The real reason the BlackBerry Storm doesn’t have Wi-Fi or tri-band HSDPA

You might have guessed it, but the reason is Verizon! We confirmed this a little while back with one of our really top-level sources (you know who you are!) and they did, in fact, confirm our suspicions — Verizon said hell to the no, we don’t play that up in here! Now, before the flamewars start, I will publicly say that although it might not be crystal clear, I love Verizon. Personally, Verizon has the best voice and data network in the US. Did you hear that? I lovez me some VZW.

With that out of the way, it’s pretty clear Verizon’s stance with Wi-Fi, but no tri-band HSDPA? We can only assume Verizon thought that with tri-band HSDPA, people would be unlocking these things left and right to use the devices on AT&T and Rogers. That would take out a decent chunk of their data revenue, but at the end of the day, are that many people who now can’t get a 3G Storm but rather a 2G one going to port to Verizon because of it? That remains to be seen, but all Storm first-hand impressions aside, this thing not having Wi-Fi at the very minimum is a major pain in the ass. Does anyone remember the “leaked” Expansys photo that had the Wi-Fi indicator in it? Funny, right? And to the commenters who will start saying, “It’s the best data network, you don’t need Wi-Fi!” You’re dumb, ignorant, and stupid. Plain and simple.

want a game? if you have a device that syncs you should be able to find free stuff, if not so what $8 bucks for a game that you can play forever or even if you upgrade you play if for almost 2 years. Thats better than buying a new game console every 2 years. Want a Ringtone? If you cant figure your way araound this one just ask anyone who’s tried and you’ll find out it’s simple. Want a song? again easiest thing in the world if you buy a phone that’s built for music sync, and if you didn’t why the heck are you complaining about music on your phone when you didn’t buy a music phone? Want to sync your calander? ….has absolutley nothing to do with minutes used….please make some valid claims so that i have something to research instead of just yelling. he who asks is wise, he who is silent is wiser.

He he! This is funny. Paul said he did not carry his Laptop and insetad his iPhone did everything, he even updated web page using iPhone. Paul, were you using Macromedia/Adobe Dreamweaver? Guys, these phones are not computers. Do you know how painful it is to type even 500 words in a touch screen like iPhone or Storm. Or may be Paul’s fingers are like stylus :-)

Try traveling to foreign countries with your phone. The data plan costs will make you want to fly home to send your email or text messages. Wi-Fi would give you the ability to send email from an ever increasing number of free hotspots (such as McDonalds in Cairo Egypt). Sadly I shall be ending my investigation into the Blackberry Storm and purchasing an IPhone because of that issue/requirement.

Verizon is CDMA. Please give us all a break. CDMA in the 21st century is absolutely insane. Where I live, independent dealers are unlocking the Storm and transforming it to what it should be, a GSM device. Needless to say, I wouldn’t ever consider buying one, even a GSM one, because it doesn’t have WiFi.

In Canada, Bell and Telus are both switching to GSM. Inevitably, Verizon will some day.

Would be nice if the damn phone supported wifi so I could connect to my home network. I happen to have really shitty service at my house which is on the other side of a military installation so they have blocks up to stop service for security purposes. Would really help if I was able to browse the internet using my wireless router :)

    1. VZW gives better coverage, that’s not really arguable. If you want to save money then go to a carrier who doesn’t the same coverage. Better coverage = more cost, since it costs more for VZW to maintain that coverage.

    2. That said, VZW has some odd rules and some business practices that, as a more “open” technology proponent, I don’t really care for; however, that’s just the price of doing business with some of the larger companies. Think about all that DRM bullshit going around right now, total nonsense.

    3. The One makes a good point that VZW requires that you sign up for data regardless when you get a blackberry so I’m not sure what the advantage would be for them to shut down Wi-Fi in the blackberries, particularly when they obviously offer it on other phones.

    4. It’s possible that maybe the Wi-Fi (firmware side) hasn’t been properly implemented/tested, if the storm is even physically capable of Wi-Fi to begin with. If it is physically capable of Wi-Fi then it’s possible there might be a firmware update down the road that will enable the Wi-Fi.

I have to say that I have been a blackberry addict for years and was never interested in the iphone because of my loyalty to blackberry. I anticipated that RIM would design a new blackberry that would kill the iphone, but, somebody at RIM needs to be be f@#%$ fired for not having wifi on this stupid storm i bought. Sorry RIM you just lost a customer for being so idiotic in thinking that this phone doesn’t need wifi. Dumb @$$e$ i’m switching to apples iphone, even thier first iphone has wifi.

There are lots of advantages to WiFi….When im on my WiFi network at home I can controll all my media from my iPhone!! You can not do this with Verizon or ATT – you need a WiFi connection!
I can start & stop movies….play any music on my itunes library…controll all my mac computers remotely. Its a pretty sweet set up actually.

Look, it’s stubborn and ridiculous and very Apple-like that Verizon won’t have Wifi, I have wifi on my iphone and guess what I can connect to my local computers at home and work, without wifi you have to use VPN to do this, that’s ridiculous, remember it’s supposed to be a Smart phone not just for internet browsing, it’s not about the speed it’s about the funtionality.

This is an interesting write up. I am with vzw now, and have been for 6 years. I have to say they do like to charge for everything, and disable functions on phones so they can charge. However on the other hand for the area I live in, and I think that’s really the big issue. They are the best hands down. My GF has AT7T, and has no sig. ever. While I have full sig. everywhere I go around here. Again it’s dependent on your are I think, because her home state of MI. she never had issues with sig. Now here is something else to think about, or at least for me. Because vzw is so good/strong in this area everyone for the most part has them. Thus, all my friends, except my GF has vzw. So i get free calls to everyone just about.

Regarding wi-fi. I’ve never found I need wi-fi. I never have issue with the 3g, and even if I did, I doubt I’d have wi-fi access as a back up. I’d like to have it as an option just because, but for me in this area, it’s not really a issue, and I don’t travel much.
