IcePhone: an upcoming triple-flip with Windows Mobile

The concept is interesting to say the least; a triple-flip 3G smartphone with a touchscreen, full QWERTY keypad and third function panel that can flip to face downward beneath the keypad and double as a gaming controller. Whether or not we’ll ever see it in production however, remains to be seen. A company by the name of The Medical Phone Ltd have begun showing off this unique contraption and claim that it is currently in production, though there was no working demo shown off at a recent expo it attended. As the company’s name might suggest, the handset began as a concept for a survival-based device that would pack a full first-aid guide and various other functionality. Of course this niche marketing would drastically limit the device so it has been fanned out a bit though it still has some interesting emergeny features such as a one-touch emergency button that phones 911, the closest hospital and your doctor simultaneously. It also actives the integrated GPS so you can be found, assuming whoever it contacts has some sort of device equipped to communication with the IcePhone. Spec highlights:

  • GSM Quadband 850/900/1800/1900, GPRS/EDGE
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA UMTS 2100 connectivity
  • Freescale iMX31 532 Mhz CPU
  • 3″ 240 × 400 px 65K color transflective TFT touchscreen
  • Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro OS
  • 3.1 mpx camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • Built-in GPS
  • Wi-Fi b/g
  • 1250 mAh battery
  • Dimensions: 127×60.8×23.3 mm
  • Weight: 210 g

According to The Medical Phone Ltd, the IcePhone should be available in Thailand soon and in the UK before May of 2009, retailing at an even $1,000. We shall see…

The e-ink keypad I’ve seen on a recent prototype device is a much better solution than this.

Ok, not that is just a little out of hand. I wonder if it is going to be as huge as the old iMate JasJar. I can think about alot of better things to spend a grand on.

How do you type on that thing if the keyboard is in the middle? Either the bottom flips up, covering the keyboard, or it flips down, meaning the keys of the bottom third are the back of the middle third…

I have a cool idea I want to market. Its like a computer with a 16″ screen and it flips open to show off a full keyboard. You can download an VOIP program and even make calls. I think I will call it a laptop

    No.
But if you were to go forward with it I’d reccomend having the gamepad on the other side of it’s panes so you can see what button you are pressing when you are gaming, or keep it closed when you decide to game blindly.

Wow! This is a joke posting, right? That thing looks like a credit card billfold. A triple flip? Must be a biyatch to hold up to your ear. I’ve got to say that it looks rather unique. I’m sure it will be the only form factor of it’s type for a long time to come. Seems like something Motorola might try and they’re well practiced in epic failures.

The iCEphone is part of a suite of highly innovative mobile phone products designed to save and protect life. iCE (in case of emergency) products feature both hardware and software, which can work independently or in combination. Although originally designed to meet the exacting requirements of the US and British military and the emergency services, the utility of the core technology has also generated significant interest from the consumer marketplace and two versions are now planned – a consumer version and a military/emergency services version.

The unique, GROUND-BREAKING multiple form-factored iCEphone is the “Swiss Army Knife” of handsets. Beautifully engineered to military standards, it combines QWERTY keyboard Windows Micro notebook with proper mouse, Dual SIM 3G touchphone, Games player with multiple triggers, GPS device with SatNav, and medical emergency software which could save your life.

The iCEphone is a stunning new micro-notebook phone. It is the Swiss army knife of handsets: it changes shape quickly and easily to be a touch screen phone, micro note-book, a games player, camera and video call handset. It is very much a productivity device, with large keys, designed as the ultimate in convergence devices. As one senior mobile executive remarked – ‘someone has finally figured out how to put a laptop into a mobile phone’. iCEaid is a mobile application that provides emergency first aid advice, based on internationally recognised protocols. This can be at several levels, from someone with no medical training, through first responders to ambulance crews. If this software is used once in a lifetime, it will be worthwhile having it on your phone. There are also accessories designed for specific markets such as the iCEpic (personal information carrier), a USB device designed to carry medical information in a safe secure manner and iCE e-notes, an e-notebook software application for doctors and other healthcare workers.

The iCE solutions are designed to assist anyone, anywhere in the world affected by a medical emergency, by reducing the time to receive appropriate treatment – the critical factor in emergency medicine. The iCEphone is due for release early in Q2 09 and the Company is seeking distributors and network partners. iCEphone is the brand of The Medical Phone Limited, a new ambitious company set up by a few individuals with significant business, medical, military and mobile phone expertise. They have offices in Edinburgh, London and Bangkok.
