HTC announces first GSM/WiMax integrated phone: MAX 4G

If you’re reading this, we hope you’re sitting down because this news is gonna blow you away. HTC recently announced its plans to launch the HTC MAX 4G, the world’s first GSM / WiMax integrated handset! Judging from the looks of that picture along with others floating around the net, it looks like it’s going to be a hell of a gorgeous phone. Of course, HTC rarely disappoints but this is definitely going to be high up on the “want list” for us. The only problem? Well, here it is straight from HTC PR:

While the HTC MAX 4G is being announced with Russia’s Scartel on their ‘Yota’ brand WiMAX network, and is not slated for introduction in the US market, the HTC MAX 4G represents the commitment to cutting edge innovation that HTC is bringing to consumers around the world.

Not slated for introduction in the States? Come on, HTC! First the Touch HD and now this? We’re sure that for those of you desperate enough (and who can blame you?), you’ll find a way to snag one unlocked and use it here where WiMax is available. So, just to continue with the tease, here are some specs for the new device:

  • 3.8″ TFT-LCD flat touchscreen with WVGA 800 x 480 resolution
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • TouchFlo 3D
  • 528MHz Processor
  • GPS
  • WiFi
  • 5 megapixel auto-focus camera
  • Secondary VGA camera for Video Calling
  • VoIP
  • Accelerometer for portrait/landscape modes

Is anyone frustrated beyond belief yet that this isn’t hitting the US? Not only does it have video calling but when two users are on Russia’s Yota Mobile WiMax network, calls are automatically routed as VoIP - how cool is that? Anyway, before you start turning green with envy, just remember how much you’ll have to sacrifice in Mother Russia when snagging the latest and greatest devices.

I’m a big fan of HTC, but after I read that they had no plans for bringing the HTC Touch HD to the US, I buckled and bought a iPhone. I wish they would show the US more love….I could be talked into switching back to a HTC WM phone if the right one is released.

What the heck is wrong with the US market? Why does HTC constantly dis one of the biggest markets in the world? Do they have so little backbone that they’re unwilling to introduce a product without the carriers’ blessings or do they just not give a damn about us consumers in the US? geez!!!

I’m really hungry for a non iPhone full screen smart phone. First the Touch HD isn’t coming to the States, then the Blackberry Storm is only on Verizon (I’m with ATT), now this HTC is only going to Russia? I guess Americans don’t have enough disposable income for HTC to be bothered.

    Sex, please?

Now if only HTC would ditch Windows Mobile and come up with their own Operating System or start running Symbian like every non-U.S. country that’d be wonderful.

what good would this be I’m the US?

The only carrier using WiMax is Sprint, but they use CDMA, not GSM.

We would need a CDMA / WiMax version or a GSM / LTE version for ATT or a CDMA / LTE version for Verizon.

A GSM / WiMax phone I very limited in usability in most countries. Even most of Europe and Asia have committed to LTE instead of WiMax.

That’s probably why HTC is releasingin Russia.

Bet we see a CDMA/WiMAX ver released here… there would be no US carrier interested in a GSM/WiMAX phone….

You know, I’ve grown weary of getting mad at OEMs not releasing sexy phones in the US. HTC, Nokia, Samsung, S.E., etc have all burned us and made us wait months on end and I’m done with it. If it comes out it’ll come out, if not, it won’t. If there’s anything I learned it’s that generally Americans are cheap and would rather get a free Moto Razr (from 2003?) today, than shell out $299 to get the hottest of hot new phones…and that’s not going to change.

Frankly I think AT&T’s relationshp with iPhone is the main reason we aren;t seeing a lot of high end smart pone choice state side…

You really can’t knock HTC for that.there is no WiMax running here yet, Sprint is still testing and having all sorts of financial problems.

I’m a Sprint customer so this is not an anti Sprint Rant nor is it an Anti HTC rant because I will be getting myself one them sweet Touch Pro’s

We will get a version soon wether its a Touch HD or Max 4G. HTC is not stupid and they will step their game up in the states. But it is also up to the carriers to put pressure on them.

    Just my 2 cents

If HTC is not bringing this phone over as well, let’s boycott them. This is the second great phone they are not bringing over here. All we have is the iPhone (That name in itself is starting to upset me). HTC go screw yourself and sell your phones in the jungle if you want to. I won’t even look anymore.

ALL! LET’S BOYCOTT THEM AND NOT BUY PHONES FROM THEM ANYMORE.

    HTC you suck!!!!!
