULD I NEED THE WIFI CAPABILITIES?

Here’s the drawbacks as I see it:

-Ordering from the website requires you to get a data plan (min $29.99 a month) I have not checked with the store to see if there is anyway around it. For me, it is just a matter of affordability. I don’t have another $30 a month. But the wifi is cool because it is getting easier and easier to find a hotspot.

–Built in GPS REQUIRES VZ Navigator at an additonal $9.99 a Month! This is on top of any data plan you may choose to purchase! I’ve been on a couple of hard-core-user sites and some folks are looking for a crack to free up the GPS feature for use without the monthly fee (using google maps, eg).

It seems that Verizon want not only to put a phone in our pocket but their hands as well. This is good for their bottom line, but not The Right Thing.

I just talked to a rep and he said that a data plan is not required for omnia. He said only for PDAs and Blackberrys (omnia is considered a smart phone). He may have been wrong, but before writing this option off, I would call and ask. I disagree though on not needing the data plan – at home when I have the wifi network I will use my PC, when I would want to use the omnia I wouldn’t have a wifi network.

From what I read the GPS will work with google maps and not only verizon’s subscription software.

Does anyone know how well this phone would do at syncing with Google Calendar?

So I am not such a geek. But I travel to the UK a lot recently. I am currently getting a Vodaphone rental through VZWS every time I make the trip. So I have one question – will I be able to land at London Heathrow and start using the Omnia? Will someone please decode this:
CDMA 800/1900 with 1xRTT/1xEV-DO rev.0/1xEV-DO rev.A
and tell me what it means in regard to my question? Thanks!

ordered mine by phone this morning, $199 after new contract and my work discount. sales rep said to expect it to be delivered Friday. a far more loaded phone for the same price as the storm, and with wifi! Hopefully it lives up to the specs.

Its funny that Winmo phones like this don’t seem to be held to as high a standard as RIM devices. Storm comparisons are all to the iPhone. Gizmodo reviews this phone and compares it to the buggy Storm and still recommend the Storm. They don’t even bother to bring up the iPhone. (presumably because this is a Verizon phone and iPhone is ATT…but the same could be said for the Storm…no?)

I could not type on the Storm when it was in the upright mode. Very hard to get the letter you want to pop up.

Internet seemed slow, also. Basically, the Storm was very hard to figure out how to use. Not intuitive at all.

i dont know why every one is talking crap about the storm. i had mines sins friday and i have no problem wit it at all. its working perfctly to me.i know a few more people that have and they are happy wit it. and blackberry will realse new soeftware for it and kool stuff.after all they wer pushed by vzw to realse it be for december so i dont blam tham. peple will all ways have something to say about any phone no mater what.

Does this mean that I won’t be able to use GPS with any other navigation system, like Google Maps, Tom-Tom, etc.

One potential issue I see is the interaction between the 8gb onboard storage and the microsd card. In Windows Media Player will it show you on one screen all of your media or will you have to jump back and forth between lists of what’s onboard and lists of what’s on the sd card? On my Tilt I don’t see a way for it to display both the media on your phone and on the card at the same time.

If it’s not a seamless integration I vote fail.

If you go to att there is no required data plan. You will however forfeit your rebate if you get a fuze/BB/Incite and no data plan. but like you said, with Wi-Fi, who needs it.

Data plan is mandatory. The cheapest plan you can get for this phone is $69.98/month. Since last week, Verizon has made data plans mandatory for all smartphones (on new contracts at least)

Sort of a related question. Is there anyway to get this phone without the data plan? I am not spending $30/month for a data plan I will use a couple times a year when traveling. I estimate that 95% of the time WiFi will be available to the phone, so the data plan is of no value to me. If they had a lower end data plan for occasional usage, for like $5 or $10 a month, then I would jump on it. But forcing this extra $30/month for a data plan I do not want or need is a no sell for me. Who else is selling the Omnia? Do they force a data plan too?
