AT&T finally pushes out BlackBerry service books for AIM and ICQ

In a move that can only be described as “long overdue”, AT&T has finally pushed out the service books necessary to run the RIM native AIM and ICQ clients on the carrier’s BlackBerry handsets. The clients have long been available to other carriers, (unless you did the bait and switch Service Book trick) but now that AT&T has finally given them their blessing, the apps can be had through mobile.blackberry.com. Both apps integrate perfectly with the OS of course, and compliment the Google Talk app and Windows Live Messenger app in rounding out the free IM solutions available directly from BlackBerry.

AIM: is AOL instant messaging.

Yahoo!, MSN, Google Chat…they are all related. The only thing they had on there before (pre-loaded) was BlackBerry Messenger; but I know people who put Google Chat on there 8100’s.

Yahoo are you kidding me, I was able to get yahoo messager on my tmobile 8700G from day one from mobile.blackberry.com.

BTW did Att release 4.5 os yet?

Looks like they’re a little worried about the launch of the Storm here shortly. Those apps have been supported by Verizon for a while and are coming native on the Storm. AT&T realizes they better step up to the plate or lose customers.

maybe not the best place for this, but anyone know how to get AIM or any of the IMs to work on a unlocked ATT 8310 that is now on T-mobile? The IMs were installed after i had it unlocked and working on t-mobile but i always get the message “Service not enabled for this handheld” whenever i try to log into any IM

I’ve been running Yahoo IM for months now on my AT&T Curve. There’s a trick where you can get the service books on the device, but it’s not an easy task. Runs great with no problems!

To describe exactly how long overdue this is: before ever getting my blackberry I only used AIM on my PC since like 98ish. When I got my blackberry, I don’t think I’ve ever logged into AIM again, and have just switched to gTalk, cause it’s always on and always with me.

Get someone to do a backup of their service books only that have the services you desire, load the backup and you should be good to go. Never done it so this is just a guess. I’m w/ Sprint so I’ve had these options.

Actually, I bought the bold a few days ago and have been wanting to install yahoo and aim. Att finally approved the service books for both…just today. So what I did was I deleted my old versions that I was desperately trying to tweak and reinstalled the program and just like magic…
