Dell to employees: Take some unpaid time off! Leave if you want to!

If you ran a very large company hurting a little in the midst of an economic crisis, what would you do? Well, Dell has the solution for all your woes and conundrums. Step one – encourage your employees to take up to five days of vacation time! The key thing to remember here is to not stress the fact that they will not be getting paid for the time off. You wouldn’t want to spoil the vacation by reminding them that they could be working and earning money instead. Step two – encourage employees to quit their jobs and offer them a little severance package with it, too! You know, everyone is all about instant gratification and while the severance package will cost you now, in the long run you’ll really be saving plenty of money. Even company spokesperson Jess Blackburn says, “The intent is to better position Dell for long-term competitiveness.” Blackburn then goes on to say, “We are asking employees on a voluntary basis to consider taking off (up to) five days … as unpaid time off as a flexible way to reduce costs for the company.” Really? Why not just make the employees work for those five days and not pay them for that time if you really want to cut costs and maintain productivity? At least they’re getting some kind of notice of possible “upcoming events” unlike the poor folks over at Tesla.

Does this mean the executives too will decrease their salary from millions to couple hundred $?????

this is just one more result of sheer greed by corporate higher ups.

I’d say no way in hell.

I don’t know about those guys, but with the cost of living now-a-days, I couldn’t afford to just “vacation” for 5 days w/o pay. I’d be like, thanks, but no thanks. I’ll see you on Monday. :)

They do something similar at ATT it’s called undertime… whenever the calls aren’t coming in they’ll offer unpaid undertime.. it’s not so bad… once and a while leaving a few hours early specially if its offered on a Friday.

I think this is a viable alternative to having to lay off people. Couple this with executives offering a pay cut or doing the same thing and companies could save some serious cash during this economic time.

They are obviously having difficult times balancing the books. I’m not sure what you expect them to do in this economic climate. Restructure the whole company and LAY OFF a ton of employees? It is better for everyone to have some people take some time off so that they don’t have to lay people off. It is self preservation, to keep everyones job alive, and keep it here in NA. In times like this it is not all about you. Surely people will react wrong to the concept, but then they will whine when Dell farms more jobs overseas because they had no other choice.

Ask any auto worker who once had a job in the US why all the plants are closing and moving to Mexico. They refuse to take a wage cut to preserve the job. Now they have no job. Looks good on them.

You all like Dell is the bad guy. They could’ve just laid off people and not give anyone an option. They are letting people who might want to take time off from work and letting people quit to help out the company and their fellow co-workers. Open your eyes. People are buying less computers now among other things because of the economy. Dell is nothing like the oil companies who are making record profits. Think before you comment.

Who on earth are you commenting at?

No one is saying that Dell is the ‘bad guy’. All I see here are people making comparisons to other companies that have done the same thing and others pointing out that if the company is so concerned why don’t they dip into their own pockets so to speak.

I simply stated that if I worked for them and they offered it to me I would decline. Just can’t afford it. However, some of the people that work there can. Those are the people Dell will be relying on.

Exactly. I mean it sucks, but lots of big tech companies do this. It’s way better to take some unpaid time then to get laid off.

Seriously, BG, have you ever worked in the industry you report on? As something other than a salesperson?

I think it’s a win-win situation with that. Dell isn’t forcing anyone to take the time off. I sometimes would like to take unpaid time off when my vacation allotment just doesn’t cut it. I spend so much $$$ for an airflight, it’d be nice to spend some more time there. Lucky me right now is that I don’t have my own family to support through these economic times.

I see this as corporate greed. The president of Global Operations makes $3.19m and the president of the Global Consumer Group makes $4.68m. If they were in for the employees, they might suspend their pay to not lay off people or force this stuff.

Maybe they should spend some time with quality control so they don’t lose business through the huge cracks they have. I’ve been trying to buy a Dell Mini 9 since September 6th and I have had 9 estimated ship dates and 4 order numbers as they have cancelled and reordered my unit. Go to http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3984285
There are hundreds if not thousands of people in my situation. If Dell delivered those units maybe a few less people would need to take time off.

No innovation and terrible customer service has hurt Dell so bad they may never recover. HP and Apple are doing a lot better.
