Nokia 6650 finally gets official on AT&T

No, the Nokia 6650 is most certainly not the most capable S60 smartphone out there. Truth be told, it’s probably not even in the top 20. Today’s announcement from AT&T that the 6650 is now official and available nation-wide is still huge news for Symbian fanatics here in the US because it represents what will likely be the first S60 3rd Edition phone to be accepted by more than a select few passers-by. The E62 was a pretty big failure and the N75, well, let’s not even go there. The 6650 shows clear signs of promise however, marrying a sexy form factor with S60 functionality and perhaps most importantly, a low price point. A quick refresher:

  • GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, HSDPA 850 / 2100
  • 99.7 x 47 x 16.2 mm, 112 g
  • S60 3rd Edition OS, Feature Pack 2
  • 2.2-inch 240 x 320 pixel TFT display, 16M colors
  • Second external 128 x 160 pixel TFT display above three touch-sensitive buttons
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
  • 2 megapixel camera with flash
  • Integrated GPS
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Made entirely out of recyclable materials

According to our scoop last month, the 6650 was due to hit stores on the fourth but delays are hardly a surprise these days. S60 fans should just be happy this phone is actually happening on AT&T. $70 for a sexy 3G Symbian clam shell with GPS, stereo Bluetooth and FP2? Yeah, we’ll take two.

I was excited when I saw this at first, but specs from Forum Nokia show that it only has 20mb of RAM available on boot, which is the same as all of the older, buggier S60 devices (like the original N95 with pre-demand paging firmware).

They actually did arrive at our store on the 4th, just need to go through our 6555’s first. A little laggy but great reception.

That’s an impressively big batter concerning it’s just a mid-range S60 clamshell. Although, then again, smartphones in general are battery hogs so this is definitely a good thing. I wonder how long this will actually last in real time.

We had a nokia rep come into our store showing us the phone yesterday, its definitely a cool phone for its price. Talk time is rated at 4 hrs with 3g.. She kept bragging about that, I guess it could be worse.

Hey I love my N75, so bite me. Unlike certain Jesus-phones, I can use Bluetooth wireless to sync iTunes, contacts, calendar, and photos; and browse the phone’s file-system to transfer and delete items. Hopefully the 6650 will do all that and more; the addition of GPS is great but too bad they dropped the FM radio (which I actually use).

Note the obvious error in the specs; its actually HSDPA 850/1900.
