I’m willing to bet *anything* that the sales numbers totally contradict this honor. I cannot think of a realistic target market. I guess if there is one we can expect RIM to come out with a “classic” line of devices with color screens & limited but superior funtionality. Device would be free , plans would be cheap ($15-20) and it would include SMS/MMS & (device only) data/browser.
I guess we’ll see…

Bought one for my girlfriend and she seems to like it fine. Obviously, we aren’t the target market for this thing, that’s the whole point! I was even thinking of getting my mom one!

They’re cheap, easy to use, customer service is amazing. I think it’s a home run.

Although I think my iphone 3g deserves gadget of the year.

You know I was just in Target and I saw this stupid device. I laughed and did not think much of it. I mean anyone who needs to access their email probably already have a phone that can do that. And there is plenty of phones that can do that.

So my question is: Who is the target market for this device? I just do not see too many people purchasing it.

I guess not everyone who uses gadgets are those on BGR or those who only focus on phones…if the Peek wins then it wins…it’s great for what it is and for people who use it. I’d put the Zune as gadget of the year but that’s because it is great for what it is and for the features i need it for, same here.

I don’t know about the Peek being the Gadget of the year but its nice for someone with a Metro or a Cricket Phone, you know one of those 45$ a month talk all you want phones but useless for a blackberry user. Although its not intended for the tech types and with that understood it may be gadget of the year…. Naw somebody stuffed the ballot box! I don’t know about googling and smsing from that bad boy as the peek doesn’t have a web browser. But it would be much more useful if the peek would allow for text messaging and unlimited at that for 20$ a month then I’d get one. Unlimited Email and text messaging on a Peek for 20$ would be AWESOME then, and I see no reson why it shouldn’t be able to do that now… Jus Say’n.

The “some people don’t wanna spend $100 on a cellphone/data plan” argument exceptionally illogical.

Soooo… what you’re saying is… Why should anyone pay $50 for cellular + $25 for data when they could keep their $50 cellular and pay $20 for Peek… wait- What?

Ok, so really, price point is not an issue. Peek is not going to make your wallet heavier due to spending less money.

I guess you could argue there might be people who don’t want a cell but want email… but how many could that be? Certainly not enough to make this device successful.

I saw the Peek the other day at Target and it looked like a toy. Rather pointless.

Well, other than business usage. I can see businesses using this over issuing Blackberries to save money. When you’re talking about buying Blackberries for hundreds of employees, then I can see the value of something like Peek.

go to cnet or engadget and search google sms. it’s a feature in their labs section.i don’t have a specific link to give you. i read a bunch of different articles on it the other day. they supposedly took it off labs, but i think it is back up.

Are they serious? I wouldn’t call the iPod touch top gadget of 2008 either.. sure there’s an updated model but the only major difference is the App Store.

Granted, this Peek e-mail device would be useful, as $20 a month is a heck of a lot less than the $100 a month for my sprint blackberry service that I only use for e-mail.

Who cares about a time.com poll? Bunch of tossers anyway over there. But the idea of the email-only device is exactly how RIM started back in the day, like XenomanX said. Professionals have their corporate Blackberrys, but there are plenty of folks that don’t want to spend $50/month or more, don’t NEED their email on their hip, but would like it if it were cheap and easy enough. Could be a huge market for this.

i like this device. it’s not for me, i enjoy my BB Curve. i need the phone.

i can see how a lot of businesses would benefit from it. i work with people that only use email. i never talk to them on the phone. so this would be great. and they wouldn’t have to pay for voice charges.

once google sets up sms text from your gmail account this is a keeper. especially for some parents. teenagers can text their friends all they want with no worries of overage fees and no voice plan.

my brother has a work phone so he can’t include his teenager on his phone plan so this could be the answer for him. google away for 20 bucks a month.

include wifi and then i could understand the rating.

Most BGR readers don’t need this but it is a great option for someone who doesn’t want to pay $100/mo for a cell phone plan.

People are getting priced out by the ever ascending data plans so this is a breath of fresh air.

I don’t think it is the Gadget of the Yar, but I do find it very tempting. I have a iPhone 3G, a Blackberry Curve, and a Treo 700p.
The Treo is the best device for email. Unfortunately it is too big to carry around.

I don’t like the way BIS works for my email. It is impossible to do Inbox Zero when you have two copies of the message (BIS and IMAP).

So I end up using my iPhone everyday It is a great device (except for the dropped calls), but it sucks for email because it lacks a keyboard.

So, $20/mo is almost worth it.
