New Apple Macbooks shipping with faulty trackpads?
If multiple reports across the web are to be believed, the answer might be yes. According to a rather sizeable thread over at the Apple discussion forums, a number of users are experiencing a curious problem that causes the track pad on their new Macbook to freeze up and stop registering clicks after 50 or so successful pushes. The freeze seems to last for 5-10 clicks, after which the button begins functioning again. There has been no official response from Apple, so we can only speculate as to the cause, but according to many of the responses on the forums it seems that tweaking some of the software settings for trackpad sensitivity cause the problem to disappear, at least for a short bit of time. If it is in fact software related, Apple could theorhetically right the issue with a simple firmware update, a much easier task than a full-on hardware recall. Anyone out there experiencing a similar issue on their shiny new laptops?

load up ubuntu or windows a differnt os see if the problem repeatts itseflf then it’s hardware.

problem happend with my new mac book pro… 3 days after i got it.. lock ups. freezes. tried to adjust settings.. so i brought it back. to the “genius bar” they couldnt fix it.. so they replaced it.. so far so good. but well see.
I have had mine for almost 2 weeks and no problems. I use mine for probably 5-6 hrs out of the day with work and still runnin strong
i’ve had my macbook pro since the friday after it came out and i haven’t had any probs so far.
Yeah definitely been having this problem with my mac. Just switched from a pc and wasn’t sure what the problem. Good thing this is a widespread incident, now I am sure they will find a solution.
BTW, quite possibly the best computer I have ever used.
I’ve had absolutely no issues with my trackpad.
No problem here at all.
These software issues can be annoying. For example, every Windows PC since 1985 has shipped with a faulty operating system.
i’ve been experiencing this enough to make it annoying but not enough make me return it.
I’m glad Perspective is able to give his oh-so-valuable perspective on things, as always.

@ Martin – LOL.
My Dell still offers more power (and better design) for 1/2 price. Not to mention it can be used for more than browsing and simple picture editing, unlike Apples. The touchpad, though single-touch, just works.
That’s nothing a software patch can’t fix, Also keep in mind a software update was release the same day these unit’s where ship, so this could be people that haven’t upgraded there unit’s yet. I personally haven’t had a single issue
A shame these aren’t working (at least for some people)- the new Mac trackpad looks like it might finally be large enough to be actually usable… perhaps I could give up my USB mouse and/or rubber nub thingy…
(However, the glossy screen is still a deal-breaker- I’m greatly bothered by the reflections on my current laptop, and it’s a matte screen)
I have experienced this problem on a MacBook Pro that I’ve been using for 3 days. It’s a bit annoying to be honest. It either doesn’t click, or it stops registering movement. Luckily, Apple is an amazing company. The only reason why I have this computer in the first place is because the Apple Store replaced my two-month-old MacBook Pro for the redesigned one simply because the DVD burner wasn’t working and I am a long-time Apple owner. That is why they are an amazing company. As for the person who said that his Dell looks better, he has to be blind. Plastic computers are sooooo 1990.
apple users except faulty products thinking it is still superior… Giving Apple an edge not to fix it because the users don’t care…

Seems 2008 has been a major setback in my eyes for Apple.
yes they have met sales goals… but with the problems mounting… and I have bore witness to them, I refuse to buy any Apple products on launch until 2 to 3 months after launch – so all the issues can be ironed out.

Not a Mac owner (mostly due to the high price of their equipment) but like any other product, alot of them have issues from the beginning that do not get fully tested and the problem is typically resolved pretty quickly. It’s the bleeding edge effect. It happens with every company, not just Mac.
I would say that disaster is a bit too strong of a word. The computer works great aside from this one little issue. At least my computer isn’t catching on fire. It’s a machine. These things happen. When you push the envelope like Apple does, there are bound to be a few bugs here or there. Ferraris have issue too, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they make Mustangs look like motorized wheelchairs.
