Bell counters Telus’ $99 smartphone plan

It looks like actual value is going to be offered to Canadian smartphone users in time for Christmas because Bell is going to match Telus’ amazing $99 smartphone plan. Created in anticipation of large sales of the BlackBerry Storm, both Canadian CDMA-come-HSDPA carriers are offering up plans consisting of the following:

  • 1,000 daytime minutes (unused airtime from Bell rolls over to the next month)
  • Unlimited evenings and weekends after 9pm
  • Call display
  • Voicemail
  • Unlimited SMS
  • Unlimited email and data
  • Unlimited BlackBerry Messenger and IM

To many living outside of Canada these plans might not seem like a lot, but in the pathetically uncompetitive and monopolistic Canadian wireless marketplace this is a huge leap towards progress. Huge!

Now if we could get Rogers to play along, the Canadian market may actually be a brighter place.

Now if they would only get rid of the SAF and 911 fee so that would actually be all in for $99

I can only assume this plan does not support BES access. Now THAT would be a miracle!

Are bell and telus allowing tethering on this plan?

Might actually break my habit of renewing with robbers every year on a new 3yr and get a storm if it does.

I really hope that this does work with BES. If this is the case this will be awesome!

Taxes? Yes because the companies can control the amount of tax they have to charge

I would suggest you call the client care number and ask for the Max 45 plan, you just have to pay the service activation fee each month, for 1 year. After 1 year it will be somewhere around $45 a month but you get 700 daytime minutes, free after 8pm, voicemail 10, and other stuff i can’t quiet remember. I added bundle 20 for the first year to have unlimited text, web browsing, caller id, conference calling.

    Cheers

I’m not sure on what planet you think this is a good deal. I am with Telus, and I have two lines with the following:

    unlimited browsing
    unlimited email
    unlimited IM
unlimited evenings and weekends after 6 pm (5pm on one line)
    1000 daytime minutes
2500 minutes between the two phones
national my faves (five numbers of my choice unlimited calling to or from anywhere in Canada)
Unlimited text to those my faves
One of the phones also has unlimited text to anyone.
Voicemail, call display, call waiting etc. (normally $5 each/month)

One is BB curve, other is BB storm. All of this for $130/month including taxes (15%) and system access fees etc. The $99 plan you mention doesn’t inlude web browsing, and the price doesn’t appear to include taxes or access fees etc…which means for a single phone without web browsing it would appear they are quoting you the same price I pay for two phones with it.
