T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.
Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…
Thanks, Kyle!

The gmail works good. My cox email stinks. I’ve been to 4 T-Mobile stores to ask how I can empty the garbage email. One person said that is done via my home computer. Not completely correct. I still have emails on my phone I can’t get rid of. Who wants a gig of trash emails on the phone?
Will someone tell me why I can’t log in to my hotmail account? It telling me wrong address or password. Besides that the phone wprks just fine.
I have set my G1 to recieve emails from my AOL account and to check it every 5 min. I don’t recieve any emails unless I open my email account and load more messages its a P.O.S. and it won’t do it on its own.
P.s. This is my second phone b/c my first one was such a lemon they had to send me a new one. This is the only problem with my new one but its a big one.
Was anyone able to access their att.net email from their G1. Its not allowing me. Any ideas?? Any help would be nice.
Thanks
Can any one tell how to add my company email to my G1? I tried pop3 and imap and I keep getting a message that says the setup couldn’t be completed.
I don’t have such a problem with receiving email, just sending. My email gets stuck in my outbox after sending, sometimes for hours, there is no resend or send and receive function so I just have to hope it eventually sends. Can some suggest a better email client for this phone (or program one)
Alright, the E-Mail client works without any connection errors through Wi-Fi, which probably means that it is a T-Mobile network problem. I was one of the first to own a G1, and E-Mail worked perfectly for the first 6 weeks. I’m sure the people at T-Mobile are working on this and will fix it. The Google+HTC+T-Mobile combination is still pretty new, and remember the problems that ATT+Apple had after launching their 3G iPhone? Everyone posting here is an early adopter…and should be prepared for a bumpy road for a while…
Hey everyone,
I’m disappointed with the new G1.
I was xtemely excited upon purchasing it saying to my friend ‘im gonna give this a try, everyones got an iPhone and plus this may have extended its features from testing the iPhone’.
I was wrong,completely.
I want a refund. I paid so I would expect features and apps to work.
Gmail attachment doesn’t work. Bluetooth is useless, can’t connect and send/receive, battery’s always visiting the grave etc.
Let’s all ask for a refund…. I’m not going to spend an 18month contract with a useless phone.
I see a lot of people having the same problem I’m having with the emai…..it’s a the only thing that upset me about this phone…..also was expecting more with the update they did…hopefully they get that fixed
I am not getting my emails at all anymore!!
How do I get this fixed??
I’m having problems with my pop3 emails. Two accounts set up and for some reason, sometimes the inbox shows emails and the next time they don’t! Very annoying! Had it one day and am considering sending it back!
Hi,
I got G1 but still i couldnt get my office email on that and this is really annoying. Does anyone know how to instal SSl certificate on devide?
thanks for sharing this
I have decided that the G1 isn’t a email worthy. I have had the phone since Dec and still to the day the email isn’t working well. You still can’t get more then one hot mail account to work on it. Also POP email don’t work. Even the GMail is really limited on what it will do. I have to admit after the latest update it did improve some but still not where it should be from a company that specializes in email as their primary platform.
Every one accept that the phone is a entertainment phone not for business.
There are way too many glitches with the G1 for TMobile not to have known. I have had my G1 for 4 weeks and I hate it. Can’t send email from my Cox account. Can’t empty trash folder or outbox. Sometimes I can retrieve my emails and sometimes I can’t. Basically, everything the everyone has been saying that is wrong with this seriously flawed phone is true. REFUND! REFUND! REFUND!
i am having a hell of a time setting it up to go to the company’s exchange server, several users of iphone works great for them, but I have the G1 but still can’t get it to sync or find the server. Any pointers would be of great help. I used the defaults for ssl. It shouldn’t be that difficult, and I am going through IMAP.
Thanks
get the App “Touchdown” great push email app for exchange.
can u tell me the setup steps how to to connect from my mail to my G1 phone?
email works fine for me but I don’t use Hotmail like some of these newbs. running POP3 and I leave messages on my server for archiving, so this way I download to the device, read, reply, trash, move on! WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
That’s fine and good if you use a POP option but this isn’t the case for any one using Hotmail. I ask any one to try to get more then one hot mail account to work on the phone. Also try to get your g mail to work correctly. You can’t view email by date of received. Only the oldest to the newest unless you crate a archive folder on via your profile.
You have to ask your self even after almost 5 months after the launch of the phone why people are still trying to figure out how to get their email working.
I have a black berry and the email took 5 min to set up (Yahoo, Hot mail, Exchange Email) I have over 9 email accounts working. Of course that RIM had had time to get the kinks out of the system. We all have to remember that G Mail is a Google product. Even this app is very limited.
So I have just accepted that the phone is just a phone. Email is useless at best. The phone has some good features just not the email app. Believe me I have tried almost all that I can find and just no real options still.
how did you get it fixed?
The G1 is supposed to be the best phone out there, why cant they figure out the GD email. This phone seems useless for business if you cant get email????I have pop3 webmail account, any ideas of how to make it work or get an app for it?
Try to set up an email forwarding instead. this would resolve your concerns abt imap/pop3 set up on ur G1 device. or else, better throw the device out of your window.
In the past week I was able to set up both Hotmail accounts on my G1. Also have 2 Pop based emails working as well. So as I have been critical to say the the phone don’t work. I can say that now I am using it to see and reply to emails.
There are some limitations for the email but its best to quick view email and respond with limited options. Signature must be set up prior to using a specific account.
So at long last I can say the email option that the G1 came with is working sorta. For the most part the issue of downloading email takes some time but it is working. I guess TMobile got their act together and finally got it to work.
I was going to demand my money back from TMobile since it had been over 3 months since I got the phone and this feature wasn’t working. Just the a small margin they have bought more time.
Now for those that ask how I did it? No special software to direct you to. Just the app that came with the phone. I just followed the steps that it asks. No weird situaiton just follow the steps.
Some relief and less a sour feeling when I look at the phone now.
My last phone was WinMo and the phone before it was Blackberry. I switched to the G1 because my WinMo phone was crashing on a regular basis. So far the G1 has worked perfectly. I have 4 email accounts setup + the gmail account and so far, so good.
Since all of the negative feedback seems to be coming from T-Mobile haters and they can not back up their comments I think I will keep it
