Confirming the reconfirmed confirmation: Windows 7 in 2009, maybe
2009… 2010… 2009… 2010… Despite the fact that the Windows 7 time line seems to bounce around more than a kid with ADD at Chuck E. Cheese, we’re relaying this news with the hope that Microsoft has finally pinned down a workable time frame. During a presentation at a recent Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft director Jim Howe gave word that Microsoft has targeted next year’s holiday season for the release of its highly anticipated new OS. This wasn’t just a comment in passing either – this was a definitive statement: “Definitely the holiday focus is going to be on 7.” Even still, we have to tread lightly as this is just one man’s word and not an official statement or release from the company. We’re optimistic however, as Microsoft is no doubt working overtime to put the shame of Vista behind it and patch up its slightly tarnished image. All we can do now is hope things in Redmond stay on track and nothing major pops up that would cause the release to be delayed, or as we like to say here at BGR, “RIMed”.

Windows 7 is the next XP
Just like Win 98 > WIN ME (sucked) > Win XP
Now Win XP > Vista (sucked) > Win 7
Anyone that criticizes Vista is an elitist, my friends.
Why Zach why!! The article was going fine as is without the RIMed comment..
RIM’d. That’s funny, considering it was AT&T’s 3G network that they were concerned with.
MS needs to re-create the OS. More bloated Vista code being repackaged as Windows 7 is just not exciting.
“bounce around more than a kid with ADD at Chuck E. Cheese” – Priceless!
@John McCain: Okay dude, the Election is over. Can we all concentrate on something OTHER than politics for ONCE!?!
Ill agree with getting rid of the existing bloated code – Time to start something different and inovative.
Its been a while since something fresh has come out of Microsoft
I agree – they promised so many new advancements in Vista that they cut out. I would have been happy with Windows XP with those cut out enhancements instead of all the Vista eye candy.
mangenius will be the 1st one crying when none of his/her apps work after MS starts something different and “innovative”. Too bad WPF, xAudio2, DX10, Speech recognition, etc are not innovative enough for you.
MS is doing the right thing by addressing complaints about Vista. Except for their sneaky ways of being big brother and collecting data on everything we do. THAT HAS TO STOP NOW! An investigative journalist needs to hold Micorsoft’s feet to the fire. Get started here:

Vista had a huge chunk of the new functionality removed just to meet a deadline to force the sale of Windows ME. The loss of WinFS and other improved features made this nothing more than XP witha new UI and driver problems all over again. Hopefully they’ll pull their shit together and offer a real upgrade instead of offering $400 for Ultimate which let’s be honest, nothing promised was ever delivered except for desktop backgrounds that played as movies… BORING. And with all of this time, Media Center could have been upgraded, WinFS could have been released, and working with device makers to try and resolve the never ending mess of failures could have taken place. Screw Balmer, this was Bill Gates biggest mistake yet.
Will you be able to download the new windows mobile into the HTC Touch Pro?
@hi – I think you got it wrong. Im a big fan of Microsoft and Windows, Ive chosen a PC for that reason so Im not sure what youre getting at.
Remaining status quo will give you the Palm treatment.. Innovation and forward thinking is what will keep Microsoft on top
@Marcelo
I think you might be confused here. Windows 7 is the next Windows operating system. You are referring to Windows Mobile 7 which runs on the Smartphones/PDA Phones/Other devices. The easy answer is no. Two different operating system platforms.
hahaha…omg…windows is still around???
Just the word “windows” takes be back to ‘95 and lines ups that went around the block at the downtown HMV megastore when Win’95 was released. For 700 bucks. I remember the price too cause i laughed at it then when i was 16, and i laugh at it now when im 29. And it’s still around….??? (like a plague)
I honestly don’t understand why Windows is still here. The only thing i can come up with is that it’s been around for such a long time, and it’s so wide spread because there was never any serious competition in the past, that it will take another 5-7 years to dethrone it.
Thats sad that people still have to use that rubbish when u have such whicked OSs as Ubuntu and Kubuntu, OS X, and even the original Linux. (though no humans can really use it lol)
And Microsoft just wont go away either. Even in the phone market they’re trying to push that nightmare they call Windows Mobile. I mean seriously, has anyone actually used this OS. I have. And i had to get a new phone because it destroyed the one i was using it on. How can an OS destroy a phone??? Can anyone explain this too me? First it began to stall while i was browsing the phone. Normal UI stuff. Then it would stall on answering a call. First for a second. Then for 3 or so after depressing the answer button. Then my bluetooth would disconnect it’s self out of the…blue, No longer was i able to answer phone calls via bluetooth. Until, of course, the good old reee-booooot. And yes folks, the problem was fixed until once again, it began stalling. And here we go again. Then, email magically stopped working. But, only for about two days or so at which point, i snapped. Threw the phone at the passenger side door (see, i was driving). The phone bounced off of the door, went up onto of the dashboard. I freak cause i thought the phone is gonna bounce out one of the side windows (it was summer time). Began swerving in my lane as i tried to catch the phone before it escaped only for it to end up on under my feet. At which point i began to repeatedly step on it very very had. (it wasn’t all the phones fault. It was a stressful time. But all is good now
After getting my aggression out. a few minutes later the phone rang from somewhere in the car. The good news was that i was able to bluetooth answer calls from then on. The bad news was that i no longer was able to type on the blackjack II because managed to destroy parts of the keyboard. And this was all caused by the blasted windows mobile os 6.0. The worst, os, i have ever used in my life.
Anyway, this is a perfect example of my inability to comprehend the use and existence of “Windows” products in what is going to be 2009 in a like a month and something.
maxPayne79 you’re stupid beyond comprehension. So in essence in 5-7 Windows won’t be around, huh. Windows is around because tech guys like me love the ability t be able to use their PCs to their satisfaction…not have everything locked down to the point of no return, ie the mac osx…and the same goes for the iphone. If you have Windows so much what the hell are you doing with a blackjack II instead of an iphone?
Competition has always been around idiot…like Apple and Ubuntu OSs just came into existence…if you know your history Apple was even around before Microsoft buddy so ask yourself why Apple is still around with it’s 7% marketshare…the audacity and nerve of these idiots.
P.S. Windows is around because of people like who hate them but still buy their products for some, because like the rest of us these no escaping a company that big, powerful and rich…not that I want to in any way whatsoever.
This is a total nitpick … I know this is a technology website and not a psychology website, but … Just FYI …
The term “ADD” for “Attention Deficit Disorder” is obsolete and was retired with the introduction of the DSM-IV (”Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition”). The correct term, according to the DSM-IV-TR (Text Revision), is “ADHD”, “Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”.

While “ADD” is still used (incorrectly), it is akin to someone walking around speaking conversational Latin in today’s world. =-)
