as a former employee of alltel..and now as of wednesday a former employee of verizon, I am very, very unhappy with the merger. I hate that instead of working for an organization that cares about both their employees and customers, I am working for a big giant corporation that can’t possibly care about the most important employees…the sales reps.

The FCC’s stipulations placed upon the merger in the name of “anti-trust” laws are unjust and unfair. I am an alltel customer in a non-divested area of the merger. Meaning, when Verizon took over Alltel in my area, Verizon would be a considered a monopoly in this area. Henceforth, Verizon was not allowed to accquire all of the Alltel contracts in the area. My contract being one such contract. So now, alltel still owns my contract, but the closest store that can service me or even pull up account information is 3.5 hours away. On top of that, FCC regulations will no allow Alltel to switch my contract to the more convenient Verizon based once again upon the anti-trust laws. You might think I could just cancel my contract with no penalty based upon the fact that its very inconvenient to not have a store close by. However, Alltel is not letting its customers affected by this problem out of the contract without penalty. Based upon my understanding of signing that contract 1 year ago, I would have a store nearby. Three and a half hours does not constitute as nearby. Therefore, its breach of contract. By the FCC putting these limits of trade on Verizon in this merger, my freedom of choice has been severely limited. Verizon, a great company, should have been allowed to purchase Alltel outright with the original plan to take over all contracts and stores, with coverage and service to Alltel customers only improving.

Bad news actually, this merger has cause over 4000 jobs to be lost between Alltel and there vendor Motorola.
This merger was done primarily to put a competitor (Alltel) out of business and to claim the title of largest carrier.
If you look you will find that Verizon has divested Alltel markets that were not mandated by the FCC agreement.
I wonder what those 5 FCC a-holes are spending their lobbyist payoff earnings on.

Am I the only one concerned with the enormous price increase for verizons plans. As an alltel customer, I have really enjoyed the personal service from Alltel!!! (^)We must now plan a memorial for OUR CIRCLE !!!!

As a former Alltel employee and At&T employee until a back injury. This will hurt AT&T by far.
Anybody that has used both carriers know that AT&T service is close to being terrible. Then with Sprint selling off its towers they are not a threat in the industry.
Verizons phones over all are the best. Then Verizon and Alltel are both CDMA and already have a tower agreement … So there will be no Sprint/Nextel crisis. Its a no brainer now Verizon is hands down the best in coverage and customer service.

Good job FCC. You finally did the job that you are supposed to do. Go BIG RED GO! Verizon treats their employees with great benefits that are 2nd to none. Tuition assistance is higher than any other company in the wireless industry. Take that, take that!!!

@Jdslim It was a regional acquisition with Cingular and SunCom a few years ago in Virginia. It wasn’t the entire SunCom corp being purchased.

As a spouse of an Alltel employee for 10 years, I’ll be sad to see them go. They have consistently improved their service and technology over the years and have always treated our family very well. Plus Chad is a great guy. We’ll miss seeing him around…

So… any recommendations where to move our service? We’re not really excited about moving to “Darth Verizon”

Suncom was just purchased by Tmobile?? Guess Cingular didn’t like it and gave it backm.

Now since Verizion will be reclaimming the #1 position where does that leave ATT. I daubt there is much chance for ATT to reclaim it With Alltell out of the picture it doesn’t leave much for ATT to purchase. The only way ATT can gain large numbers of new customers now will be to take customers from the other service provider by offering customers beter phones or services then the competition. Sorry ATT, you having exclusive rights to sell the Iphone isn’t nearly good enough to make that happen.

About Alltel customers and current contracts, you will most likely be grandfathered in with your same contract. However, any device change whether you choose to upgrade or break current phone you will more than likely have to switch to a Verizon contract.

This is just speculation from when I had SunCom and it was bought out by Cingular.

VZW has had many mergers in their brief history and priceplans have almost always been grandfathered over. In general, all of the previous mergers were seamless. VZW IT leadership is best in class and their track record in billing conversions is second to none. No reason to predict otherwise in this case.
