Rumor no more: Nokia makes the E63 official
Yes, it was shown at the Symbian Smartphone Show a few weeks ago but as we all know no press release means nothing is official just as much as shipping trial devices doesn’t make a device official. Thankfully today the boys and girls of Espoo announced the “successor” to the E71. Expected to retail at around €199 before taxes and carrier subsidies, the device should be out relatively soon in Europe. Sadly, Nokia was extremely stingy with the specs of the phone (which is seriously uncool) so forgive us for rehashing what most have already figure out. We’ll have to leave the rest for when Nokia decides it wants to let us know.
- 113mm x 59mm x 13mm, 126g
- S60 3rd Edition FP1, Symbian v9.1
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA
- 320×240 TFT display
- 110MB internal memory
- 2 megapixel camera
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1
- 3.5mm stereo headset jack
- microSD
- microUSB
- 11 hours talk-time (ha!) and 432 hours of stand-by
- Pathetically small space key
- All-plastic body (remember the terrible reception of the E71’s metal body?)
- No side buttons
When it goes on sale in the next few weeks, in Europe at least, the E63 will be available in both Ruby Red and Aquamarine Blue. It will also come sporting 1 GB of free Files on Ovi storage, enabling users to remotely access their PC files on the go.

No FP2?? That’s lame!
However, the 3.5mm headset jack is nice, as that was the only thing missing from the E71 (and maybe UMA), but no side-buttons at all, not even for volume or camera??
Is this 3G or not? There are so many conflicting reports.
Does “all plastic” mean just the case — or are there metal structures. my E61 is built very well, although I think it it also has a plastic case.
Made in Finland or China?
@Michael,
I think you may need a spec update “GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA” – the E63 does not have HSDPA, it is only WCDMA, so the “slower” 3G, with a max speed of maximum speed 384 kbps.
@charlie,
Yes, it is 3G, the slower version. And, it comes in NA bands:
-E63-1 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100
-E63-2 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900
-E63-3 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/2100

Still the same HORRIBLE keyboard! Looks nice but when you actually try to use it the mistakes run wild!
Am I the only one who has had zero problem with the E71 reception? I honestly have had none, outside the occasional network error (no connection drop) from all those darn iPhones hogging my channels! The 3.5 mm headphone is nice (maybe a bit late) though. The keyboard is not horrible at all, just like many others it takes time getting used to.. not sure about the super tiny spacebar there …
@smalldog: thanks. that help a lot and explains the confusion.
If AT&T picks it up, and doesn’t kill the VOIP client, I might pay $70 for it. I’ve found EDGE to be quite usable. WCDMA would probably be a bit better. Of course, if they are going to make be pay $30 a month for data I’d rather have the real high speed.
GPS?
That space-bar looks scary but I might be able to adjust.
Looks like the E63 gets no:
*IR port
*HSPDA
*Use as a data modem
*GPS
*T.A. headphone jack
@niftydl:
No, you’re not. The vast majority of E71 users never encountered any reception issues. I have both the gray and white versions of the E71 and reception is on par with my N95-3 and BB 8310.
BGR had one unit that may or may not have had rf issues, and off of that experience, determined that all E71’s were this way.
Journalistic integrity; this site lacks it.
I have no reception issues with my E71. space bar on E63 really looks scary
@niftydl:
I haven’t had any major reception issues either. Taking into account that the e71 is in fact a nokia, and nokias from my experience have bad reception compared to motorola or even my perl and curve, the phone is decent. I have had far Worse reception on my previous three nokias.
The keyboard is somewhat insane. Sorry. Took a long time to get used to it and if it wouldnt be fer the incredible t-9, this phone would be impossible to use. I mean, when u want to type “and” but u type “Sno” and yet somehow it still comes up as “and”, you know u have ur self a good phone. Lol
@chris B:
I understand what u mean when u say that this site lacks journalistic integrity but, u have to understand that this is after all a blog on leaked info about phones. what its not is a publication thats been around for a 105 years and needs to stand up to the harshest scrutiny some pompous heavyweight critic can dish out in order to not loose its readership cause everyone listens to that one critic. Probably cause he/she has been around for a 105 years as well. Lol.
The way I look at it is that bgr gives u “ideas” to go and further research if u choose too. when they said that the e71 had bad reception, for one I’m used to it cause its a nokia and two, I went to all sorts of forums to see what everyone is saying. And u know what, they weren’t the only ones completing about it.
Above on this blog, Nokia did a Blackberry flip imitator. Now they’ve done a Blackberry Bold imitator.
Some people at RIM headquarters gotta be really ticked off.
@Chris B
The reception troubles of the E71 is well documented. If you have one or have access to one check for yourself. It’s a huge design flaw and is the reason why most devices are frugal with their use of metal at best.
Really another e-series device but you haven’t gave me a chance to win the e71. I’m still waiting on the contest I love the e71 I i win it i would figure out some way to mod and inprove the signal. I must have it just can’t pay 500 or so. Hopefully the kid reads my message. And thinks of a great contest but not to hard I Want To Win!!!!!!!!!
