Nokia E71 coming to AT&T as E71x; live and in the flesh

There it is people, looking sexy as ever – we can only hope that the “X” doesn’t stand for “Xtra crippled”. It looks like we’re now pretty close to seeing AT&T formally announce the E71, rebranded as the E71x, as a welcome addition to its smartphone line. The 6650 made it through the AT&T branding process relatively unscathed so we’re hoping the E71 can do the same. In terms of pricing, we’re hearing it should be in the neighborhood of $150 with a 2-year contract but that’s unconfirmed for the time being. So, S60 fans, start your drooling. Hit the jump for two more shots including a close up of the various AT&T apps you can expect.

[Thanks, Todd!]

I used this device for quite a while.
Just like bgr I had network issues.
Returned it and got a bold, but the phone is lovable. I am going to get it again. But, the unlocked version. I am sure NES will help us debrand this thing atleast I hope so. Let’s see now I should just wait till it comes out.

@ “thisguy” – if that really is your name.

You’re high. E71 is a great phone. Sleek and sexy and all, but it’s not better than the bold. No way.

    1. Screen. Bold.
    2. Keyboard. Bold.
    3. 3.5. Bold.
    4. Email. Bold.
    5. Design. Matter of taste. E71 is awesome; so is bold.
    6. Size. E71. I guess. But the Bold, being bigger, feels serious. And it’s not too big.

BG did a head to head comparison. Remember? Bold won.

Bottom line? E71 is a great device. But for the BlackBerry world I could very happily own one. But except for size and design, no way it’s better than the Bold. And imho, it’s debateble if it beats Bold those two criteria.

    Right Zach? BG?

Glad to see another Nokia on AT&T. NOT happy to see all the garbage in the main menu. They couldn’t leave well enough alone, could they… AT&T can release an iPhone with no trash in it, but no, they can’t release a Nokia untouched. Maybe I’m being too harsh, maybe it’s just that AT&T theme, or maybe its the fact that the entire main menu is different than what it originally was that annoys me right now. Alright, so I can change the theme, but that still doesn’t change the fact that it looks like another N75 with hopefully a more stable OS. My guess is that the sales package has been ripped apart too. I hope this phone can be debranded if it comes out, and I hope AT&T doesn’t rip apart the sales package. Otherwise, I’ll gladly drop $400 for an unlocked/unbranded one.

@ Conrad (I hope thats not really your name, probably got made fun of alot growing up huh?)

I never said the E71 was better than the Bold….I said its the best QWERTY phone! But if you want to make comparisons….

    1. Price: on 2yr contract E71=$150 Bold=$369
    2. Screen color: E71=16 million colors, Bold=65 thousand colors
    3. Battery Life on edge connection: E71=10.5 hours, Bold=5 hours
    4. Camera: E71= 3.2 megapixel, Bold 2.0 megapixels
    5. Build quality: E71= quality metal casing, Bold= fake leather backing and plastic, plastic, plastic!!!

And as much as I love BGR, they are obviously bias towards RIM. And if youre making decisions on phones based on BGR…you are the schmuck that I think you are.

Bottom Line: E71 is the best QWERTY phone out there, and RIM is gonna lose marketshare not only to Apple but Nokia as well.

BTW, have fun cleaning the dust off that trackball every 2 months.

Also the Bold is huge….lets not try to play down the size of the Bold. I would not carry that thing with me if I was going out on the town or to a club. The E71 is a great business phone, at the same time sleek and sexy enough to use after hours.

What is the problem with the menu? You can change the theme, delete software or simply move unwanted shortcuts to a trash folder (that you add youirself. In S60 you can move most shortcuts and folders as you like, so you decide. If you add Smart Settings from Mobifun (a must!), then you will have an ultra convenient smart phone beauty. Don`t forget, that there is plenty of good GPS software, that works like a charm with aGPS. So the E71 is the most complete Smartphone for people, who need email power, a great phone (sorry WN fans) plus a wide choice of 3rd party software (which is still the reason I don`t use blackberries).

Love my E71! Good screen, decent camera inc video, great battery life, good keyboard and lovely build quality. my friend is still prodding away at his first email on his Jobsphone and I’ve sent 3! I’ve got mail for exchange and personal email enabled (took me 1 minute) and overall its a pretty smart smart phone. Good work Nokia.

    @ conrad

Your list is mostly accurate, minus one big thing. The Bold is $150 more. Also, the D-pad blows away the trackball, and the shortcut keys up top are great.

    1. Screen. Bold.
    2. Keyboard. Bold.
    3. 3.5. Bold.
    4. Email. Bold.

So far I’ve liked my e71-2. I had previous had a few other s60 phones prior to this and my biggest complaint was the speed of the OS, but overall quite enjoyed the phones.

While I gave up S60 for awhile I moved to iPhone, that lasted a weekend as it is a big pile of shit, so I moved on to an Blackberry 8800, then a 8310. Great phones. The blackberry is a fantastic email device. However my enterprise stopped supporting email though BIS so I was forced to look for a new solution that offered ActiveSync.

So I picked up the e71 from Amazon because I can’t stand the WinMo devices and my previous experiences have been mostly happy.

As an overall phone I like it more than my previous blackberries. I’m glad to be done with the little track ball that got dirty too fast, and that plastic crap all over my blackberries always felt, and was, cheap.

It wouldn’t be fair to not acknowledge the fact that Nokia’s messaging clients are nowhere near that of RIM’s. Nokia’s email and texting system is way dated and quite piecemeal. It’s useable, and fast, but the interface and controls could use a major re-working. Hell, just straight up copy RIM. That’s what all these guys do now adays anyway.

@ Graygory: Nope, its an E71. The E63 is thicker and plastic. This one’s steel.

@Kevin: I’ve used it since the first week it came out. No drop call issues.

@Conrad: Keep dreaming. RIM can only dream of the sleekness that Nokia delivers so effortlessly.

@This Guy: You’re right with everything. Although, to be fair, I have to mention the Bold is 480×360 and the E71 is 320×240. Big difference, I would soooo want a better res on my E71, but yes the screen’s much more brilliant with the 16M colors. So, its a toss up in the screen category.

And yes, BB cannot come up with the look and feel of the E71 ever, because I think they don’t want to go that way, not because they’re not capable of.

Finally, as good as the E71 is (the best out there, not just because I have it:D), but forget the market-share. iPhone keeps on gaining, BB is holding up nice and looks to be improving with the 8900 and Storm and what not. Nokia has been constantly losing marketshare at a wild pace, esp. in the E and N series. Meh, I don’t mind being amongst the handful of smart smartphone users left XD

    Bunbury says:

Maybe somebody can answer this for a BB user, what kind of flexibility does Activesync provide when working with Exchange. Currently, I have my BB set up so that I do not get e-mail when it is connected to my PC. If I delete e-mail on my BB, there is no impact on my Exchange inbox. Can I do that with WinMo? On the other hand, would WinMo allow my to truly sync and mirror both inboxes. I have tens of thousands of e-mails stored in folders in my mailbox. Could I move them using WinMo and have the same effect as when I use webmail for exchange? It’s an intriguing option I have not considered.

Lastly, does anyone know how the other Exchange sync apps handle this, say for the iPhone or Nokia’s email for exchange?

I have a bold and I am actually returning it. It is an awesome phone (I won’t reiterate what has already been said), but it is really geared toward business users, not for the average consumer. I bought the bold for the querty keyboard and internet browsing. Although typing on the bold is a dream, the browser needs serious work. The bold was not built for browsing and neither is any blackberry. Read the reviews on the e71 and it is clear that it has a great browser. That’s why I am returning the bold and getting the e71. I won’t wait for the att version, you can find an unlocked one for $370 now.

@leo23: The other day The kid posted a Black E-series xx branded phone they called it the E63. I was just mentioning that this phone looks almost identical. So I wonder if it is mix of the two. Like a e71 with a 2meg camera or something like that. I just think it will be crippled that is all or just dumed down.

    leo23 says:

@Graygory: Hmm..yea could be a little bit of E63ness. But, it just seems far-fetched IMO, because they have the E71-1 (which I have, so maybe the call drop issue is with the NAM, or then Rogers is nice to my phone!), then the E71-2NAM, then the E63, probably an E63 NAM, so E71x would be a big production cost if they were to hybridize the E71 and the E63. The E71ness is clear with the keyboard and the steel (which is darker gray). So maybe only the secondary cam is gone (and I’m hoping the Wifi too XD) and you’ve the E71x. No need to E63ise it, so I guess no 3.5″ jack after all.

But again, they could go with the 2MP cam. Well, I don’t think so, but the dumber the x-version gets, the happier I’ll be. XD

And you’re right! I wouldn’t bet on it breaking any new ground in the US market despite being the Wired smartphone of the year. The US market has never been intelligible through simple logic.

Seems to me that an unlocked E71 will initialy set you back around $400 and you can subscribe to the $15/month MediaNet plan for 2 years for a grand total of $360. that’s a total outlay of $760.

ATT’s (crippled?) version of the E71 will set you back $150 initially and I’m pretty certain you’ll be forced to pay $30/month for their “smartphone” data plan and more if you want to “tether”. That’s a grand total of $870 for the same two years.

    ATT…”Do less for more.”

Does anyone when this is supposed to come out? I bought the bold and had the pleasure of using this phone for a couple of days and i must say i am surprised. The keyboard takes a bit of getting used too, but thats not a problem. I dont use the resolution of the bold anywhere near its full potential so that is pointless. Plus the battery life far exceeds the bold as well as the amount of 3rd party apps. I have been a die hard blackberry fan in the past few years and I can totally see why Symbian is the biggest operating system for mobile phones in the world currently. Not to mention the form factor of the e71 surpasses the bold even though the bold does look slightly better in my opinion.
