CompUSA sells Blackberry Bold, and you thought Best Buy was expensive
Just when you thought only a crazy person would pay $679.99 for a Blackberry Bold from Best Buy, CompUSA goes and ups the ante. Now, for the bargain price of $799.99, you can have your very own Unlocked BlackBerry Bold! Guess what? For just another $149.98 you can “protect your investment” (at $800, you might as well consider it a poor investment) by adding an extended service plan. Is this the sign of a weak economy and a weak dollar? How does CompUSA go about pricing a device like this when just a few months ago they were closing up shop and selling all their furniture? Whatever the case may be, according to the site they have units in stock and available to be shipped out today. If there’s anyone who can’t wait the extra few days to score one from Best Buy or AT&T, time to break out that plastic. Anyone else notice that they’re also using a Rogers branded Bold in the image by the way?

Ok, so they make it for $180 and sell it for 800 yeh, that is why this country is going down the tubes. No product should ever sell for more then 15% it’s total cost of production and marketing.

No wonder RIM’s stock is at $41.00 today…Granted, it’s gone down because of the economy, but shit-damn man…With CompUSA and Best Buy money-raping people, it’s reflecting back on RIM along with all the other crap about the Bolds eternal release date.

It is pretty damn expensive, but that is the nature of unlocked and unbranded phones… except it’s usually the phones that aren’t available in the States.
where have you been? CompUSA name/rights/etc etc were bought by TigerDirect. they have even opened some new B&M stores in Florida.
In norway we have lots of phones going for more then 1000$, even with the dollar having becomen alot stronger lately. This is of course without a contract though.

Good point. I forgot they closed their stores here about 2 months ago. Maybe this is a last ditch effort with such a high markup for them to keep any ones that may be open from folding 100%….or are they going to a 100% online sales store?

Hey does anyone know if I am going to be able to buy one of those rubber skins or screen protectors at AT&T when they launch the bold next week.
Just order what u need online now and you will have it by the time att launches it. Also, it will be a ton cheaper than retail at att stores.

Compusa probably imported a few Rogers to sell in their stores. It really doesn’t reflect on RIM as Compusa is not buying them from RIM. I will pick mine up on 11/4 at AT&T retail store.
I think I want a Bold more than anyone as I have been sitting on my Pearl for close to two years and have not upgraded to the Curve. But damn, who in their right mind would pay that? I might pay $50 more for a week or two early but those prices are crazy. Extended service plan with a company that may not last past Christmas? Waste of cash…
@Galvatron: they did, or at least, CompUSA.com was bought by the same company that owns TigerDirect. So, yeah, while the name says “The All New CompUSA.com”, if you follow the link to their site, then change *just* the “compusa” part to “tigerdirect”, you get the same page with different branding, including the same “item number”. The story might as well say “TigerDirect sells Blackberry Bold, and you thought Best Buy was expensive”
Personally, having had one too many issues with TigerDirect and rebates, I refuse to do business with them or any other sister company. Google for TigerDirect and rebate problems, to see people who’ve gone through significantly more hassle and research than I cared to do at the time.
Bye RIM it was nice knowing you, I hate my Blackberry Curve after using an iPhone. With prices like this you make Apple look cheap!
@kingfish: I’ve been sitting on my SK3 for over 2 years, trying to keep it from totally dying (and doing a lousy job of it), instead of going to the Curve or 8820 on AT&T. My wife (then fiancee) doesn’t have my patience, and went with a Curve, taking the ETF from T-Mobile.

Are you kidding me? If they want to charge $800 and people are willing to buy them, then the old saying, “a fool and his money…” comes into play.
They can charge whatever they want to charge and if there are people who are willing to buy it, then good for them. If not, they’ll need to lower their price. It’s called the free market.
The price will be determined by the demand. If demand is high and people are willing to pay whatever price, it will stay high. Look at all the tickle-me Elmos….or the price of the Wii last year during Christmas on eBay. I’m not willing to pay $800 for a phone, but if others are, then it makes sense for a company to try to get as much out of it as they can.
And this isn’t coming from RIM. Yes, it has been estimated to cost RIM $180 to make the Bold. However, RIM isn’t charging this much, it is CompUSA trying to sell it to you.
I’m sure the prices will fall once AT&T gets it so that they will compete. If not, then you can see why CompUSA went out of business.
Well said George, CompUSA and Best Buy has put a price out there, if you are willing to jump that’s your business and your money. We’ve all been patient….. extremely patient… awaiting the AT&T release. Another week will not kill us, and your patience will be rewarded.

its not due to exchange rates. foreign rates care closer than they’ve been in a long time thanks to our failing economy causing other economies to diminish.
Wow but it’s unlocked. People will buy it at this price because it’s unlocked. Sad part is that an unlocked Bold doest work correctly when it comes to browsing using T-mobiles blackberry internet plan. They don’t have the correct service books for that phone.
$800? I’d have to take out a second mortage on one of my houses or have my wife buy this for me for $800.. jeez
This is just getting dumb! at&t & Rim make me sick, and best buy and comp-usa make me even sicker. Amazing how botched this release has been. And now you have these other stores trying to rape the american public of there hard earned $$. To tell you the truth, I might just wait for a the Javelin. The word Bold is beginning to wear on me!
