2nd generation iPod Touch is the fastest touch device yet from Apple
This one took us a bit by surprise. Believe it or not, the 2nd generation iPod Touch got quite a boost in umph – yes, that’s the technical term – and Apple didn’t even bother telling us about it. While the 1st generation iPod Touch and both iPhone models feature processors running at a respectable 412 MHz, the newer iPod Touch model received a substantial boost to 532 MHz. Why would Apple keep quiet about what amounts to nearly a 30% increase in processor speed? We’re really not sure. Maybe Stevie didn’t want to detract from Apple’s current star infielder and get potential and buyers wondering why the iPhone 3G didn’t get the same steroid cocktail. Whatever the case may be, iPhone 3G owners wondering why a game seems so much smoother on their buddy’s iPod Touch – well, it is.

So the iPod Touch (or iTouch as colloquially but annoying said) got a processor boost, but not the iPhone 3G?
Can anyone say IDIOTIC??
Second!
If have and love the 2G iPod Touch. If it had a phone and worked on T-Mobile, my search for the perfect smartphone would be over. I am a frustrated smartphone owner, wanting to upgrade from a Pearl 8120 but tormented over the fact that none of the current offerings fit my requirements. The iPhone is probably the best all round but AT&T sucks on plan pricing and signal (Where I work and live). The G1 is too clunky and not fully enough developed. And the Storm is still not quite ready for primetime.
then screw all those horrible phones and get an N95 8gb or E71. Best there are… And proof that a touchscreen isn’t necessary, and buttons allow you to do a whole lot more alot faster.
I bet battery life has something to do with it.
i agree usually – battery life has to be the reason for the 3G to not have the same processor speed.
chris – the n95 is old although i like the e71, however buttons do not make it faster. OS is going to determine the speed of the interface, not the touch / buttons.
“quite a boost in umph – yes, that’s the technical term”
Actually, the technical term is “oomph.”
Wow, so much information it’s unbelievable. The ipod touch and 3g iphone have the same exact processor with a maximum speed of 667 mhz and a operational frequency of 533mhz. The same screen, GPU same everything.
This can be easily verified.

The original iphone and ipod touch used the S3C6400.
Why so misinformation. There you go. No secret. The game developer in the article said the load times were the new ipod touch the quickest, followed by the 3g iphone.
The article just speculated that the iphone was running at 412mhz. That 412mhz is from a firmware update from the original iphone. How is that relevant to the 3g iphone? That article is a bunch of crap and so is BGR for not knowing better.
@mike – the iphone runs at 412mhz. that’s been widely reported.
if everything’s exactly the same, then i guess the developer was wrong that his came can push more polygons on a 2nd gen touch than the other devices?
Wait…what? I was under the impression that the Samsung-branded ARM11 core in the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPhone 3G ran at a respectable 600-700MHz?? Wasn’t that in the initial specs?
@Greg
I too am waiting on a phone to replace my 8120 which will be the 8900 (javalin). It will be a sick phone.
@ Dtest54,
You’re right. The N95 8gb is older than the iPhone 3G and E71. But are they better? I think not, but that’s just my opinion. Its still the most powerful device ever made by Nokia based on benchmarks. I don’t get why these simpler phones get more pub, yet less sales or features.
The OS alone can’t determine the speed of the UI. One of Apple’s big mistake is not realizing the engine is nothing without a good steering wheel and pedal set. The physical controls have alot to do with UI speed.
The iPhone has limited features, and a simple focus. Give it the features of the N95 8gb and then talk speed. I regularly challenge any iPhone user I come across to a speed test on text entry, productivity, and launching apps. I’ll never truly lose, since whatever the iPhone supposedly does so fast, I can do nearly as fast if not faster, while also doing other stuff, so which is the fastest? I haven’t been beat yet.
The iPhone has one button and a smooth screen. Had it had 3 buttons and a QWERTY or T9 keypad like many power users demanded since day one, it’d be quicker. Just a fact. Tactile feedback improves speed and trains the muscles easier, and its addition to touchscreen devices is always meant to increase speed.
I will tell you why, this is, ole Stevie has a year and a half left with Mr. High price. Apple knows it made a mistake, by doing exclusive deals then renewing it. Now look at the comp, it’s getting steeper. Not everyone in this country is At&t. So why would they give a boost to the a product that is pushed to a small percent, then to another that is available to the whole world. If you ask me I think its a slap in the face to the exclusive company and iphone owners. I have both so I still benefit, thankfully.
