On a side note: TOMORROW is the First Look, First Touch event in STL and I’m rediculously excited to get my hands on it. Then I will finally be able to form my own opinion on it rather than listening to all this back and forth stuff.

I just hope my experience with it is better than some of those had in Cali. I really don’t want to be disappointed.

Ok but I still don’t understand why brining up FIOS in reference to broadband service touches a nerve. FIOS, for the layman, is Broadband access. My whole point was VZW using 3G in its ads now is a smart move simply so that people will understand that the they offer 3G service and not just broadband which is generally associated with home use.

I agree with Dante though. I think that VZW was afraid that since the iPhone was actually using 3G in it’s name that some people would believe that VZW wasn’t actually a 3G network. In the mobile world, 3G is a more recognized term than broad band. I think more people think of VZW’s broad band as the FIOS home service, which I’d give my left nut for.

I don’t care how wide spread for fast VZW’s broadband network it. Wifi is several times faster. Period. You VZW guys need to consider that, although YOU may not need it or care about it, many do. VZW seems to be the only carrier with a bug up it’s ass about letting devices keep it’s wifi radio. Why? If you have to have a data plan anyway to use the device, why not take a chill pill and keep the wifi?

It’s not just so that you can’t use data for free but also makes sure that you can’t use VOIP. You may be forced to take a data plan but they can only force so many minutes on you a month. If you have the capability to use VOIP on your mobile device, then some of us might be able to reduce the number of voice minutes we use each month. Some of you might live in the outskirts where free wifi is available but in the cites there is plenty.

Also, if you were able to use wifi, you wouldn’t eat into your LIMITED UNLIMITED data plans. VZW may give you the ability to tether your laptop, but remember that 5 gigs a month can be easily surpassed by heavy users. As for AT&T, the iPhone tethering is just around the corner.

Again, if VZW forces a data plan on you anyway, why not let the device have wifi? The arugment that you don’t need it is very weak since VZW does NOT have 3G coverage in every area of the world. Some need it and there is no good reason to leave it out for those who do.

@ brum…how can Verizon make money off of keeping Wifi out of this device when you HAVE to get a data plan with it, with or without Wifi? I really wish you people had a clue before pressing on the keyboard. Whoever buys the device would pay for data whether it had Wifi or not and they did not even ask for this phone! I don’t know how many times this point has to be stressed that it was Vodafone and RIM’s creation and Verizon only got it because Vodafone owns a stake in Verizon. If you do not believe me then look at this new Storm video and the Vodafone guy will explain it to you.

Oh and to everyone else this video is probably the most recent of the Storm…look at it’s orientation and how fast it is now if the T3 one was not good enough for you. It’s not as instantaneous as the commercial but it is pretty fast.

Guys we really shouldn’t be arguing over wifi. For some people, there’s a benefit in having it, and for others, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter for me because wifi uses up more battery life, and is not available in most places that I’d want to use it, and when it is available, most of the time that I’ve noticed, it’s not free anyway. However, I could see the benefit of having it as an option if you are in an area without adequate 3G coverage, but you have wifi, or even free wifi, it’s a good option to have. I’d even say it’s better to have the option to use wifi than not have the option at all. However, for me, it’s not a deal breaker at all considering what I said above.

still you are spot on. Verizon greed, plain and simple. Not knocking the Storm, I think it’s a great phone and I’d really like to get it, but lack of wifi just kills it for me.

Dunno what it’s like in the States but there are plenty of cafes in Oz that have free Wifi, isn’t McDonalds going this way?

The convenience of both 3G and WiFi just makes sense.(to users)

I don’t see how i would ever need any more speed with a Rev. A device on a handset that is pretty limited in what you can do with it anyways. Normal web browsing should be near instant… and you should have no problems streaming video at more than usable quality.

As far as ATT’s network being faster?? Maybe in a lab (theoretical speeds) but all real world test show it to at best be the equal of Verizon’s. (If you can get coverage that is.) There is a reason ATT won’t let you tether with your iPhone and was afraid to unleash the Bold on its network.

Perhaps its the quality or expansiveness of the 3G network used that can make a huge difference as to how much you depend on WiFi for faster data speeds?

I use T-Mobile so of course WiFi is crucial to us!

Technically, both are right. Verizon’s network IS bigger. (much bigger in fact) Once they add Alltel, Verizon will easily have the most 3G coverage in the nation. On the other hand, AT&T’s network DOES have the fastest 3G, because UMTS is simply a faster data technology. EVDO Rev. A is close, but UMTS is still faster. (So fast, in fact, that its technically 3.5 G in many specifications)

The commercial itself was alright. Personally, I thought the iPhone commercials were more effective and interesting.
