Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm challenge hits San Francisco, 100 Storms given away
We just got a first hand report that Verizon is setting up a BlackBerry Storm challenge in San Francisco. Here is the deal… in Justin Hermann Plaza in downtown San Francisco, Verizon has setup what you see above. It’s a BlackBerry Storm challenge station consisting of a giant plastic box that shoots air from the bottom to create a whirlwind of Verizon business cards. Contestants step inside and if they can pluck at least seven black BlackBerry Storm cards out of the chaos in the allotted time, they get a free Storm. There’s 100 of them being given out but unfortunately winners won’t get their hands on them until the official release. We’re also told Verizon is taking this challenge on the road to other cities across the US soon. Hit the jump for larger pics!
Thanks, Kenneth!

Nice.
Anyway to tell where they are going to go?
Any idea when they will give the winners the storm? Right then? At launch?
Looks like fun to me!
Once again, dang living in the Midwest. lol
@Steve
If you re-read the post it says “but unfortunately winners won’t get their hands on them until the official release.”
Clever as a promotion but sounds desperate at the same time.
They are promoting the shit out of this phone aren’t they?
Yo BG, spell check homie…
C-H-A-L-L-E-N-G-E
lol
It’s interesting to see how Verizon is advertising the crap out of this phone and hopefully it’ll live up to the hype with the end-users, or they’ll experience what Apple experienced with both of their iPhone launches. Eeee :-/
Does anyone know how long this booth will be up for? The hours its running? I’m only about 45 min away from SF and thinking seriously about making a run up there after work. My SCH-1760 is not really cutting it, even with the 6.1 update.
Da hell man? The midwest can’t get any love? Or do the “red” states get the storm first?
Tisk, tisk BGR. Please be mindful of your grammar when communicating with your people. for example, “There’s 100 of them . . .” is not correct. It should be, “There are . . .” Also, Mr. chev (with a small “c”), California is a “blue” state.
Oh, my goodness me! In my previous post, I forgot to capitalize the “f” in “for example”. I shouldn’t set such a bad example.
Verizon is going in heavy on this phone I see. I hope they have the same thing in NY other than just the scavenger hunt which is way more complex and difficult.
Chev, not sure if you mean “red” by “Verizon” state or if it’s political. However, I should point out that SF is definitely a “blue” city.
As for that other person’s comments about how late it’s open, I think the guy said 8 PM. I’ll go by again later and check it out near lunch time to get more details on hours and future cities. (It’s across the street from my office.)
Come to Dallas
Come to Dallas
Come to Dallas
Come to Dallas
Please check it out and let me know…. that would be awesome. I want that phone so bad… and free is even better
How about bringing that show to the Big Apple? If you can make it here…
Right in front of Madison Square Garden on the Plaza would be ideal for this.
so when is the offical launch?
By “red” state, it was a half hearted attempt at polical humor… I know, leave that to John Stewart

The site says that they are going to hide a bunch of them around Manhattan, and you hunt for them, on Nov. 6.
If this thing gets Voda’s pricing plans, wouldn’t that make the Storm “free” at launch anyway? (With 18mo – 2yr. contract rebates)
Not that I’m against being locked in a windtube and desperately grasping for free stuff. I’ve been basically doing that same thing in my Verizon contract anyway.
I don’t they’ll follow Vodafone’s pricing and if they put this on 34th like you’re asking for Chris you wouldn’t have a chance…there’s way too many people there and on 42nd…maybe 14th might work…but even then I don’t know…if any of us wanted a chance in NY it’d be a problem most places in Manhattan because by the time we made it there all the free ones would be gone.
Read the stuff on the Storm hunt and I think you’ll see they are not actual phones hidden in NY, they will be some kind of display or something that will have a CODE NUMBER written on the. The release says, find all the numbers to have a better chance to win a Storm. So, you just find the numbers and probably go online and use them to enter a drawing.
While I know I shouldn’t underestimate the allure of free stuff, I don’t know how successful this technique will be in SF. If they want people to stop they need to make it really obvious what it’s about, with lots of pictures of the Storm everywhere and some more eye-catching stuff. “FIRST! TOUCH! STORM! GRAB!” Is just going to confuse people. There’s always something that looks similar to this going on in SF, and I honestly wouldn’t know this from a rally for the rights of non-indigenous sand crabs. Pump it up RIM and VZW.
there are only about 20 Storms left the rep said 10 minutes ago. Almost everyone who tries wins, he said theres an almost 70% chance of winning the phone.
The rep also mentioned the 2 year contract price on the phone will “most likely” be $329 minus a $70 rebate and shoudl be out on the 14th?
Thats what the Verizon rep said at the event…
Oh Lord. I hope they’ll come to D.C. They’ll definitely come to D.C…. right?
