AT&T Fuze unboxing, first impressions

We actually weren’t even going to do an unboxing / first impressions post. Seen one HTC Touch Pro, seen ‘em all, right? Wrong, guys. In a rare example of AT&T not scumming down their devices (adding crapware, horrible themes, removing features, blocking stuff), we think they’ve actually made the device better! For starters, one of the most important things is the connectivity. The regular Touch Pro does not have tri-band UMTS/HSDPA support. The AT&T Fuze does. Also check this… on the original Touch Pro, there were no “OK” and “Start” buttons. A complete meltdown of necessary Windows Mobile functionality. Well, AT&T’s Fuze has both. Instead of the numbers being laid out across the top row of keys, they are in classic number pad format on the left side of the keyboard, and we’re actually really feeling the default AT&T TouchFLO theme here. They even made it so the Start menu was always visible on the home screen, too. We approve. How about a short, short summary? The AT&T HTC Fuze is the best Windows Mobile Professional phone on the market. Good? Make sure you hit the gal-gal for all the shots!

Note: we haven’t reviewed the Sprint Touch Pro, so we’re not sure if the key layout is the same, etc.

The layout is not the same. the sprint version has the number row up top and no ok or start buttons.
The back of the att diamond is also faceted and the sprint version isnt.

Besides that i believe the att version is a hair thinner than the sprint version.

Phone looks great! I’m so happy AT&T made the right decision on keeping the “diamond back” unlike Sprint. I think the front of the Touch Pro for Sprint looks better because of the chrome and black Sprint background but the back and sides of the HTC Fuze for AT&T look way better than the Touch Pro.

So many phones to choose from this holiday season: iPhone 3G, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Storm, (coming soon…) G1, Touch Pro, HTC Fuze, and if you consider it, the Touch Diamond. I don’t though because the Touch Pro/HTC Fuze outclasses it on many different levels.

I am leaning towards the Blackberry Storm so far because it combines my two loves great email/messaging and touchscreen capability. And of course I can’t forget it has a great video capability due to the high resolution screen… Too bad I can’t seal the deal with it just yet because BG didn’t like the Storm he got to play with that much and thought the software was buggy.

BG, I’m still waiting on your impressions of the Storm and if it is worth switching from my iPhone 3G and from AT&T to Verizon. I know Verizon is the better choice of the two for voice+data already so you don’t really have to address that too much. ;)

How exactly do you proclaim something “the best” when (a) you’ve not actually USED the device in-depth, and (b) you’ve not even used the CDMA counterpart either??? Come on, BG, you’re cred is going the way of the stock market of late.

Uh… because this is my job and I’ve used pretty much every single Windows Mobile Professional device on the planet? I don’t believe the fact I haven’t played with a Sprint Touch Pro really matters all that much, does it? The keys as others said above are the same as the regular OEM Touch Pro and that = fail.

LOL I haven’t decided to sell it just yet, I really LOVE my iPhone 3G! Apple has just been pissing me off lately because I have to hack my iPhone 3G just to get simple features like running programs in the background and viewing hi-res videos through youtube by using MxTube to download them in high-quality. But, if I were to sell it, I would probably sell it for $400 since its an 8GB but in perfect condition. My buddy sold his iPhone 3G 16GB for $600. So I feel the pricing is pretty fair. I’m just trying to get the money I spent for my iPhone 3G back to put towards the Storm and pay my way out of contract with AT&T.

LOL damn BG, did you have to do him like that? hahaha! I don’t even know why you respond to some of these cats on here with their dumb comments. But hey, I guess since it is YOUR site, you might have some type of obligation to do so. But I personally feel your way above them and they need to stay in their lanes…

I found this video that shows the Touch Pro and Fuze side by side. You can see what’s same and different. Supposedly part two shows software, but haven’t found it yet.

The most important phone feature that you didn’t review was the reception and I have to say the P4600 AKA FUZE with radio version 1.02.25.32 SUCKS!!!! it has to have the worst reception of ANY phone I have ever seen, and Touch FLO is so slow…though I have to say i have only used one other touch flo device the HTC touch it’s just laggy laggy laggy… but even then it’s just terrible reception, and I’m comparing this to some other crummy phones. I am going to have to try out the Samsung Eternity tomorrow.

…and battery life is horrible. Good device and I think if you need a WM device this is it. But damn, when will WM ever partner with a device that can get 2 days of battery life? never.

Love the site BG but I have to agree with Ricky– you talked about the keyboard layout and then didn’t post any picts of it. Also, I had the Touch Pro from Sprint for a little over a week and I like a lot about the phone but also had some reservations. I.E. it is unbelievably thick (which I actually got used to pretty quick), the odd grayish silver color that Sprint went with, and Touch Flo would lag or skip whenever I would wake the phone up or close the keyboard.

Anyway, I just wish we could get the Touch HD on this side of the pond– I would put up with lagging software to have that sweet looking device.

Oh yeah, the battery life was horrendous as well– but I guess you would have to expect that with such a powerful phone.

BG, how come you declare the fuze the best WM by just looking at the box. What about a review, use it a little bit and also let us know compare to what.

tri-band? does that make it the best. every good phone is triband these days. even the cheap ones.

Kind of Numeric key pad. it’s that an awesome innovation? besides it’s subjective some may n ot like it.

Com’on! we expect more than a blank statement from BGR. Do you know what kind suspect thought go thru the mind of your readers?

I’m not gonna lie here, this one’s boss and all but I like my Tilt more. The only advantages here are more memory, faster CPU, and a bigger keyboard. But hey, it’s just my $0.02 after I used a non-production model at ATT.

    Josh says:

I’ve got my Fuze and I have to say, although I didn’t like the idea of the numeric keypad (even after I bought it), it does make the transition from the Tilt just that much easier.

And having had both phones, I can say with as much certainty as one could muster, that this is shaping up to be a better device than at least the Tilt (don’t know about best WM device ever, but still). Although (and I know we’re not supposed to plug other sites), XDA has had WAY more time to work bugs out of the Tilt than the Fuze. I expect they’ll wrap up the radio and rom issues with this one just like they did with the Tilt- which by the way has HSDPA city-wide across Houston, and is giving me approximately 2 full days of battery. That’s with no bluetooth, no wifi, but over 500 emails a day coming through our Exchange 2007 (push) server.

I think the Fuze will be juuuussssst fine!! :)
