The real reason the BlackBerry Storm doesn’t have Wi-Fi or tri-band HSDPA

You might have guessed it, but the reason is Verizon! We confirmed this a little while back with one of our really top-level sources (you know who you are!) and they did, in fact, confirm our suspicions — Verizon said hell to the no, we don’t play that up in here! Now, before the flamewars start, I will publicly say that although it might not be crystal clear, I love Verizon. Personally, Verizon has the best voice and data network in the US. Did you hear that? I lovez me some VZW.
With that out of the way, it’s pretty clear Verizon’s stance with Wi-Fi, but no tri-band HSDPA? We can only assume Verizon thought that with tri-band HSDPA, people would be unlocking these things left and right to use the devices on AT&T and Rogers. That would take out a decent chunk of their data revenue, but at the end of the day, are that many people who now can’t get a 3G Storm but rather a 2G one going to port to Verizon because of it? That remains to be seen, but all Storm first-hand impressions aside, this thing not having Wi-Fi at the very minimum is a major pain in the ass. Does anyone remember the “leaked” Expansys photo that had the Wi-Fi indicator in it? Funny, right? And to the commenters who will start saying, “It’s the best data network, you don’t need Wi-Fi!” You’re dumb, ignorant, and stupid. Plain and simple.

So it’s at 500 and anything you say after this will be ignored just like your 10 previous posts…it’s thanksgiving man go find a family or a girl to be thankful for. I’m not doing anything for you so move on homie, lol. Because you got exposed for using two identities you now want to start accusing me of the same. We don’t believe you, you need more people, lol. Just as JustMe and bluehorseshoe already concured that you use different identities to make your point, let me know anyone that can say the same about me. Again, I NEVER said I owned a blackberry. Just like the iPhone I said I used it…so unless you have a post where I say I owned one you’re an idiot for calling me a fanboy. You’re the fanboy because you have to own a product to be a fanboy of it. you own an iphone, thus you’re a fanboy. I own a windows mobile phone so if you said I was a fanboy of that it would make more sense. I defended this post becasue I felt BGR was wrong, you felt he was right and direct quotes and evidence prove otherwise. You’re an idiot and I’m thankful this reached 500 so I can ignore your ass forever. Next time you have something to say please make it worthwhile rather than dribbling on with fanboy nonsense. I am in no way a fanboy, especially of a product I’ve never owned. That’s impossible. I simply defended against a wrong post and you cried because I did so. It’s ok next time someone will take another post up to 500 on your ass but this time it ends here. CASE CLOSED.
If you have anything else to say direct it to another post because 500 has been reached and your life can go back to its depressive wall bouncing stage. And oh yea, since it is thanksgiving thank your mom for me for all the massive head she gives me when you’re inside the padded room. She has a lot of knowledge that I then pass on over to you on BGR, lmao. And just like she does to my kids…she should’ve swallowed you as well.
@ Like-To-Spin:
“We don’t believe you” There is more than one then? HAHAHA
I already wiped out all of BlueShits non-sense!
YOU SAID:
“I NEVER said I owned a blackberry. Just like the iPhone”
WOW you are the ultimate FANBOY! Totally a TOOL, you ripped into me for agreeing with the post and defended BB for 140 posts, until I finally EXPOSED you for being a complete and ultimate MORON that never owned either a BB or an iPhone!!!!
YOU BET the CASE IS CLOSED AS I WIPED THE FLOOR WITH YOU AND TOTALLY EXPOSED YOU AS THE PHONEY YOU ARE!
You are the worst sort of FANBOY, one that NEVER even owned the product and attacks freely to the ones who spent their hard earned money calling them stupid, idiots, and loads of other names. WHEN you have bought NOTHING! HAHAHAHAHA
NOT only did you PLAY a tech guy in high school, it is now clear you are STILL in high school!
So NO BB, No iPhone, NEVER on AT&T, and you claimed to be an expert, HAHAHA
So I guess I now know the answer, YOU STILL DO NOT HAVE A BB! After defending something you never used you STILL bought nothing! HAHAHA
Better ignore me as I have exposed your lying ass for all to see. See what happens when you play with adults! Just be thankful, I didn’t repost all the other STUPID things you said without ever owning the device on blogs all over the net. I have a list, let me know and and I WILL post them, FANBOY!
All the readers on BGR can now ignore all your so-called opinions as you never even owned a BB, an iPhone, an iPod, a Mac, Linux or a Nokia! BYE MORON! From the ONE and ONLY Paul!
This one done, NEXT!
BG you need to lock this one down lol lol
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
@ Jay:
Happy Thanksgiving.
Problem is this guy learned nothing from this, he is over on the post on the Storm software problems calling everyone having issues stupid! Even though, he has no Storm, any Blackberry, or iPhone!
I was happy to expose a bully!
9,944 iPhone Apps Now!
9,959 iPhone Apps Now!
9,960 iPhone Apps Now!
Fizz … the Storm DOES have GPS. You can either pay for the Verizon VZ Navigator, or use the built-in Maps GPS function for free.
You guys need to get off your Verizon conspiracy theories. Their coverate is hands-down better than anything else.
Scrodd … I agree. I am rarely in a place where wifi is going to help me, so while slightly disappointed, the lack of wifi doesn’t kill me.
I love my Storm … and my iPhone buddies, after playing with my Storm … they are about to switch.
You people that are bashing the Storm for Verizon supposedly disabling functionality … have you ever used it? I can access the free BB Maps with GPS on my Storm … and I can use it as a tethered modem. Maybe I received one that they forgot to vandalize, but I doubt it.
9,996 iPhone apps just 4 short of 10,000
10,016 iPhone apps! That’s right the iPhone now has over 10K available apps!
10,109 iPhone apps
@Paul
If you are going to list numbers, maybe you should list the important number here… the number of those apps that are actually useful.
Give it up already. You and your multiple personalities have lost multiple arguments. Do you really want to continue making yourself look more and more like an idiot? Just stop now and maybe – just maybe – people will in time forget how ignorant you are and you can get a little bit of your dignity back.
@ JustMe:
Are you the new Like-To-Spin? Sorry you do not seem to like the numbers, but it is a free country.
I suspect that if the Storm had ANY decent apps in numbers you and Like-To-Spin would be touting them all over the place.
I totally wiped the floor and exposed the other two morons on here, are you volunteering to take their place? OR probably you are Like-To-Spin and would like a new name after being EXPOSED as a phony.
He claimed all sorts of stuff about battery life and bugs on iPhones, FANTASTIC use of BB, only to be EXPOSED as a MORON that NEVER OWNED either! He even played an IT moron in high school, and thought that qualified him as an expert without ever touching a BB.
After I wiped the floor with him and he totally lost the argument, he does what all FANBOYS do, he cursed me and RAN AWAY WITH HIS TAIL BETWEEN HIS LEGS! Bad words don’t win points, they just show desperation and lack of facts.
I think you MUST be Like-To-Spin as who else would bother reading these comments on such and old post?
Anyway the numbers now is 10,111 iPhone Apps. You can delude yourself that this does not matter and they are all useless, but I assure you this in not the case. Developers are pushing out more apps than any other platform in history and man many of them are useful innovative apps. Since RIM has only 700 in years (none really for the Storm), where a good portion are useless, this is significant!
10,111 iPhone Apps to ZERO for the Storm! Since the Storm has No WiFi, an easy way to get to the GPS chip, NO Voice and Data at the same time, a NO decent SDK I doubt that the Storm will ever match this. Soon the iPhone will have more third party apps than any other mobile platform!
Maybe you can save your dignity, by just acknowledging the significance of 10,111 iPhone Apps. There is NO chance Like-To-Spin can save his, he was exposed as a phony and I wiped the floor with him without nasty names, just facts. Claiming 10,111 iPhone Apps don’t matter is just not an argument, makes you sound stupid.
@Paul
Lol – end of story.
My theory why Verizon remove wifi from the blackberry storm because without wifi, people would have to stick with Verizon and pay monthy data services for the internet. If the phone have wifi, then people can change carrier noticing that they can surf the internet without the business of Verizon. Aren’t they freaking smart? They’ll make sure that you can’t have internet on the storm without them, besides you can’t use Verizon navigation as GPS on other providers as well…
well i dont care. i pay to have my house filled with wi-fi for my laptop, my mcdonalds, dinkin dees, workplace, just about anywhere has wifi even my school) and verizon i have known had a huge pole stuck up its ass but now i know its an enitre city buss stuck up its ass. no wi-fi is really stupid. they loose maybe 300,000 dollars in peopole using the phone on other companies and stuff. noody cares. in turn. thats advertising for your phone and more people buy it through you so instead of 1/3 people buying internet, you get 3x the people buying the phone in the first place. the phone costs 10x the amount of the internet so they still come out on top. VERIZON YOU CAN SUCK IT. wait nvm they dont deserve it. VERIZON OYU CAN SUCK A MAJOR CHODE
Incorrect. Verizon Wireless offeres a phone or two WITH WiFi… Example? The HTC…
what if u don’t want to pay for a costly mobile web plan and just want to use wifi which is everywhere.
@Peter:
To obtain the BB services you need to pay for the plan. You won’t be able to get push services or use BB Messenger without a BB plan.
Once you have the BB plan wi-fi will work to get your e-mails and such.
Don’t they charge for tethering? They don’t like to carry phones with Wifi for a very simple reason….they sell notebook PC cards and wireless modems..DUH! If you have a phone with WiFi you wouldn’t need their cards, you could just communicate via the WiFi to your phone and use it as a modem, but you can do the same with BT, so I don’t know why they make it an issue. The new Samsung Omnia has both BT and Wifi, that’s why I chose it over the Storm.
That’s why I need Wifi, I live in a desolate area with no broad band, so I use my phone, and 3G network , to surf the net on my hopme computer and laptop by using it as a wireless modem, either by BT pairing or Wifi router.
I’m a Verizon customer.
I was ready to upgrade to the Storm but the lack of WiFi stopped me dead in my tracks.
Want a game. Buy it from verizon
Want a ring tone. Buy it from verizon
Want a song. Buy it from verizon
Want to sync your calendar. Buy some more minutes from verizon.
The words to this song are getting redundant.
Sooner or later other networks performance/coverage will improve to the point where I won’t take it any longer.
Verizon certainly has some phones that have Wifi, the Samsung smart phone is the first to come to mind.
So this is a strange argument. Why would Verizon let one maker have wifi but not the other? seems weird.
Ok people. Let’s look at it this way. What does network coverage come down to? Just that network…. and coverage…. I have a vzw storm. I get full service on phone signal when others have none consistantly and out in the middle of nowhere. I also get better data than others when they cant even make a freakin call. If your phone works great. If it doesnt then stop b!!!!!ng and get vzw already.
