T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.
Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…
Thanks, Kyle!

We’ve just launched an interactive G1 simulator and self-help site. It covers step-by-step email setup.

The site will only be open until end of November 2008!
I’m not tech expert like most of you here. But coming from a Blackberry device, I know how the POP/IMAP accounts should be set up and should work. My G1 does not. I’m very frustrated as G1 is very cool in all other aspects. The term “Smartphone” indicates that it should be smart enough to work with average end user. Otherwise they are dead in the water out of the gate. It SHOULDN’T be this complicated to set up few email accounts. It’s the most basic function of a smartphone. I might be returning mine this week as I’m not seeing any official announcements of a fix coming.
pop3 is a challange, deleted emails cannot be taken out of trash they just pop up again and again. T-Mobile’s help desk acted as if they did not know about this problem (very disappointing)but suggested downloading “k9″ available from “Market” which did not solve anything. Email coonectivity is “choppy” and the battery’s charge is insufficient. Other than that is a fine gadget.
Thanks I followed your advice and email is working great.
What is the outbound smtp server that people are using to get there pop email accounts to work?
I’m getting “Connection Error” about 85% of the time when I try to check pop3 mail on my G1. Attachments won’t download at all.
I’ve not tried imap yet, maybe that will work better.
I just tried calling T-Mobile and asked about the connection error, she had me power cycle the phone then told me it’s a known issue and they were working on an update.
I also asked how I empty my trash on the e-mail account and she said there was no way to do that just yet.
I think I’m stuck using only gmail until further notice.
No way to have our MS Exchange Server work with emails. I am thinking of returning the G1. It has worked maybe twice in more than a week. Does anybody have a solution???
everything works great the only problen that i have, its that theres no way that i can sign in in to my hotmail.com and my t-mobile mail….there should be a way..??
Am not able to access my att.net email account on G1 phone yet.
how did you get your email configured? Im tryign to sync a webmail, but it wont work, any suggestions anyone?
THE G1 SUX is a good phone if you dont try and sync ur e mail. I can not get any email othere then the freakin Gmail crap. Connect Failure is all I get
T-mobile G1 is not ready for prime time. It does not handle IMAP to/from my mail server.
My mail server is domino/lotus. I currently use verizon with palm Treo. That works much better with regards to IMAP. Occasionally it too has a problem when there is a lot of mail.
Checking 3 email accounts, Gmail and YAHOO no problem but had the connection errors on my work email. Friend suggested switching fom POP to IMAP, since then no problems and it syncd my folders with that account as well, cool!!!
I can’t reply to messages on my hotmail account, or write new messages. I know this is a Pop issue, but is there any way to sync my hotmail to my gmail, and open my hotmail through it?
And is anyone else having their internet go down multiple times a day, to where they have to keep taking the battery out and restarting it?
I get lots of xls attachments. Do you see any way that I will be able to open xls files or is that a program that will come from open source?
I was VERY excited about this phone and wanted to see past some of its poor interface short comings. But a smart phone without stable email support is unacceptable.
My experience using a pop 3 email account on the G1 is EXTREMELY BUGGY!!!
About 90% of the time i get an email connection server.
Email notification do not work with pop3 accounts – only gmail.
Switching to gmail or forwarding messages to gmail is not an option. When Tmobile and Google claim to support these features they better do so.
When i’m paying good money for a service i expect it to work. PERIOD.
Tmobile and Google better get there act together.
I have little hope left … i hope they can fix these issues and make me a believe in its potential again.
The email app on the G1 is the biggest POS I’ve seen in a long time.
You can’t even selct multiple emails for deleteion, or empty the email trashcan.
Google has done a pisspoor job on the apps that were included with the phone.
They should hire peopel who know what they’re doing.
Just to try it out to see if reall works…YUP! Setup my email in less 1 minute…even a caveman can do it!!!
I’m on my 2nd phone, after Customer Support suggested I try another. At least this one seems to have a longer lasting battery (first would die after just 1-2 hours of light use.)
As for email – I finally gave up. Now I just leave my yahoomail open in the browswer and refresh that periodically. It’s a little slow in opening sometimes, but it’s better than missing immportant emails. This really SUCKS. I totally considered returning it, but am hooked on the touch screen, and the iphone service from AT&T is too pricey to consider an alternative. So, I rationalize that they will HAVE to get it fixed or risk having no customers. And in the meantime, that goodness the browser works.
Can anybody pls say somethimg about the battery, cause that’s my biggest problem it doesn’t last me not even half a day…anyone know?
I just purchased 2 from the T-Mobile store where the sales person said that they had their gmail and hotmail working on the phone just fine. I didn’t do any other checking (my bad).
I can’t get the email option to work … gmail works just fine. However, my business operates on remote email access (quick response). I’m returning the phones to T-Mobile Tuesday … if there isn’t a fix.
I too am coming from a Pearl and then a Curve that I Really like to use, but I also wanted a decent touch smartphone so I went with the G1.
POP doesn’t empty the trash YET(the OTA fix is coming by Dec 1 at the Latest) but IMAP works perfectly. After 3 days I missed my BB, but remembered that it took a good couple of weeks to get used to the new BB OS and layout, so I decided to keep trying. I’m VERY glad I gave it the extra few days. The Android OS is stunning, yes, it’s that great, and the phone is quite intuitive and easy to use. True, HTC DID release the phone a couple of months too soon, but just wait until January 1 when all the OTA upgrades will have addressed the issues such as Camera quality and options, video recording from App store, Touch keyboard from App store and software tweaks to give better battery life, as well as new extended batteries from 3rd party’s which will make the G1 last longer than both the Iphone 3G and the BB Storm EVDO combined. Remember now, ALL high res screens and touch use AND 3G networks do come ata a battery price, though. So if that’s the trade off, so be it. But 6 hours of Constant browsing, gaming texting, IM-ing ain’t bad for the extreme power-user! For most, it will be fine all day and night long with an overnight charge. CONDITION YOUR BATTERY TWICE FIRST OFF!
QUITE impressive for a 1st release and that T-Mo, HTC and Google are 100% committed to make the G1 itself the premier touchscreen on the market. Now THAT’S true support! and they have won over my business hands down. 3 updates in 2 weeks OTA? Good Work!
For those who want to try…DIVE IN…you can always return it! I Guarantee that most who give it more than a couple of days will be both dazzled and delighted they decided to try it! Not only good for business users (I have over 6,000 employees in my company) but it’s just plain FUN, too! And the Pricing !!!
So, go ahead, live life and ENJOY! The G1 Works Just Fine, even Better than I Expected, by FAR!
Paul Stewart, is that all 100% fact, or pure conjecture and wishfull thinking?
I hope you guys realize that the G1 is barely 4 weeks old. And as Paul pointed out, its not perfect, but the open source public complaint/immediate fix system are proving to work well! Already 3 firmware updates in under one month! If you guys aren’t noticing, the device that was “released 2 months early” was released right on time to put the technology in users hands. Its these early users that have helped make Android that much better. Small scale beta testing can never compare to the 700k G1 users reporting multiple errors on various networks and settings, and problems will be fixed faster than via closed testing. This is what open source is about, for you new boots. Congratulations.
To all the haters, think back. How much problems did your Blackberry, iPhone, or WinMo device have at release? How long did it take to get 3 fixes? Imagine when Symbian goes open source… I can only dream. Good job Android!
I don’t care how new the phone is.
The basic apps, like email, simply aren’t up to snuff.
Period.
Instead of wasting resources on novelties like streetview, they should have spent more resources on developing a proper email app which was outsourced to a programmer who worked on it in his spare time.
