T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.
Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…
Thanks, Kyle!

Ok i have to add my two cents to this thread. I am basing my assessment on spending an hour using the device sparingly… in 5 points or less here it goes 1. HTC’s design on this device is possibly the poorest showing they’ve had yet sleek? yes, sturdy feel? yes, stylish? hell no (looks like a bent I-Phone with too many buttons on the face) and opening the battery cover and SD port is cringe inducing 2. There are WAY too many connectivity issues being discussed on the web to date… not a good look updates galore TBA 3. touch screen functionality… way overrated; Ambitions aside the device does not triumph over the i-phone (and im saying this all as a rabid apple fandom detractor) 4. you make a device that is attempting to challenge an apple device and include shitty music management options, you’re killing yourself… flat out 5. the bright side is the “open source” nature of the android platform… if any developers still give a shit it should begin to take shape… BTW I’m still using a Nokia E61 (the beauty of unlocked handsets) nor do i plan to switch from Nokia handsets after having this device in my palm.. E71 come home with me baby
Some of you have it spot on.
It’s NOT an Iphone (which also has its’ serious issues and flaws and much-needed improvements AND on its’ 2nd release)clone.
It’s NOT a BB Storm/Thunder with it’s antiquated DOS-based style of OS and browser-from-hell and plug-in syncing.
It’s NOT like ANY other phone.
It IS a G1 Android 1st release, 1 month old phone that did Many things right from the start and lest we all choose to forget its’ basic concept: free to cheap Personal Customization to make each handset different to YOUR specs and likings. NOT Locked to a corporation’s mandate.
Geez people, it’s one month old and is getting the needed/wanted upgrades we ALL want/need!
By January this Will be the perfect, most personal and customizable phone on the market!
Didn’t any of you nay-sayers read up about it before you bought it?
If you don’t like it then return it and keep your bitching to yourselves! You’re completely selfish and childish because you want the “perfect” phone right away. WAAAAA! keep on crying or grow up!
Agaim, Paul, is this FACT or conjecture?
I don’t care that it’s only 1 month old. AFAIK it could be a day old. Certain things are jut not happenning that should be.
Proper email client is one of them.
And it most certainly IS locked to a corporation, namely Google, who is NOT giving developers direct acces to the hardware, that woudl allow for total and complete customization.
I’ve had read various comments about developers complaining about being forced to do everything through the Java interface, which significantly limits what they can do.
Obviously, you are simply a fan boy, making excuses for something that, quite frankly, was not fully developed for it’s initial rollout.
Ok, wow, Paul Stewart! At least you put your “real” name. Its actually good to publicly voice issues in open source software systems. It help fixes get deployed better.
The device isn’t locked to Google. You or anyone else can create your own custom email client. In short order, you’ll see alternatives. Be patient. This is unusual for a device, because this is a first for the OS and hardware. In a month or two, you’ll wish you’d waited. New cars, electronics, etc. are all the same. Problems the first month, then the fun for the next 6. Ask all the iPhone1, N95-1, N93, Blackberry Storm, and Touch Diamond early users. That Android is open source gives them an advantage. 3 to 6 months from now, this will be history.
I love T-Mobile; however, the G1 has been a huge disappointment. The only email account that works (most of the time) is the G-Mail. Sometimes I get a connectivity error with that. My AT&T email shuts down my entire email setup on the G1 and my AOL email account works perfect with the G1 email set up.
I’m still reading posts from people who are returning their G1’s because they cant sync with their Exchange server. Has anyone tried MailShadowG yet?
@ AJ,
how’s it going, bro?
I’m surprised people don’t think these issues won’t be resolved. Open source solves these issues. Its only been one month. Have ye any patience?
That being said, email is pretty critical for me, too… Hang in their, Android Nation.
One thing i haven’t seen mentioned is the headset support.
my bluetooth headset, which works well with many other devices, works only with calls on the G1, not with other sounds (music, notifications, utube).
the provided usb headset works with music, etc, but can’t be used with a phone call (even though it has a microphone in it).
so what–i’m supposed to wear two headsets!!?!!
shoot, even my decrepit ipaq will let me play music in headset mode–sure it’s not stereo, but at least i don’t have to switch between calling and listening.
i can see the point that the software will get there on the bluetooth, and maybe even the usb headset, but it seems like a pretty bad set of design decisions to me.
i guess the t-mobile attitude (e.g., tech support)–like “that’s the way its supposed to be” is what really set me off and is leading me to send the G1 back. if they had even given a sense that this was something that would be resolved at some point, i might have been more patient.
with this and the imap/certificate problems, tethering issues, etc, it simply isn’t a workable solution for me at this time–and i so much wanted it to be. i like most of what i am seeing with the overall interface, etc., but can’t justify it right now.
i know that many of these things are v1.0 issues, but sometimes they feel like 0.6 issues.
it’s now almost a month since the launch, along with 2 updates and email still sucks.
still connection problems. email setup forced to close. no notifications. it is set up to check every hour and notify when a new email is received. it doesn’t do this. the only time a notification is given is when you go in and manually check email yourself.
and still no exchange support.
VERY VERY disappointed with this so called “smart” phone. not very smart at all. right now it is really just a touch screen phone. everything else on it sucks.
i have seen a lot of people on the web say “it’s a new OS, new phone, etc. what did you expect? it will have kinks, etc.”
for the price i paid, i expect it to work as advertised. they wouldn’t be saying that if it were a new car, etc. i’m not a phone guru, but i purchased the phone with the assumption it would work properly. and it should. they should not have released it if it doesn’t work.
t-mobile over hyped this thing to the max and now can’t deliver what was / is advertised. and come on people, it’s email. it’s been around for years and isn’t difficult to make it work properly.
of course, now i’m stuck with a new 2 year contract and a phone that doesn’t do what t-mobile claims it can do.
but wait they say, open source is the answer to our problems. we’ll see if that will be true or not. what good does it do us if the OS doesn’t work properly to begin with.
and i’ve yet to see an app on the market that is worth getting excited about…
I have Gmail, aol and yahoo account all on my G1 with no problems yet. It did take a lil while to get yahoo going, but still its no blackberry
I just wanted to say I love the g1 and I’ve had an iphone and sidekick and my g1 works perfect and I love it more then both those phones
I have been trying for a couple weeks on my G1 with one IMAP account and one POP account. It will work for a few days but after I get a enough traffic through the account I get a connection failure and it stops working. The Gmail account oddly enough works flawlessly.
I have tried MailShadowG and it works but that is on the main Gmail account. I want my IMAP and POP to work as well.
I configured my email to work with a pop server and an exchange server. I can receive emails just fine using IMap or by forwarding the pop to Gmail. The notifier does not work with the email which I would like, but as others have stated, it is a new phone with fixes on the way.
Probably the most disappointing thing at this point is that the calendar does not appear to sync with IMap. I can see the folders and even specific calendars, but no info.
The G1 is not relable on the email. I have two hotmail accounts and its not working at all with one. I have to admit that the email is really not polished at all.
Note that you really need to clean up your email accounts to avoid the email software from showing your oldest emails first. So forget about browsing your history. I am going to give the phone a few more days or turn it back in. I can’t justify the upgrade and 2 year commitment on a phone that isn’t polished at release.
Considering GMail is working so well. Relying on a wifi connection to get email stincks. You might as well as buy a Net Book, in the loog run its cheaper.
Disappointing at best.
I just go the G1. Yay! what a hunk of shit. cant register the phone without a connection. t-mobile gave me some bs telling me to wait 24 hours for the application to register…. Nope, didnt work. Had it for 3 days and its totally useless.
Had the sidekick plan before the g1 plan for only 19.99. since g1 is down I switched back to my sidekick plan. and theyre charging me 34.00. Fucing Nazi’s.
can someone please tell me how to make the G1 notify you when you get an email??
At this point after 5 days of owning it. I am acepting that the email program just sucks. It don’t work and belive me I have tried most of the apps you can down load as well. Accept that you will need to use either GMAIL for now. The other option is stay with what email option you have. Or use the web option to log in to your email accounts to see email.
Oh also if you have Hot mail from the browser you can scroll the email message window so this is also a limitation.
Sucks even more.
how exactly on your G1 do you add an email address pleaselet me know
the POP3 and IMAP client sucks…now you see a comment about it. I cannot get a reliable POP3 connection to any of my mail services. Don’t know why it works for some and not for others. I have been administering mobile clients for about five years now – from the orginal BlackBerry to the HTC SX66. No problems with those devices on any level of mail connectivity. The G1 doesn’t have that same level email support – and an Exchange Connector should have been one of the developers top priorities. Is Google the next big monopoly? I think so…but I love their products! Just not the G1!!!
I really like the G1 phone, however, I have had some issues with the e-mail set up. At one time the set-up worked fine and I received my e-mail from my business, but after that it would not receive anymore – showed an error on the settings.
I have tried many times to set this account up but only to find it failed again. As for the gmail account, there are no problems at all; It sends, it receives and I am a happy camper.
I wish that T-mobile would provide an upgrade to fix the issues at hand. I thought that at least I would get my company e-mails. I don’t know if T-mobile actually reads these listings, but I would like someone to call me on these issues.
That is just about the just of it. The email program for any sort of POP, or Hot mail email don’t work 100%. Its not reliable at all. I have a black berry so the expectation is really high at this point.
The G1 at this time is a killer entertainment phone but the business side for email is terrible. I can’t even get 2 hot mail accounts working on it.
So at best expect the phone not to do email. I suggest that if your sold on this point take it back. Other wise live with this being a major short coming of the phone.
As always the consumer is the one that suffers to brilliant misleading marketing.
What hype for such a major short coming of a high profile phone.
G1= Good Entertainment phone.
G1= Email deficient at best.
My company uses iMail for our corporate e-mail service. I called T-Mobile, they suggested I do a master reboot (which does nothing, except delete all data stored on the phone), and did not provide an adequate reason why the service didn’t work (IMAP/POP3).
I contacted the provider (Rackspace/iMail), they were more than helpful, however. We finally concluded, the bug is with TM. One of my co-workers uses his Verizon Storm without issue.
It’s odd, outgoing e-mail is deliverable, but incoming never arrives (using POP3). We thought IMAP would work – again, it doesn’t. In fact, IMAP never connects to the incoming server…period.
I want out of my 2 year contract!
I Love my G1
Coming from an ex iphone user
the G1 is much better IMO
and i have Honestly used both
as far as the email is concerned
no problems whatsoever
except pictures arent showing up
but that has nothing to do with the connection
im sure it will be fixed
and plenty of apps are on their way
Bye Bye IPHONE
anyone that doesent like it
is just upset that they didnt buy it
or arent with t-mobile
