T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.
Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…
Thanks, Kyle!

works for me
I have IMAP setup on my G1 for my work email and it’s worked great.
I’m getting all my emails and sending works fine as well.
I also have a not insignificant amount of mail in my mailbox. 6+ Gigs worth.
Running (3) email accounts on my G1 and so far so good. SBCglobal (yahoo), gmail, and work account Imap (wish I could sync via exchange) but all are working well.
The G-1 is another half-assed device thrown at Blackberry & Apple, plain and simple.
Mine works fine, get everything from all my Comcast boxes. Again, not an insignificant amount between all 3 addresses.
Sent from my hot-fire G1 (that’s right, a G1 on TMO and I really like it) Hard for the fanboys, ahem, fanGIRL to accept but it’s true, I have one and like it.
I am using imap on my G1 without any issues at all. But I am using Google Apps to host my own domain email. I receive around 100 emails per day and my G1 has been flawless.
The only trouble I had was getting it configured but apart from that it’s all good.
amen. the g1 could have been ‘the phone’.
They didnt rush the phone to the market which doesnt explain the basic things this phone is missing.
Perhaps some company that cares more about its users then profit will make an android phone that is user friendly. ie: 3.5mm headphone jack, bluetooth file sharing, media player, pop/push mail that works.
YESSSS!!! Epic Fail! Now we can all finally agree about how much T-Mobile sucks and why the G1 should never have been made! Fanboys unite! Everybody now:
“Music is my boyfriend
Music is my girlfriend
Music is my dead end
Music is my imaginary friend…
…Music is my kingsize bed
Music is where I meet my friends
Music is my hot, hot bath
Music is my hot, hot sex”
Stop-N-Go and dirkgently, eat a dick. No one cares about your opinion.
um dang the negativity is not from g1 users….
My g1 is working awesome, multiple pop3’s working fine, no resetting needed. not feelin’ the flop feelin’ the love, G1 LOVE THAT IS!
I have a g1 with email setup which works fine the only setting i did change was how often it checks my mailboxes.. G1 is good so far i love it!!!!
Truth hurts don’t it John. And don’t be mad at me I’m the reason your wife had to write a “Dear John” letter.
The G-1 lacks some basic features all smartphones have. The OS is buggy as shit, and hell the email doesn’t even work properly. And you wanna be mad at me cause I speak the truth. Grow up a little son.
have a g1 and have yet to have these problems, but its funny how this site is so eager to write this phone of as an epic fail, kiss ass
It’s so easy a Mex-I-Can do it (Not affiliated with Geico). I’m the real “Boy Genius” if nobody can sync their POP or IMAP server with Gmail. You gotta have access to your servers POP port and SMTP port by doing a lil research and add it to the “email” app. AND, follow their rules.
I figured it out after 10 minutes of trial and error. Don’t disrespect G1 without doing a little homework about your email provider. Sync to your Gmail account and still have access to your other email.
Better to do it on a computer or laptop. I even did it on my MACbook Pro! Whoa!
All fanboyism aside. The G1 is pretty underwhelming. Fortunately what it lacks in software will be made up for by its open-source nature. The hardware, well it’s pretty much ugly. It shouldn’t take away from the fact that after the software is properly modified it could possibly be a pretty badass phone. Either way it’s always good to have a pretty serious competitor in the market, it will spur on innovation with all manufacturers.
Funny part is every G1 user posted that the phones great and everyone without the G1 seems to post negative things about it.
Apple must have given out Free Hateraide Coupons to try and stop the G1 revolution.
Viva revolution !!
and boy genius its sad to see your true colors on the G1 guess its hard to like when at&t pays your bills
Stop-N-Go
your whining about a phone and network you don’t seem to use??? try it you may actually like it, complain about it being buggy?? obviously you have not been using a data device.. WinMo devices are the buggiest devices made, the moto q series flat out sux in four directions at once, althought the Blackberry is a very stable data device on any carrier..
don’t throw the hate if you are just judging on peoples words, put it in your own hands and use it, it was not a first touch first love deal i used it for a couple days and fell for the device, i’m in a 2g market 3g won’t hit erea for another couple weeks and it is a great device on edge can’t wait to open it up an gun it on3g
yeah stop-n-go have you even tried the G1 or seen it in person?? if not then please shut the fuck up. if so then i will get back when u respond.
my g1 pop email works great as well.
I used my brother’s G1 for a couple days (swapped him for my 8310) and I have to agree with the “underwhelmed” crowd. It *could* have been super-badass, but it just lacks in a lot of little ways and a couple big ones.
But, the upshot is, with the open nature of Android and HTC’s membership in the OHA, we can expect software issues to be rectified soon and hardware issues to be corrected in further iterations of the device. HTC has a track record of amazing phones, so I don’t think we’ll be sitting on low-end smartphones with buggy, feature-incomplete OSes for very long.
I’m batting 50% here. One of mine (university-based Gmail) works great via IMAP (not as my standard Gmail tied to the handset). My other former university’s IMAP won’t recognize my login, and I’m 100% sure all settings are correct. No biggie for me as my current two addresses work great. BTW, using my university-Gmail via IMAP, I have access to all network folders natively, especially the valuable (for me) “All Mail”. I figure the issue I have with the other may be based upon the server setting on the other end, as hey were occasionally problematic on my Dash, too. YMMV
IMAP/POP3 works just fine for me, although, I have spotty 3G, but I’ll forgive T-Mobile just for a few more months at best. Other than that the G1 support, customer service and the device itself are all top-notch. I have called in with some initial issues related to placing calls, etc, but those were resolved by the tech in-store.
Not sure by what standards are you calling it ugly? Before the iPhone popped around, everything else was hot, so I do not see its usability for its shell, which is quite rugged and works well for what it is supposed to do.
, etc) and the notification subsystem which beats the iPhone hands down.
This phone is clearly not for the masses just yet and that is one thing I will agree upon because some smaller and large quirks still need to be ironed out, much like the iPhone did in its infancy, so hate less and agree on credit where its due.
Android flat out kill iPhone on two levels, Messaging Integration (IM/SMS/MMS/Geo-tagged pictures
Multimedia leaves much to be desired for, but I’m already working on a solution myself, and so are other open source developers. Thankfully, unlike Apple, Google n OHA didn’t lock our souls away to their own choices.
I didn’t even bother with the non-gmail client. I just set my gmail account to pick up my pop3 email… that way, it’s pushed to me and I can use a single email client on the G1. I can assign a distinct label to each account so I know where it came from… and sending can be done from any account too.
Very happy with my G1 so far.
Have to add to what Cracka said, the push-gmail functionality is fast and works very well. Heck I am not bugged down with large sized attachment (doc, ppt, xls, etc) like I had when using the iPhone. However, I am interested in finding out about these users who are experiencing the email issues, could be just that most of us here have not even hit that snag, or possibly, it might be with certain mail servers – who knows at this point.
works like a charm. using multiple imap and pop accounts. 95% fail rate seems awfully high. Slight exaggeration much?
