T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.

Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,

“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client.  Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”

He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…

Thanks, Kyle!

I’m glad to see that we have some mature people on this blog that see fit to discriminate and criticize a device that they don’t own and use on a regular basis, much less have even had actual face time with.

I think I can speak for the rest of us that we can forgive initial bugs and glitches because we know all the work and toil that goes behind releasing a product in general, much less a feature-packed and complex phone. Nothing is perfect, most especially at release, and no company has ever pulled off a trouble free launch–not Apple, Nokia, RIM, etc. Welcome to the real world.

Did you expect anything different from BGR???? They are all APPLE FANBOYS here…anything they can do to undermine any other product…OTHER than Apple is “Mission Accomplished” for these retreads!

well the design of the phone is great compared to the Iphone. the G1 with that little off set end makes sure your touch screen never touches the ground A.K.A preventing it from getting scratched. Iphone cant do that.

Ooh, BGR does retreading? That’s great news. Why did no one tell me of this before? I have quite a few tires that could be retreaded.

Using multiple email accounts and email is coming fine.

I love how BGR published this article and everyone in the comments is saying that theirs is working just fine.

I hate how biased this site is getting =\

It really sucks, I liked this site.

I’ve had no problems with the connections on IMAP (not tried POP). That said, the email client is LAME. You cannot read/download any attachments. (you can from the default gmail account tho).

The more I use the G1 the less I’m likely to keep it. Too many ‘not yet’s. Plus T-Mo coverage is very spotty in general.

I am fairly new reader of BGR and I am a bit surprised at the negativity directed at this device and the OS. T-Mobile forum? I doubt that the forum represents even 10% of the Android userbase. 95% fail rate… exactly how was that percentage calculated?

I never thought that BGR had a biased view of the OS or device but when you see an article like this, you can’t help but think twice.

Anyone here ever take the plunge on the first generation of ANY technology and not run in to some issues? Aren’t glitches and shortcomings expected when you decide to be the “first on the block”? I personally don’t have a G1 however as soon as a Sprint based Android phone is released, i’m all over it.

    @ Stop-N-Go

No flame here, just the shit – you have no clue what you sayin’ B. Windows OS is (and yes, I quote) “buggy as shit.” Every one of my 3 Blackberrys crashes from time to time – it happens. Don’t even get me started on the iFan, lordy knows it has had it’s share of issues, saying that they were “buggy” would be an understatement. Obviuosly you haven’t spent any time with a G1, if you had, you would at least be able to recognize the potential, and yes, that is the point of Android!

    @andy –
Jesus man, we all know about the lack of the 3.5 headphone jack, and guess what? This mutha sold anyway….. Media player? You’re missing the point, son. It will be developed.

    @dirkgently –
Great quote on the iPhone “theme song,” thanks for showing us how mad-dumb you are…. “Epic Fail?” Hmmm, that must be why I’ve had at least 4 solid offers to buy my G1 during a visit to the local mall.

In closing, I have to agree with a few of the other comments on this post in that it sure appears as though the people who are having the most concerns and complaints with the G1 don’t even own one. That is the textbook, street, and be-all end-all definition of hating. If you really and truly want to hate this device, pony up and buy one, try it for a while, and then talk your shit – until then, leave it alone. My G1 is smooth like butta, son, and it’s only gonna get better as the Android Market grows.

It just comes down to what you need in a phone that’s all. What Kelly did was simply post what people on the T-Mobile forums are reporting. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m not sure if Kelly has used one yet, but as someone who has had one for over a month (the review unit and now my own unit which I pre-ordered and paid for), I can tell you that in MY OPINION, the device is not ready for prime time. It could be a formidable competitor to the two platforms that I feel are in the top spots right now… RIM and Apple. The problem with the G1, is that in it’s current state, like I said in the review, shit is half-assed and not streamlined. The G1 is basically the opposite of the Sidekick and that’s a bad thing. What the Sidekick has going for it was a usability factor and an amazing setup with an always-on back-end server. That same experience wasn’t replicated on the G1. Instead, they went for something which doesn’t give you the fluidity of a great operating system at this point. I’m not sure how anyone can say that this phone is actually usable as a daily driver unless they are not concerned with real email and real IM. The instant messaging is atrocious for anything more than a simple one-off conversation and the email client is second rate. Like I put in the review, Android as a platform has an amazing chance to seriously disrupt the marketplace as a whole, but until the operating system is perfected, no one more than someone replacing their Sidekick and a few daring tech-minded folks are going to want to purchase this. T-Mobile effectively killed the Sidekick with the G1 in my opinion, yet they replaced it with something that is half-baked. If anyone has switched from a BlackBerry or iPhone to the G1 and is glad they made the switch, please hit us up in the comments. I’d be extremely interested to see your take on how the G1 is treating you. My guess is that you’re regretting switching and have already switched back. Again, my personal opinion, but I think the review we did was spot on for 99% of the public.

My email works fine, only issue I have is I have to delete emails from trash on main account or they reappear on the device. Minor inconvenience at best, other than that it is fine

The idea of the G! was a basic phone that the market place gave the functionality to! If you don’t like it fine, just go away and disappear! 95% of the phones are being used by people that get! Obviously you DON’T

Okay, I know I look like a loser who has nothing better to do than sit at the computer on a nice day, but here’s my last comment on this:

“If anyone has switched from a BlackBerry or iPhone to the G1 and is glad they made the switch, please hit us up in the comments. I’d be extremely interested to see your take on how the G1 is treating you”

I think that it would be an out-an-out lie to say that I am “glad” that I went from my 8320 to my G1; However, I can say that I am excited about it, even 5 days into using it. I am not having the email problems described, but that does not mean that they don’t exist – they just don’t exist for me. I am not too big into the “IM” thing, so that’s not too important for me. I agree that the OS could be better streamlined, and the locking screen is a pain in the ass. All this aside, it has treated me quite well. Call quality is amazing, the browsing experience beats my Curve hands-down, and quite frankly, the novelty factor is pretty cool (the employees at the local TMO stores are actually the biggest haters, they couldn’t pre-order?); I DO miss hearing my trusty BB chirp at me to let me know my email is there so I don’t HAVE to go after it. Most telling, I guess, would be this morning when I left the house, I instictively grabbed what is now my Wife’s Curve instead of the G1 – not sure what this says, but there it is. So, in closing, my plan is as follows – I am keeping my G1 for the browser and what I feel is the potential in the platform, and I will be switching my TMO @ Home service over to another BB (probably Bold when it’s out) and rock 2 handhelds. I know, that misses the point, but there it is…..

I ordered my G1 on wednesday night and had it on the network at noon the next day. I put my iPhone on CraigsList on friday night and I am glad…happy…thrilled to get rid of that dead end piece of shit.
The iPhone has no life as long as Apple keeps ruling with an iron fist. There cannot be innovation with a closed platform. The only innovation the iPhone has is what Steve Jobs decides to put into the firmware. It’s been nearly 18 months since it was first released and they still havn’t got copy’n'paste. And as for enterprise support, coporate users had to wait a year for Apple to give it to them.
The G1 was never intended to be perfect when it was released because it doesn’t need to be. Infact I dare you, I challange you to find one Google engineer who thinks Android is perfect in its current 1.0 release.
The whole idea behind open sourcing Android is to let the world shape it’s future, not some Hitler wannabe who thinks turning down someones creation because it “duplicates the functionality of a similar application”. Give me a fuckin break.
Within 5 hours of the Android code being released, 5 patches had already been submitted to Google. Now THAT is innovation.
As for my G1, I am totally satisfied that I switched from my iPhone. I am a computer guy who has been using Linux and open source software for years so I understand what Google has done and what they want to achieve. Android is not perfect, but buggy? I don’t think so. Windoz 95, windoz 98, windoz 98SE, windowz ME, windowz XP and windoz vista are buggy.
My G1 has been completly flawless since I turned it on and I am sooo glad I switched.
    Just my 3 cents.

WinMo – the STD laden junkie whore taking it in all holes in an alley.
iPhail – the hot co-ed who can’t even give a decent handjob.
BB – the MILF who can do everything, but passes out now & then.
Symbian – the attractive but average looking chick who owns Victora’s Secret entire catalog. If only you knew…
Android – the under-developed highschooler who just lost her cherry & still has a lot of learning to do, but could very well be THE girl everyone wants when she’s in college.

Think that covers it. Let me know if I missed any.

The biggest problem beyond the actual downtime event is that we have to rely on blogs like this to find out what’s happening with the service. I have some thoughts (http://www.transparentuptime.com/2008/10/google-g1s-email-service-is-down-but.html) on how T-Mobile in this case could actually use these kinds of opportunities to create trust from its customers.

    I came from a Sidekick.

In fact I’ve used a Sidekick 2, 3, and LX.

I’ve owned a Blackberry Curve and an iPhone 3G

I love my G1. I think the review that BG gave it is pretty biased.

It’s got quirks, just like every phone has. The sidekick was by no means perfect and neither was the iPhone or the Blackberry.

I think what happened is that the phone had overblown expectations and it was finally released and everyone looked at it as a let down.

I still think that this site is pretty biased toward it’s reviews and articles. It makes sense, it’s hard not to be biased.

But it’s disappointing to see that this article is still here, still with the same headline and I really don’t see any comments saying that the IMAP or POP3 client sucks.

What’s happening is a random consumer is seeing that headline, not bothering to read the comments, and is going around saying “yeah the G1 sucks it doesn’t do IMAP well” which we know isn’t true.

So I’d really say that you guys need to do your research before posting stuff like that.

    Propaganda on the phone scale.

    Disappointing.
