Google releases Google Earth for iPhone and iPod Touch

Last night, Google added Google Earth to its arsenal of iPhone / iPod Touch-invading apps and all we can say is wow. We imagine 99% of BGR readers have at least played with Google Earth on a computer at some point but for those few who aren’t familiar, it’s an application that lets you look at… The Earth. You know, like satellite view on Google Maps but waaay more intense. The video above is from Google’s release announcement and it goes through a variety of cool functions that are accessible. The movement and zoom are insanely smooth and clear on the iPhone’s display and that tilt feature is pretty sweet as well. Even if it is just a novelty for most, it’s still one of those must-have apps for when people annoy you with, “what’s so cool about the iPhone anyway?” The app is free of course and you can snag it in iTunes by hitting this link (phobos / iTunes link alert) or by searching Google Earth on your device.

The iPhone haters will continue to hate. It’s app like this one that differentiate the iPhone to the others. I just download it and it’s smooth just like the computer version and even better because of the multitouch.
    Thanks Google.

I tried it last night on my Touch, and it’s really shaky. Literally. The view shakes all over the place and at times, the whole “blue marble” slides below the bottom of the screen without me touching anything. I think there may still be a few bugs left to work out.

And apart from being smooth, what useful functionality does it actually offer?

I like how when he went to the Apple App Store that all but one of the apps showing on the screen had to be paid for. Go Android people because apps are free!!

Just used it. It was fun, but don’t see any practical uses for it….and damn they need to update their maps.

You just won’t get the same experience on the G1 because the screen is not multitouch in order to interact with the map.
Also when need to type something, you gotta flip the phone sideways and due to absence of accelerometers, the pictures would stay in portrait mode.

Google is officially letting go of Android. That’s what this move says. What’s next? iPhone exclusive apps from Google?

So with the G1 I will have to touch zoom in or out with one finger instead of pinching. Um, that sounds fine to me.
