BlackBerry Curve 8900 hands on
What’s that? Thought we were holding out on you? Never! The BlackBerry Curve 8900, also known to the BlackBerry faithful as the BlackBerry Javelin, is the much-awaited BlackBerry Curve replacement. It’s definitely been covered in depth so we won’t bore you and nitpick the handset. Instead, we’ll give you some of our very first impressions and let you decide the next steps.
- The size is awesome — totally small enough to be pocketable, but not too small where sacrifices on the keyboard had to be made.
- Unlike the Bold where some people had trouble hitting the right convenience key since it was too low, on the Curve 8900, it’s located perfectly.
- The screen, as we’re getting accustomed to now with RIM, is flawless! It’s smaller than the Bold as you know, and that’s an even denser, crisper, and sharper display in our books. Really a job well done.
- What about the keyboard? Even better than the first Curve. The keys feel more “fuller” and not hollow like the original 8300 did. They’re also decently spaced, and even after using a Bold for 5 months, the second we picked this up, we were off to the races. Another great execution by RIM.
- It might just be us, but the fake chrome bezel around the 8900 actually seems like it’s more equipped to handle rough usage than the Bold is. We could be wrong, but at first glance it looks like a tougher material or finish. You know how our original Bold fared…

A full review will be wonderful
I was checking the web for posts on the 8900, which I received on Jan 19. I’m an IT pro that manage BB’s for our company provided by T-Mobile.
I activated my 8900 on our BES this weekend and started using it immediately. I replaced my 8820 with it and like it’s pocketable size and keyboard layout. On the down side, I’m a bit disappointed with the fit of the battery cover, which fits a bit loose and flexes when using the device. I’m probably call T-Mobile business care tomorrow to see if this is a known issue. Time will tell how this new model holds up to daily use.
I switched from the pearl to the G1 and I hate it! The G1 is a piece! The only good thing about it is the internet browsing! I have already called t-mobile and ordered the 8900 and told them where they can put the G1!!!
I knew Blackberry could leave t-mobile out like that. I reall wanted the bold so bad i was about to change carriers. 8900 come to momma
is this phone coming to sprint? i really need an up grade for my 8830 i love the damn thing, but i need a change.
PLease do a comparison between the 8330 & 8900 Curves. I got my 8330 in Sept. 2008 and I am so drpressed thay already have an upgrade. It only came out in May/June 2008. Any word if the 8900 will be available through Sprint?
I was told by a t-mobile employee to expect the 8900 mid-February 09
Sprint is coming out with a new Curve too, I believe. I just saw a commercial about a new Blackberry that will have the Nextel push-to-talk (or whatever) type feature.
Oh my gosh please please do an 8900 v. G1 comparison cuz those are the two phones I’m trying to choose from right now.
When is it coming out?
I was using the Curve 8300 before i bought the 8900 curve.
Honestly,i checked out all the phones of BLACKBERRY and finally zeroed in on this one..and am so glad i did that..
The Curve 8300 promised a lot but delivered so little…
The Curve 8900 is an “upgrade” ever which way
a) The Color : So awesome…so much better than the Curve which in one year of usage had a patchy backside…
b) The layout of Content and Clickable links: So much more conveniently accessible.
c) Wifi : The 8300 didnt have it, this one does ! Ofcourse, the 8320 had it …but then…we are comparing with the 8300
d) Can record Videos now !
e) Battery life is almost the same but the add on features do eat into the battery faster
f) Has more options in Instant Messaging services..preloaded.
g) The most awseome difference i found was in using the internet.
The webpages open in the screen size without having to scroll left or right and the Zoom Click is so conveniently in place that if i want to i can Zoom in on the page or straight away click the link..
h) The LOUDSPEAKER mode is very good and pretty louder compared to the 8300..
i) The picture quality is superb for a Business phone..
j) The sound output is much better compared to the 8300 for music. Much louder and clearer.
The Only issue i have is in making a call..
What happens is that when i press space and get to the names i want to call..the number i select to call sometimes does not get dialled..and instead the 1st number in my contact list gets dialled.
This i am talking about the Contacts saved on the Phone..not on my SIM !
This is the only problem i found on the phone and still trying to figure out the whys of it !
And yes ! I think the Blackberry STORM simply kills the concept of a BLACKBERRY Phone !!
Lets face it…the first thing the phone should do is make typing my mails easier !! The touch screen keyboard is a great attempt , but so irritatingly and inaccurate ! It could work with the women , but seriously made me wonder if my fingers were all of a sudden too fat for the keys or what ???
And the bold ….just one thing…the price was high enuff to ignore it !!!
how much is this thingg???
No 3G… A new curve is coming out that does have 3G, but it will lose either WiFi or GPS. Going with what RIM has done before, probably WiFi. The new Curve with 3G is the 9300 A.K.A Gemini.
Just talked to t-mobile and it’s release is tomorrow – Feb. 11th. No pricing on the their website.
Just bought this phone this morning.
$199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.
It’s my first BB, so I have a lot to get used to before I’m raving about it!
The phone is quite the BEAUTY, though!
ditto. g1 versus 8900. t-mobile store clerk told me 8900 is teh stuff and slammed the g1. but 8900 is still edge and not g3. blah, but rep also told me g1 wont connect wi fi trhu my own router [can any1 confirm] but the 8900 will
bah, i need the comparison!! please
I picked up my 8900 from T-Mo as soon as they were selling them on-line and it arrived yesterday via next day air. So far after getting ti loaded and swapped over from my 8120 I have to say that it has far exceeded my anticipation levels. I have already unlocked the various Themes that are preloaded in it as well as loaded the new Slacker Radio on it that works great.
The next few days I will be putting it through it’s paces and working with the new features that I have not had on my last 2 BB devices. I have to say that this is near perfect so far with the GPS, WiFi and 3.2meg camera that allows youto Geotag the images you take…I am a very happy person right now!
T-Mo finally got it right and I’m not upset that I didn’t get a Storm or Bold…
Hoping you can help! I cannot figure out how to assign notification sounds to my emails/texts. I found where to get the ring tones, but it only asks if I want to assign that tone as a ring tone and if I hit ‘yes,’ it only applies to the incoming calls. THANKS!!
I’m a non-tech person thinking about getting the Curve for its PDA uses but not web/multimedia/etc. Someone told me that without paying for data plans on T-mobile, that this should still work on wifi for free. Some other Tmobile folks said that was true of the older Curve but with this one, it won’t work, or will have “limited” internet access.
Anyone low-tech enough to have this phone and NOT have a data plan, and still try to get online with it?
YES YES YES!! A battle between the Javelin and G1 would make my day!!!
I have a g1 (as I am on it now) and I am look ing to buy the 8900 so I think a g1 vs 8900 would be nice
Any word on the release date for Verizon? (Code name Niagara)
I am dying waiting to upgrade… almost went with the 8330 (current curve) but just heard that this is coming to my network!
Hope i don’t have to wait too long…
Thanks
I’d really like to see the 8900 vs. G1, as my G1 has some tech issues, so I asked T-Mo if I could switch, and they said due to the problem with my G1, I could either get another G1, or if I wanted switch to the 8900. So before I go making a mistake I’ll regret for 2 years, I would like to see the two side-by-side.
Thanks…
Ok heres all u need to know. Dont be fooled by the OMG its good but it lacks 3G.
1. i get it, but its still better than any other phone
2. the EDGE isnt alll that bad.
3. It has the BEST SCREEN RESOLUTION i have EVER SEEN.
4. youtube is a little slow, but still works. just give it like 30 seconds
5. movies and games are awesome, but it comes with some john mayer crap lol
Who needs 3G anyway, the onboard wifi is way faster
