BlackBerry Curve 8900 hands on
What’s that? Thought we were holding out on you? Never! The BlackBerry Curve 8900, also known to the BlackBerry faithful as the BlackBerry Javelin, is the much-awaited BlackBerry Curve replacement. It’s definitely been covered in depth so we won’t bore you and nitpick the handset. Instead, we’ll give you some of our very first impressions and let you decide the next steps.
- The size is awesome — totally small enough to be pocketable, but not too small where sacrifices on the keyboard had to be made.
- Unlike the Bold where some people had trouble hitting the right convenience key since it was too low, on the Curve 8900, it’s located perfectly.
- The screen, as we’re getting accustomed to now with RIM, is flawless! It’s smaller than the Bold as you know, and that’s an even denser, crisper, and sharper display in our books. Really a job well done.
- What about the keyboard? Even better than the first Curve. The keys feel more “fuller” and not hollow like the original 8300 did. They’re also decently spaced, and even after using a Bold for 5 months, the second we picked this up, we were off to the races. Another great execution by RIM.
- It might just be us, but the fake chrome bezel around the 8900 actually seems like it’s more equipped to handle rough usage than the Bold is. We could be wrong, but at first glance it looks like a tougher material or finish. You know how our original Bold fared…
So, do you guys want a full on review of the BlackBerry Curve 8900, or do you want one of our oh-so-popular battles? Maybe a Curve 8900 vs. G1? Hit us up in the comments and let your voice be heard. Word. Don’t forget to get jiggy with the BGR gallery and check out the pictures!

Whats the difference between this one and the Bold?!?!?
Awesome, just when you think you are going to buy the Bold. How many of you are going to wait for the 8900 instead of getting the Bold come the 4th of November?
bold vs jav!!!!!!!!!!!
i don’t see the need for a 2G BB on att. with the bold coming soon, and the way att is hemorrhaging 3G phones right now (att quickfire, samsun propel, matrix, even that ugly ass “milky”) it doesn’t make sense to put out a 2G BB. but what do i know, i’m just bangin out a post via the EDGE network on my moto Q and wishin i had 3G and a fuze
So, when can I buy it from my T-Mobile store?
Since the Bold will be out on AT&T on the 11/4…and the 8900 will be a while coming, if AT&T picks it up before T-Mobile…
How about a Bold vs. 8900 Javelin comparison?
That would at least let myself and others make the decision to jump on the Bold, or patiently wait for the 8900.
@Bla1ze
Who took in shit in your coffee this morning. WHy are you so cranky mr tech smarty pants. Maybe other people have real lives and jobs and don’t follow every leaked detail from every site.
That’s why we come to BGR. He hooks us up with whatever we need to know. Not every bullshit detail that you apparently study.
I must have been asleep when you talked about this device before. Specks please and is there any chance that this phone will hit Verizon before 2020??
Thanks always, Katherine
Now I can’t make up my freakin mind – Thanks RIM!!! I was patiently waiting for the Bold until I saw the Javelin and now I’m undecided…From the looks and sounds of it the size is not bad, the keys are perfect, the price would be a little cheaper than the Bold, no 3g doesn’t bother me, but my big question is – would AT&T get this device at some time? I need to have alot of choices and I’m not ready to leave AT&T. I have until February to decide which device I’m going to get so I do hope that the Javelin is available to me at that time at least.
This by far is the best design for both small and big hands (read: fingers). 3G should have been included though ! How about a 8900 vs Velocity 111 – the keypad variety. Whats the price ?
Thanks for the nice clean small review BGR! Looks like a killer phone, wish it was coming CDMA!!!!!
But yes like those have already said, I would like to see it reviewed against the “old” curve.
I really like my Curve, my first BB. I got it for uma with tmo. Now that tmo has rolled out 3g in L.A. where I live and many other cities around the country, I can’t see “upgrading” to another edge phone.
I’ve had trackball problems (I now have a $10.00 ebay spare in the drawer) and I would love the autofocus camera on the javelin, but other than that I don’t see any reason to upgrade until they make a 3g model, which they will eventually.
The Curve form factor is a winner, and I already have one.
I played with the Flip too, and could have been tempted, but it too is not 3g and has the same processor as the Curve. Again, why upgrade?
But if you don’t have a BB, jump on this!
I like the all Blackberry comparison–Bold, Javelin, and Storm. Yes they’re all tailored for different audiences, but it’s still nice to know how they stack up against each other.
I think it’s funny that everyone’s insisting on the 83xx vs. the 8900. Duh the 8900’s gonna be better. Why have to write details about it?!
As for the Nokia comparison, I believe you’re referring to the E71, in which case I think that would be a good review as well.
I love this phone! I just hope there’s a CDMA verison out soon! I know they always last to get anything! Does anyone know if their will be a CDMA Curve8900 or a Bold?
Why G1? i would rather prefer Javelin vs Nokia E71 or E63.
Hmm. Maybe they can try to “not release” this one with ATT as well.
Similar to the Bold that they are successfully “not releasing” for some time now.
I am about to give up and go Apple.
No 3G on this bad boy! This phone is basically just a replacement for the 8300-Curve series. Just as the Bold is replacing the 8800 series. For those saying at&t won’t pick this up, come on at&t picks up just about every new BB. However I don’t see this dropping there till at least Feb/March 2009. Only because they just recently dropped that new Blue Curve with wifi. But who knows these days, at&t still seems to have there fingers up there butts with the release of even the Bold!
@ everyone thats asking about bold/jav battles
google it…thats already been done and the deciding factor is mainly if you want 3G or not
if AT&T dropped a 3G Jav…then they wouldnt need the bold…the Jav is a better handset in numerous aspects…but you could also say to keep it in that small form factor, it wouldnt be around till next year-ish
The Blackberry Bold should be releasing sometime between now and Christmas 2010. This looks like it may be the phone to get.
Full review please.
Come on BGR, lets see a full review already.
blackberry curve 8900 vs nokia e71 review
i was hoping for 3G as well, but after being told that this would be realeased on tmobile, i was dissapointed becuase of course, tmobile = NO 3G. i guess well just have to wait for the at&t 8900 to see if they redesign it a little
I really hope they fix the microphone on this one… My two curves one on sprint and one on verizon pick up WAY too much background noise…
