Apple is gaining market share and m$ is losing market share. There is a reason for it. The populace is finally becoming computer savvy enough that they can see there is a difference. Even though a Mac costs more, the smart people want quality and will pay for it.

you guys are talkin alot about windows and mac i have just switched to mac, am a med student and i have used a window for years and am computer profession, not just a learner or a jumper here and there, the thing is that windows works right for those who dont use the computer often but if you are computer freak believe me it wont last and you buyin a new one, or you will always be sending it to the company. a mac is good for computer freaks not for people who are just wanting to use a computer. period.

I just got my brand new MacBook Pro yesterday and have noticed that the trackpad does freeze occasionally. I thought that this was just Firefox, but now that I have read this, I believe that it might be a trackpad issue.

Nevertheless, I LOVE my MacBook — and extremely happy to be rid of my Dell that ran Windows. Sorry — windows is just not a very stable product.

I know a ton of people with Macs and none have ever had that issue. That doesn’t mean that the issue isn’t prevalent, nor does it mean that it isn’t prevalent. But they replaced your computer. That’s an important consideration. They make an unbelievable product. You’re being unreasonable if you expect a product to be perfect out of the box. That’s the bottom line. New products always have issues. That’s why they say never to buy the first model year of a new car. Does it mean that the car is bad? No. Machines have problems. You need to be willing to expect that. Nothing is perfect the first time out of the box. The G1 has email issues. Is it a bad phone? No. I’m sure they tested it a ton of times, and just because it happened doesn’t make Google a bad company.

u keep wasting your money on products that offer less than perfect…
When I spend 2200$ on a product (and when its overpriced compared to other computers) I expect it 100% out of the box. NO BURNT PIXELS!
If you cant accept burnt pixels of the box then u go ahead and live with it. I won’t.

Its that simple… You must be very forgiving in life and hopefully one day a product fails for ya and you are “ok with it!”

I said PCs because “Hello World!” made a comment about them, so I was responding to his comment. Maybe you need to read thing a bit more carefully, as that entire post talks about his comments.

Secondly, Marco R, most people don’t recognize burnt pixels. Did Apple replace the computer for you no questions asked? They are a great company for that reason. Machines don’t always function properly. You act like because you had a few problems that they are a terrible company. All I have to say is that people are switching over to Macs in groves for a reason. Look at the poll on Engadget – you would have never seen more Mac fans than Windows fans 5 years ago. Not to mention I have a ton of friends who have had burnt out pixels on all types of computers. Don’t try and make it out to be like Apple is the only company with that issue.

And to the both of you, keep your head buried in the sand. Apple is making huge strides in the computer, mp3, and cell phone industry. They offer one phone and it has sold like hot cakes, iPods are untouchable, and for the first time since 2001 a Mac computer has accounted for a larger portion of their sales than the iPod. That’s progress.

I had Vista on my Dell – no issues.
I had Vista on my Compaq – no issues.

Keep in mind Vista came out and outdated hardware needed to be replaced… Just like on Macs…

That said, I switched to a Mac, I had a gradient on my first iMac 24″, second iMac had a burnt pixel, third iMac had 2 burnt pixels.

Seems Quality Control has gone down hill at Apple. So talk to me when these basic issues will be addressed.

I love both Vista and OS X for different reasons. No product is perfect, but stop saying Mac is amazing… I had more problems with Mac than Windows.

PCs are pieces of hardware made by each individual company(i.e. Dell, HP, Sony, etc.) Too bad your parents are wasting money on your college education because it’s obviously not paying off. Face it. Microsoft makes cheap products, and the people that are forced to defend them are the people that stuck with one. Windows Mobile – the worst smartphone operating system. I used to have a Blackjack 2, and Windows Mobile made me want to kill myself (on a side note, I love my BlackBerry). Windows Vista – so awful that Microsoft had to stop selling XP to prevent people from continuing to buy it and to force people to switch to Vista. The Microsoft Zune – the iPod of 2004. Inferior in every way.

There is a reason why Microsoft had to launch a marketing blitz, and it sticking Windows booths outside of Apple stores. There is a reason why Ballmer had to go to South Korea to convince them to use Windows. Windows gets away with selling their OS to businesses, which accounts for a large majority of their business. The only reason why they gained the support of the business world was because their computers were, and always have been, less expensive. It’s as simple as that.

Fortunately, Apples can run Windows now, so they are the most well-rounded computer on the market.

And another thing, Apple makes strides where other companies don’t. Most PC laptops still have DVD drives that you have to eject before you load the disk. Come on! How hard is it to put a slot-loading drive in a computer. PCs are cheap crap, and it shows. They are constantly playing catch-up. How many PCs have backlit keyboards? How many have a unibody metal enclosure?

It’s the simple things that Apple does that makes them great. For example, the MagSafe adaptor. Something so very simple to do and could end up saving a lot of people a lot of grief. Not to mention, as I’ve previously stated, they have amazing customer service and loyalty.

My computer runs Vista and OS X. Does yours? Ergo, my computer does everything yours can and more. Second, PCs have just as many issues, if not more than Apples. When was the last an Apple computer got recalled because they caught on fire?

Also, how do you explain Apple’s recent gain in market share, especially on college campuses? They are laying the groundwork for the future. Almost all of my friends who started college with PCs now have Apples. That says something.

Finally, these are machines. Things happen. As I previously mentioned, I brought in my 2-month-old MacBook Pro a week ago, and Apple gave me the redesigned MacBook Pro for free because I am a long-time customer. That makes them a great company in my book. So what if some people have a trackpad that won’t click every so often. You act like it will never be fixed.

And Marco R, speaking of things being rushed out, how about Vista. 2 years later and it’s still has a plethora of issues.

Does that excuse them for making defective products? These products, doesn’t matter who the company is… SHOULD test, re-test to ensure that issues do not come about. Especially when you when you pay a premium price for the product. I didn’t expect as many problems with Apple or Ferrari, as I do with RCA and Ford. The price gap to me, means better technology and quality of work.
That said, this isn’t Apple’s first issue… It’s had its fair share for 2008 – more than any other year! That is because they are rushing things out without testing them and leaving the customers to be the BETA testers… IE: iPhone 2.0

That’s a good comparison, except Apple isn’t a Ferrari in terms of performance, only in the price and looks department. High-end PCs still leave it in a dust, for less money. Not to mention that Window is Windows – it can do everything Apple can and a lot of what Apple can’t.

By the way Mr. Karp, I think it’s safe to say that this is a software issue, or more specifically a sensitivity issue. When your thumb covers too large of a surface area, it doesn’t click. When you use less of your thumb, it works perfectly. Nevertheless, this is clearly something that Apple needs to address.

I would say that disaster is a bit too strong of a word. The computer works great aside from this one little issue. At least my computer isn’t catching on fire. It’s a machine. These things happen. When you push the envelope like Apple does, there are bound to be a few bugs here or there. Ferraris have issue too, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they make Mustangs look like motorized wheelchairs.

Not a Mac owner (mostly due to the high price of their equipment) but like any other product, alot of them have issues from the beginning that do not get fully tested and the problem is typically resolved pretty quickly. It’s the bleeding edge effect. It happens with every company, not just Mac.

The list goes on – you get the picture.

Seems 2008 has been a major setback in my eyes for Apple.

yes they have met sales goals… but with the problems mounting… and I have bore witness to them, I refuse to buy any Apple products on launch until 2 to 3 months after launch – so all the issues can be ironed out.

I have experienced this problem on a MacBook Pro that I’ve been using for 3 days. It’s a bit annoying to be honest. It either doesn’t click, or it stops registering movement. Luckily, Apple is an amazing company. The only reason why I have this computer in the first place is because the Apple Store replaced my two-month-old MacBook Pro for the redesigned one simply because the DVD burner wasn’t working and I am a long-time Apple owner. That is why they are an amazing company. As for the person who said that his Dell looks better, he has to be blind. Plastic computers are sooooo 1990.

A shame these aren’t working (at least for some people)- the new Mac trackpad looks like it might finally be large enough to be actually usable… perhaps I could give up my USB mouse and/or rubber nub thingy…

(However, the glossy screen is still a deal-breaker- I’m greatly bothered by the reflections on my current laptop, and it’s a matte screen)
