iPhone 3G is one step closer to being unlocked

The iPhone dev team released a teaser video on Sunday hinting that they are closer than ever to unlocking the iPhone 3G. The video shows a custom application running on the PMB8878 baseband processor. They successfully connected to the baseband, used a custom AT command to launch their baseband application and voila they return a list of all the tasks running on the Nucleus OS. Now that they can inject and execute code in the baseband, full unlocking is right around the corner. Carrier independence here we come!

Except that you still have to sign a 2 year contract before you can walk out the door.

There are places other than AT&T to buy an iPhone 3G if you’re willing to pay the money…

Granted they’ll probably already be unlocked, but financially you’re on the right track.

I’m sure this would be awesome for Europe…but in the US, i can only think of 2 other small UMTS providers with the proper bands, Centennial, and Claro.

You can already purchase an unlocked iPhone.
But certainly, if you want to use it while traveling using another SIM, this would be useful.

Like someone already mentioned, even if it is unlocked, you can’t receive 3G if you go with t-mobile here in the U.S.

You need to close your “object” tag in this article so users on the non-mobile site can see the content (and every article after this one). :)

Reports are already out there that the 3g has been unlocked for bigger carriers such as verizon and sprint. I am a little skeptical but it looks intriguing. Any thoughts??

Im calling BS on this. If it were able to be hacked for Sprint Gizmodo, Engadget and TBG would be all over it. If you link to his unlock site it is bs.
