Nokia E71 coming to AT&T as E71x; live and in the flesh

There it is people, looking sexy as ever – we can only hope that the “X” doesn’t stand for “Xtra crippled”. It looks like we’re now pretty close to seeing AT&T formally announce the E71, rebranded as the E71x, as a welcome addition to its smartphone line. The 6650 made it through the AT&T branding process relatively unscathed so we’re hoping the E71 can do the same. In terms of pricing, we’re hearing it should be in the neighborhood of $150 with a 2-year contract but that’s unconfirmed for the time being. So, S60 fans, start your drooling. Hit the jump for two more shots including a close up of the various AT&T apps you can expect.

[Thanks, Todd!]

    Nooooo!!
    this is horrible news.
i already have a e71-2 and i don’t want every teen bopper trend follower (iphone users) to pick one up.
plus if they raise my data rate from 15 to 30 or somehow cripple my ability to tether; they’ll all die.

I used the unlocked device for about 3 weeks and it was really a great device. The build quality is amazing but if you have large hands, not HAMS mind you, but just fairly large hands you might find the keyboard a bit cramped. Also, moving around from 3G to Wifi isn’t as smooth as it is on other devices. It’s always prompting for a connection selection. You can set a permanent choice, but then you can’t automatically take advantage of wifi when it’s available. There may be tricks to fixing this but I never figured them out. They will probably nix the front facing camera of the E71-2 but then you don’t really need it in the states.

Otherwise, this is a great device and am excited that AT&T is adding it to the line up. However, if I were keeping this as my daily driver, I’d buy the unlocked version to keep everything in tact and have the freedom to use any carriers SIM. However, if you don’t mind a contract, $150 is a great price.

Unbranding Nokia Symbian hardware is typically a multi-part operation that includes getting an unlock code from the carrier, having vanilla firmware available, and Nemesis Service Suite software. See what it takes for the AT&T N75:

To solve the access point issue, Nokia made available software called “Birdstep Smart Connect” via the “Download!” menu option. You can setup access point groups, so you can have all access points (WiFi and 3G) living beneath one access point, and they can be in priority order. Then, you can mindlessly always select that one, and it will go through your connection points until it finds an available one.

@Vijay: Sweet! I didn’t see that when I had it. Thanks for pointing that out and I wish I’d caught that when I had it.

    r u f*cking kidding me!!?

first there were rumors that the SE W760 was gunna come to t-mobile and maybe later at&t, but at&t got it and t-mobile got forgotten.

then there were rumors that t-mo was gunna get the Nokia 6650 but at&t got it instead!

and now this! T-Mobile was supposed to get this!

anyways, it looks ugly. the original looks a lot nicer.

From the pictures, it looks like they took out the front facing camera from the original E71. I hope they offer a white version, too.

    Sure … install Hack software.
Then you can uninstall anything in the AppManager. Unless its part of the ROM then you’ll need to update it. Currently non is available yet; unless last weeks update IS for this E71-2 (NAM version).

AT&T has an incredible line-up already. With the addition of the E71x it’ll be even more stellar. I’m also thinking it will give hope for Nokia’s other great S60 devices.

The E62 wasn’t crippled. It just didn’t have jack on it. No 3G, it didn’t have a WiFi radio at all, no camera. Hardly anthing back then had WiFi. Back on topic though…..sweet deal but I’d still prefer to buy this phone unbranded. Still waiting on that ATT branded firmware update for the E62.

Forget tethering the unlocked e71 can use JoikuSpot and use your 3G to become a WiFi hotspot! Can the Bold do that?

I’m not sure, but it looks like it doesn’t have the front camera for video calls on the top right side.

I am using an E71, and it has a tiny camera on the right side. I can see the light sensor on the left side, but I couldn’t find the camera on the right side…

Yea I called it. I knew this would happen since you anoucnced rogers was getting it the other day. Yes so now you all will be getting this phone to play with so you can have a contest for the E71-2 you are keeping for yourself. Because the black verson of the E71-2 is still my favorite. Or you could always just give one to me I. It will be like a big brother letting me use his tie, or have it in this case.

BGR-let’s see the back of the device!!!!! stop being a prick

You’re right. No secondary cam. That’s typical. I hope Rogers removes it too, and really cripples it (kill the WiFi…muahahaha) so I can still flash this baby like I do now at all the BB-users. The Bold is nice and all, but this thing is slim beyond RIM’s wildest dreams. And its S60. Oh, and the Nokia CEO uses it=) Best phone by Nokia right now, IMO, along with the N82.

I have been thinking is this the E63 with a different keyboard the the other day the kid posted pics of a phone the same color the only thing different was the keyboard and dependending on when the points are on it couldn’t the keyboard be changed with little effort. It even had a an x in its code name I think it was Exx. I saw the back of the E63 online and it had what looked to be a finger print scanner on the back of it. I don’t think it was infared because of its position.

AT&T is going to ruin this with their crap rom. like every other at&t rom it drains batteries, has useless apps and just about anything you can think of to make it worse then the OEM version.

but I agree with what was said above…i’ve had this phone for 3 months. Just got rid of it…it was fun, but for business there is nothing like a crackberry and the bold has hit the spot :D
