Forget the iPhone, Verizon pits the Storm against the Bold

In a little bit of marketing madness, Verizon Wireless matches its flagship BlackBerry Storm up against the BlackBerry Bold. We have already seen them champion the Storm over the iPhone and AT&T retaliate with their own smear campaign. Now it is time to take the smack talk to another level with some BlackBerry on BlackBerry action. So why does Verizon think the Storm is way better than the Bold?
- Verizon has a bigger and better network
- The Storm’s screen trumps the Bold and it has the cutting edge SurePress input method. The Bold is old school with its trackball and physical QWERTY keyboard
- The Storm has more : more microSD storage and more megapixels
- The Storm has both VZ Navigator & BlackBerry maps (though we’re not sure we would consider VZ Nav to be an advantage)
- The Storm has V Cast Music with Rhapsody, while the Bold has nothing. (Guess Verizon does not think too highly of the AT&T mobile music store. They wont even acknowledge its existence!)
Last but not least, Verizon answers the age old question, why doesn’t the Storm have Wi-Fi? Its answer: because you don’t need it on the nation’s biggest and best network! Those are fighting words there, Verizon. We will let our AT&T peeps respond in the comments. Fire away when ready!
Thanks, Luke!

“@Scott: Does anything have infrared? I’ve seriously never heard of infrared on phones, what is it used for?”
You many not use it or need it and good for you, but in my line of work it’s pretty much required.
(Unless you were serious that you have never heard of it? Which I just can’t believe you’re reading BGR and don’t know what iR is).
Thanks, bye bye…
I for one am sick of the “It’s The Network” crap, only the brainwashed buy into that crap.
All things being equal VZW is the LAST carrier ANYONE should choose!
Man puh-leaze!!! I feel special for not being one of the dip-wads that actually buy into that BS that VZW is selling… tisk tisk; you fools!!!!!!
You bring out a very good point my young friend that has definitely been forgotten in this day and age of ubiquitous coverage.
CDMA can’t hold a candle to the transparent roaming capabilities of GSM!!!
Verizon? are you kidding me? I had verizon and they kicked me off because I lived in Alaska. Verizon canceled my account and wouldn’t turn it back on so i could keep my same phone number. The only national company up here is AT&T and I’ve been extremely happy with them for the past 8 months.
Not too excited about a first generation of touch screen for any brand(even though I do love me some crackberry) Just got my new Bold and I’m in love.
Build a Bold with touchscreen so we can forget about all this nonsense already.
baaadandy,
Let me break this down for you, because this is what they DON’T tell you.
The BIG RED map they show you, isn’t really what they make it out to be. First off:
Mobile Web, PIX/FLIX, E-mail, ONLY WORK in the EXTENDED ENHANCED SERVICES AREA(Roaming:when you phone shows “Extended Network”) IF you have a NATIONWIDE calling plan NOT AMERICA’s CHOICE.(check the fine print at the bottom of the map)
NEXT,
This is the biggest bunch of bogus they like to pull and you probably never notice it. Has your phone ever said “Extended Network” and lets say its on the weekend. Watch your bill come through, you will be using your “Anytime Minutes” WHY you ask, because in Verizon’s “fine print contract” you SIGNED it will state that your Night&Weekend minutes “ONLY” apply to their network NOT roaming. Break it down more for you Verizon N&W minutes ONLY work on their “ENHANCED SERVICES MAP”. As soon as I realized this I canceled my phone contract. Sorry my young fellow, but Verizon has pulled a sheet over your eyes, you will soon come to realize this as I did.
What I said above isn’t just bogus stuff I am throwing out there. I sold it for a couple years and was “lying” to customers, because even I didn’t know this UNTIL I took a vacation and used my Verizon phone and found that Night&Weekend minutes DON’T work in the “Extended Network”(you phone will show this). After that I quit and will never return. You will NOT read this ANYWHERE on Verizon’s website and you will never get anyone who works for them to say otherwise; they might not even know it. Want to know more about it, send me an e-mail kobeskd@yahoo.com
Being a former Verizon Wireless employee in the Retail Sales channel, I am familiar with these biased (dare I say “propaganda-like”) phone comparisons.
I do love me my Verizon, but they talk about VZ Navigator and not AT&T’s TeleNav…why because it’s not AT&T branded or skinned??
Also, like said above, AT&T’s mobile music store is not mentioned but VCast with Rhapsody (again, VZW branded, yadda yadda).
I do have to say I am quite surprised of the preloaded 8GB MicroSD card from Verizon, the company that stopped including holsters in boxes of their “dumbphones” (I think once the RAZR came out they were all sans holsters) and charged $14.99 for the plastci and $19.99 for the leather.
Peace all…
Guys,
This document has misleading information, but it wasn’t meant for you or I to see in the first place. ATT’s docs about Verizon and the storm were also very misleading, and even more so, yet, again, ATT didn’t mean for us to see it. It makes sense for Verizon to pit the Storm against the Bold, so that employees can explain the advantages to their customers. Yes, the Bold has ATT Nav which maybe just as good, or slightly better than VZ Nav on the Storm, depending on who you talk to. I have both, and I like both. As far as 3G….Verizon has more coverage, hands down. As far as 3G speeds, HSDPA has the “ability” to be faster than EVDO Rev A. In my regular usage of both, I have yet to notice a consistend difference in speeds. As far as the wifi debate, if wifi is valuable to you, then, of course, it’s important to you. What Verizon’s trying to say is that, because it has the most 3G coverage of any U.S company, you aren’t going to miss wifi, which is much much more limited in coverage. However, this is only true on a case by case basis. As was already said, wifi has the ability to be faster than anyone’s 3G, and may be available in areas where you don’t get a 3G signal. So, all in all, it’s better to have the option to have wifi, than to not have the option. The Bold is a great device, and has a slightly faster processor and wifi. The Storm has an included 8GB micro sd card, better camera, slightly higher resolution screen, and larger screen. Everything else comes down to whether you prefer a physical keyboard, or larger screen which touch capabilities. I personally, would love to have both. And honestly, I like both more than the Iphone 3G!
@ Neutral,
I have to tell you, that what you said is absolutely incorrect. Nights and Weekend minutes do work on Extended network. Well, at least it did on all 5 of my lines.
-Bold supports wifi, Bold wins.
-Bold has a faster processor, Bold wins
-Bold allows you to use office, storm does not. Bold wins.
-Bold is not on Verizon, Bold wins.
even Verizon can’t come up with any worth while advantages, their biggest “advantage” is “ummm… it’s on the Verizon network so it’s the best!”
The only advantages to the Storm is the slightly better camera (last time I checked 3mp wasn’t all that great) and a big pretty touch screen.
@Joe,
Had to comment on your false info, the Storm does have office, and allows for both creating and editing of office documents. This is stated everywhere.
The truth is, they are both very good devices, and very similar, and they both have a few pros and cons over the other. Let’s not be as misleading as Verizon and ATT have been in these internal documents.
I want the Storm, I really do, but I decided on the Bold because I heard AT&T will eventually get the Bold. That and it doesn’t have Wi-Fi on VZW and it should with AT&T –
VZW didn’t even mention AT&T Nav. The Bold can hold up to 32GB SD card, not max of 8GB.
I can throw a rock and hit West Virginia from my house in Ohio yet I can not get a Verizon contract but if my home where 50 feet east I could, yea they have great coverage everywhere I just can’t use it. I’ll stick with my iPhone and happily use the WiFi at home where NO wireless carrier has a signal !! so much for not needing Wifi.
What are they talking about?! If the Bold wasn’t exclusive they wouldn’t even be talking about it right now. And Verizon might get their feelings hurt when they realize the truth about WiFi.
I thought about this one, too. Bold is $100 more expensive (plus any and all taxes where applicable). Where I live, those $100 turn into $111. Anyway, why did Verizon not put the price difference, i.e.”Our Storm is better because it costs less” haha….
consumers realize that VZ’s blind arrogance is not superior to the truth
VZ looks dumb issuing this document
what also cracks me up…why buy a BB if you can’t use voice and data at the same time? don’t you buy a blackberry for data functionality? so why buy one that doesn’t allow you to use it while you are on a conference call or on the phone at all?
it’s pretty funny really. the storm is yet another wanna-be device, and pimping it under false pretenses will only shine a light on that fact.
Well neutral, maybe you are a little rusty because you are incorrect with the information on the way minutes are deducted when roaming, just like It’s me just said. As for data roaming, yes this only really works with a nationwide plan, but I’ve had a PDA for years so I have been able to data roam for a long time now.
@ LOL:
The kool-aide drinkers on BGR don’t really care about facts they are still claiming having NO WiFi is somehow a positive thing!
They compare the measly 700 apps for BB against the 8,600 for iPhone and say they have plenty of apps. All while claiming the iPhone is not a smartphone!
I use voice and data all the time on the iPhone!
Funny but INTERNAL! lol
Whoever made this chart obviously has been left in the dark. I personally downloaded music OTA from napster through my MEdia net with AT&T. Also the failed to mention that the bold has a 624mhz processor that the storm does not. There is a reason why the storm is cheaper. Also the touch screen on the storm is pressure sensitive not heat sensitive. This means that you have to press the screen harder than you would with an iphone. This is obviously a failed attempt to give verizion and rim an answer to the iphone. Rim is fine the way they are. Everyone go to AT&T and get a bold. Its definitely worth it. Leave the storm for people who want flash over functionality.
It’s not advertising… it’s for internal purposes only.
We’re all NUTS to “discuss” what amounts to nothing.
To each their own, I would be *jealous* if Verizon had the Bold and we had the precious “Storm”. I’d get it, but I would be drooling what great device I was missing out! Bold and AT&T have been perfect for me for a very long time. You have no idea. Haha
Plus, the Storm would have WiFi on AT&T lol….and the Bold would suffer a ominous brutal supression of its endless capabilities. Best device I have owned. And that’s a lot!
