Oh, and about WiFi on Verizon’s Samsung Omnia…

Sure it’s always a mystery how a handset might turn out after making its way through the carrier branding process, or “the crippler” as we call it. Will it be crippled beyond repair? Will it still be usable and only undergo minor feature changes? As far as the Samsung Omnia is concerned, the biggest question was with regards to whether or not Verizon would disable WiFi. Well you know what they say – a picture is worth 1,000 words. Big Red was indeed kind to the Omnia as it passed though the branding process and as you can see above, WiFi will be ready and waiting for all you touchscreen Windows Mobile fans for whom EVDO just isn’t enough. So there you have it folks; we showed you the pics, we gave you pricing and a release time line and now you know WiFi is still sitting pretty. All that’s left is for you to call in and place your orders or head out early next month to get your hands on a sure winner from what is now the nation’s largest carrier.
Thanks, krazyVZW!

Despite BG saying I’m stupid if I don’t care about wifi on a PHONE, guess what, I don’t. So call me stupid BG, but my smartphone is for mobility access, and EVDO gives me much wider cover than wifi OR gsm 3g.
As for this phone, looks more to me like Samsung has the balls to stand up to V and say no than other manufacturers (hint: RIM) who cave.
And yeah VZW, stop neutering the GPS in our phones!
I’m still skeptical .. thats not the traditionl Red Verizon Branded Box I have been given for almost every phone I have purchased from Verizon in the past 8 years.
What exactly does Wi-Fi “Access” mean anyway.
The story about VZW removing wifi from the Storm because “wifi is teh debil” is a total hoax. End of story. IF it was “removed”, you better believe there was a damn good (i.e. technical) reason and that’s why it isn’t available for ANY carrier.
i think most vzw handsets started shipping in white boxes a few months back
I’m guessing it is a play on word. I read the manual (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDownDetail.do?group=&type=&subtype=&model_nm=SCH-I910&language=&cate_type=all&mType=UM&dType=D&vType=L&cttID=2062932&prd_ia_cd=&disp_nm=SCH-I910) and the WiFi capability is definitely present on that phone. You can access it the same way you would on a PC. This phone is looking more and more like the one for me. I can’t wait for wed morning to order it online (that is if BGR sources are right)
Just got mine today.
Wifi is the same as the i760. There is no limitation.
Jeff,
Where did u get ur omnia?
telesales on sunday arrived today
I’ve never been concerned about WiFi on my phone either. I went out of town on business and the internet on my Treo 700P was actually faster than the Wifi on my laptop at the hotel where I stayed.
I’m really hoping the GPS is unlocked on the Omnia. I probably won’t use it, but I’d like to have a phone that can make use of all of its features. The GPS is unlocked on the Storm, so I’m hopeful that it is on the Omnia as well.
My is schedule to show up tomorrow by 15:00.
xv6800(HTC TITAN/Sprint Mogul) has full html browser, its been out for quite some time
just received the Omnia yesterday and so far everything is cool, except that the wifi is not working. It doesn’t turn on when you click to turn it on (following the manual) I’m wondering if verizon shut it down? Because I contacted verizon tech support and they did say it should be available and ran through their simulator to active the wifi … I followed the directions but it doesn’t turn on and then she says this is first model of this kind she has dealt with and probably needs to get someone who is more familiar with it and place me on hold — which eventually place my call back in the holding queue.
Doesn anyone who has the phone got the wifi working?
sp33d,
I get mine today, I’ll post later and let you know. I know they didn’t disable the wifi on this phone, but sometimes these kinds of kinks just need to be worked out on release. We’ll see, though!
belltiara,
FYI…
I just got off the phone with Samsumg Tech support and after waiting almost an hour to their level 3 support … the guy suggested do a hard reset on the phone and reactivate it… and to my amazement it worked!!!
Just got my Omnia today and the GPS is in fact, locked. You have to use VZ Navigator to make use of the GPS radio.
Yah WiFi definitely works fine on it. This phone is pure amazing. I’m so impressed and just ecstatic on how much it continues to impress myself and those around me. I even got a hardcore iPhone owner saying he wants one haha…
B.S. – They crippled the Treo 700WX, and were not apologetic about it. An inside source revealed that leaving it would have made it “too easy” to use the data plan on a laptop w/o paying the $5.
Why do you guys care if it has wifi or not when verizon makes you pay for internet anyway?
Everyone is getting excited about WiFi which is great but through Verizon you have to pay an extra $30 a month, $360 a year, to get their internet connect as well with the Omnia.
Verizon shot itself in the foot.
The big draw of a WiFi is that you would not have to pay extra like with iPhone and Storm.
Why even have WiFi is you have pay $360, year after year after year, for something that is free with WiFi???
Very disappointed,
John
Regarding Verizon smart phones:
Does anyone know which phone is better now that they have a chance to use the storm and omina? I don’t like either one and the screens are hard to create text. I have an old u740 and the keybroad is easier than these new phones. It looks like we are going backwads on just having an easy to use keyboard, webacess and email.
I hear LG is coming out in a few months and the HTC touch pro is coming out soon. The reports I’ve heard on the HTC touch is that it is slow becuase one OS is on top of another OS, HTC’s and Verizon’s.
Greetings,
It’s cool that they have the Wifi (and it’s wifi capable instead of just wifi because they are not guaranteeing you’re in a hotspot). I haven’t been able to find this information on my various searching. How do you find the MAC address on my i910 omnia? My home wifi network is setup with MAC address filtering and WPA2+PSK encryption but I’m new to smart phones. Any ideas or helpful links that I missed in my searches? THANKS
Effective 11/18/2008 when you get any PDA/Smartphone/Blackberry through Verizon you will be required to get the $29.99/month data plan. They no longer offer data plans as pay by the MB for smartphones, only for regular phones using MobileWeb. This applies to the Omnia, Storm or any other Blackberry. Yes, the Omnia is WiFi capable, but as another poster stated, why would you care when you are required to carry the $30 data plan in order to have the smartphone on Verizon’s network anyway? Except of course, where WiFi is faster.
Did anyone answer you? I have the same question and Verizon does not know how to answer me…
Who’s question are you referring to? If it’s about OP topic, yes the Verizon’s Omnia has WiFi capabilities. It works great on the network and if you come across a spot where you absolutely need WiFi, it works just as fine there too.
If you’re talking about Aaron’s questions about MAC filtering, you can find the MAC address under Settings > Version
so ( samsung omnia )
is 10/01/2009 and i still wonder?
is the wi-fi working or not?I do not mind to do upgrades or flashes if well documented.
and how about the GPS?
do i have chance to save some money to use this device as packet PC on my home WI-FI and implement SSH to connect to some servers and possibly to use Firefox and to play some media?
So do not give me the corporate crap of margins and locks and tell me what is this phone really good for!
We all know that corporate crap and locks is what keeps the $$$$$$$$$$$$ coming and going.
i want:
make a phone call using verizon.
This is where verizon ends coze where i live there is no signal.
then go to my home ISP> wi-fi and:
use skype
use ssh
use firefox
use camera
use camcorder
use google
use some document editing
and i’l be happy for the $30 i have to spent to get it
any differences 900-910? and how to identify?
and if all goes well install Linux on it all together.
