BlackBerry Curve 8900 hands on

What’s that? Thought we were holding out on you? Never! The BlackBerry Curve 8900, also known to the BlackBerry faithful as the BlackBerry Javelin, is the much-awaited BlackBerry Curve replacement. It’s definitely been covered in depth so we won’t bore you and nitpick the handset. Instead, we’ll give you some of our very first impressions and let you decide the next steps.

  • The size is awesome — totally small enough to be pocketable, but not too small where sacrifices on the keyboard had to be made.
  • Unlike the Bold where some people had trouble hitting the right convenience key since it was too low, on the Curve 8900, it’s located perfectly.
  • The screen, as we’re getting accustomed to now with RIM, is flawless! It’s smaller than the Bold as you know, and that’s an even denser, crisper, and sharper display in our books. Really a job well done.
  • What about the keyboard? Even better than the first Curve. The keys feel more “fuller” and not hollow like the original 8300 did. They’re also decently spaced, and even after using a Bold for 5 months, the second we picked this up, we were off to the races. Another great execution by RIM.
  • It might just be us, but the fake chrome bezel around the 8900 actually seems like it’s more equipped to handle rough usage than the Bold is. We could be wrong, but at first glance it looks like a tougher material or finish. You know how our original Bold fared…

So, do you guys want a full on review of the BlackBerry Curve 8900, or do you want one of our oh-so-popular battles? Maybe a Curve 8900 vs. G1? Hit us up in the comments and let your voice be heard. Word. Don’t forget to get jiggy with the BGR gallery and check out the pictures!

T-Mobile should be releasing the 8900, within a few days of valentine’s day, on February 18!
    AT&T in Q2 or Q3.

Ok; I’m in the process of updating phones. I’ve been a die-hard *Sidekick* (from Tmobile) fan since day 1; but I’ve grown out of it.

This may seem like a dumb question; but I really truly have no idea and want to invest in a good phone, internet access, email, aim, photos, all that good stuff (my sidekick currently has that, and those are things I definitely want).

I few friends have that google phone (G1) and it seems like a nice phone I haven’t had enough time to play around with one but if “you” (the professional, informative, tech-support genius) would choose between the new Blackberry Curve 8900 and the G1(Google phone) what would you pick? is there any way anyone could respond or email me in regards to comparing the 2?

    Thanks! :)
    ps-Happy New Year Everyone

Ps-I heard the BlackBerry Curve 8900 is being released on February 11th 2009. A Friend of mine works for Tmobile and they told them that’s when it would be released…Who knows. I need to decide what phone is better first … :)

In response, Mari, I had a sidekick 3 when it was released, then a brown LX…I too grew out of my sidekick obsession and got a Blackberry Curve 8320 with T-mobile. I have huuuge fingers (well, not THAT huge), so I thought switching to a smaller keyboard would be difficult, but I actually type better on my Curve than I did on my LX. The G1 intrigues me, but it IS the first model. I would either wait until something like the G2 comes along (whenever that will be), or purchase the Curve 8900 when it comes out. I’m trying to sell the Curve I have now so I can afford the new one when it hits. Give the Curve a chance =D

    Hope this helped, haha.

Got mine on vodafone. Its a really great handset. The keyboard is more defined and easier to type with than the previous curve. Didn’t get on with the storm at all and the bold is too bulky for me. The only thing I’ve found is the video playback doesn’t seem as crisp as the storm. Could just be me though. But very happy with this phone

if you are an IT pro than you only need the blackberry and not the G1. you cannot download the corporate emails and the battery life is too short. thats enough to make the judgement.

I agree with Sam, if you need to get corporate email the G1 is out. I had a 8820 BB and switched over to the G1, MISTAKE. It has connectivity issues and just ends calls often. I live and work in Houston and the coverage should not be an issue but there network is not robust enough and you always have to be calling your party back or ending calls. I am switching back to BB on the sprint network (8350i. I will never leave BB again and go to the top 3 with G3.

For all of you wanting specs and comparisons between the BB 8900 and G1…let me just say that after owning quite a few different phones (T-Mobile), including the Dash, Wing, and BB 8800, I can give you some advice. I work in IT and have to be familiar with different phones and carriers. In my personal opinion, I would choose the BB 8900 hands down over the G1 or any other phone, for that matter. I know it doesn’t have 3G, however, the battery life alone is a done deal for me. I use my phone constantly (texting, IM, MySpace, internet, email, etc…simultaneously) and my BB battery never runs down. I simply charge it each night and I’m good to go. I can’t say the same for ANY Windows Mobile device and I am not experienced with the G1 batter, however, reviewing the SPECS leads me to believe the G1 battery is nothing near the BB. As well, even though the BB does not have 3G, is DOES have Wi-Fi which, with a TMO wi-fi modem, enables you to make free, unlimited calls from home. You can also connect to the internet using wi-fi rather than cell service anywhere you have a wi-fi signal. This is also nice when tethering your laptop, if you use this.

Anyway….just my two cents…hope it helps!

I was just told they are going to bump the 8900 till the end of Feb now. I just left the Tmobile store today.

G1 = bad battery and lacking email ability
Bold = not on Tmobile yet
Curve = outdated with the Bold and Storm out
Curve2 (8900) = great, but 3g would have made it better.
iPhone = with 3g and all the media that BB has, I think still might be a good winner.

(I own none of the above, but used them all for at lease 1 day each.

I agree with old Curve vs. new Curve and also a G1 to Blackberry comparison! I’m also in the market for a new phone from T-Mobile and I’m glad I waited.

Maybe a BlackBerry to T-Mobile Wing comparison?
