Apple steals number 2 spot from RIM in smartphone battle

The results are in and news now hitting the smartphone world is that Nokia is slipping down from the peak of the mountain while Apple and RIM work their way to the top. With only the iPhone and iPhone 3G, Apple has managed to step over RIM’s shoulders to take the number two spot in the smartphone world with 17.3% of the market share. RIM, however, isn’t too far behind with 15.2% and climbing with anticipation of the Storm’s release mounting. Nokia, meanwhile, can’t help but sit and watch as it sees its market share drop to 38.9% from 51.4% the year before. Apple is undoubtedly snatching up Nokia and RIM’s business with the iPhone 3G, having sold nearly 7 million units since its official release on July 11. With those sales, Apple is not just second in the smartphone war but it now accounts for 2.3% of the overall mobile phone market – not bad after just a year and a half in business! Still, with two up-and-comers battling and plenty of momentum, Nokia and the Symbian OS remain on top of the pile as the ones to beat. All they have to do now is figure out how to hold the other two down, and that is going to take something pretty big.

You’re kidding right? You must live in a small town somewhere. Hell, every carrier offers at least 5 Nokia phones!

RIM’s got some good stuff out already (got my Bold today on AT&T and it rocks) and there’s some good stuff coming (Curve 8900, Storm 9500/9530.) However, they need to get these handsets OUT THE DOOR – the launch delays are killing not only RIM but the non-AT&T carriers as well.

First off, I am an American. The problem with Americans and “smart”phone knowledge is that most Americans think a smartphone is a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, so guys like Scott have probably seen hundreds of Nokia smartphones and dismissed them as regular cellphones. Scott is an idiot, don’t listen to him. I find it funny that he is in the IT industry and fixes phones for others, yet was totally clueless about how dominant Nokia is in the mobile industry.

To all those Apple sheepboys out there, quit being so defensive with RIM. The fact is, RIM will eventually retain their marketshare and beat out Apple for the #2 spot. The reason for this is……People are all different from one another. RIM has a much larger portfolio of phones that suit different people for different needs (that is why Nokia is the #1 cellphone manufacturer in the world). Smart companies realize that people arent the same, and they dont want to have the same looking phone as everyone else. Havent we learned anything from Motorola and their stupid decision to make practically every phone look like the RAZR?

Bottom Line: Nokia is the best, Americans like Scott have spaghetti for brains, and Apple has the largest sheep farm in the U.S.

Nokia’s phones are actually very functional even the basic phones in their lineup. Symbian is a solid OS for smartphones and with the new push by nokia towards open standards. It looks like they will stay on top for a while. Apple’s growth is amazing regardless if the phone sucks or not. I have had them both since launch 3G and 1st gen and they were good phones for basic use. I now use the bold and am happier than ever. Look towards next year for a shift in the market due to googles stride into the cell phone market. More competition means us in the Usa can get better phones like the rest of the world without having to pay insane premiums to rock it first. I do wish our carriers would release better phones like the touch hd and xperia x1 but our market loves thems some iphones

Why would someone care who was number 1 in sales? I want a phone that suits me, I dont care if it’s #10 in sales, if it works for me then I’ll buy it regardless of where is ranks against other phones, it sounds like some of you are looking for status symbols rather than functionality.

    Feast on this:
The iPhone is twice as reliable as the Blackberry after one year of ownership, a new study by SquareTrade finds. SquareTrade, which sells extra warranties for cell phones and other devices, looked at the failure rates of 15,000 phones covered under its plans. The malfunction rate for iPhones after one year is 5.6 percent, compared to 11.2 percent for the Blackberry and 16.2 percent for the Treo.

Don’t shoot the messenger. Remember not keep saying it over and over the iPhone is not a “smartphone”

All the analysis are wrong, every single one of them!! HAHAHA

Here is a very interesting statistic about customer usage data that I received two days ago. 62% of all BB users never use data on their device compared to 96% of users of the Iphone use data. The bold is a great product but it is still the same old boring BB interface SIMILAR to the curve. They made a week attempt at Full HTML email and brower. If I want new software for the bold I must connect to my computer. That Sucks. Compare it to the Iphone which has really revolutionized how a phone is suppose to function. Real email and real browers I can even send and receive picture messages using Flutter which I downloaded free from the app store over the air. What phone is equal?

    Soooo not true.

VZW only has one (it wasn’t even until recently that they had it either). The Nokia 6205.

Alltel doesn’t even carry a Nokia phone.

*Disclaimer: I’m not saying ANYTHING bad about Nokia. Just simply proving that statement wrong.

Be careful on here. They attack everything that is not completely pro BB and VZW! HAHA

Remember the iPhone is not a “smartphone” HAHA

You know it has WiFi? Nothing at VZW does!

Maybe Apple is just run by “smarter guys”

All those millions of iPhone buyers that have downloaded 200 million of the 7,800 available are wrong!

AT&T offering 20,000 FREE hotspots on the WiFi enabled and NOT neutered iPhone are also stupid! HAHA

*Disclaimer: I’m not saying ANYTHING bad about RIM. Just simply stating the facts.

It can’t possibly be true that RIM was beaten in the last quarter? Can it actually be true? No.

How can AT&T and an iPhone win anything? I really can’t believe it.

AT&T does bought another company adding 1.1 million more wireless customers for peanuts. This on top of the million plus they took from VZW with the iPhone!

    Maybe VZW should have partnered!

Please, don’t pick on me. I am still deciding on the Boring Bold, the Neutered Storm or the iPhone that you guys say is not really a smartphone.

The iPhone was smarter enough to toast RIM and MS so I just can’t decide. Nokia? Well no Nokia at VZW either, or Android.

    Crunch says:

Having only ONE phone to represent it on the mobile front is both impressive, unique, but it will be its downfall. Even if Apple should overtake Nokia, which I don’t think will happen based on the numbers, and projections as of right now, it will ultimately fall back to 3rd or 4th IMO.

There will be another iPhone 3G, which will likely sell very well, but I’d be surprised if it sold as well as the current iPhone 3G. It will have so much more competition, but hardcore Apple fanboys will of course get whatever they put out. I don’t hate Apple, by the way.

I have used one for a week to see if I could make a viable transition happen, but Windows Mobile and Blackberry OS is simply better. I need my push email. ;)

AT&T seems to be trying really hard to push the bold as an iPhone-like product, they have added 3 per customer, no sold without activation or upgrades, and early upgrade pricing rules over here. They’ve also sent like 80 to our store.

at the 399.99 price tag we’ve sold like 10.

When the first iphone came out at a 600 dollar price tag we sold all 80 in 2 hours.

If you’re thinking the bold is going to save rim you’re wrong. It’ll probably be the Storm that does that.

I’m not saying the Bold is a serious iPhone competitor, but it’s not a bad smartphone. It’s a serious leap in just about every way over the 88xx and 83xx series, and it holds its own against the likes of the Touch Pro, G1 and E71.
