Casio busts out with 8.1 MP flip phone

With the latest crop of 8-megapixel phones, one would think they’d become ubiquitous and 2.0, 3.2 and 5 megapixel cell phones will be a thing of the past. Casio has put their Exilim series into a phone with the W63CA (if they plan on sticking around, they really ought to come up with a cooler name). This sharp shooter boasts a 3.1″ OLED display with 480 x 800 pixels - imagine the clarity and vividness of that high-definition screen. That’s right people, Casio has managed to stuff the same resolution as the HTC Touch HD into a display over a half-ince smaller! Of course, the main attraction here is the camera itself with a wide-angle lens, 9-point auto-focus, face detection, anti-shake controls and a video recorder that records VGA video at 30fps onto a microSD card - perfect for YouTube. See it hit Japan in early November and the US, umm, never.

and with a display that flips, it quite literally is a camera that happens to be able to place phone calls.

If something like this would come to the U.S., it would completely negate my need for a compact point and shoot camera for those times a DSLR is just too annoying to carry.

    Wow.. Very nice Casio.

Just curious as to how much that bad boy would cost if hell froze over and it actually came to the good ole US of A.

The reason for the nomenclature on the W63CA and all of KDDI’s lineup is one of efficiency.

Unlike in the US, where Motorola’s marketing school dominates when it comes to phone sales and names, Japanese carriers use a sequential system of numbers and initials to denote the age and manufacturer of the handset, since their turnaround time in measured in quarters, not months or even years as most handsets do in the US.

Because of this, Japanese manufacturers constantly wrestle with each other to evolve designs and featuresets, though this may finally be changing for economic reasons.

The display isn’t THAT amazing, the Xperia X1 has a 3″, 480×800 screen. Very nice, but it’s not like Casio is the only one to “squeeze the Touch HD’s resolution into a screen half an inch smaller”.

This is pretty awesome. I can honestly say this is the only cameraphone that I’d buy. There’s not many handsets that have OLED screens, and this one has an 480 x 800 OLED Display. I just hope it comes to the US, I’d definitely pick one up. Leave it to a camera manufacturer to make an awesome cameraphone.

Agreed. It’s finally a digital camera that happens to do phone calls on the side. Not a fan of flip phones, but this one takes the cake so far.

The FlipShot has an identical form factor, yet no one batted an eyelid over it. There’s also the issue that the assembly in the W63CA is a CMOS+DSP combo and not a true CCD sensor in the vein of the legendary Sharp 903SH. I’m a bit hesitant to make such a big deal over the phone, especially since the selling point is the camera.

I’m not a big camera phone guy, but based on the picture, it looks pretty damn sweet. Casio…wow. Who would have thought?
