T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.
Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1’s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…
Thanks, Kyle!

I almost never get an email unless I open my email and hit refresh, yes I’ve checked my sync settings. What I hate most is the inability to add any attatchments other than pictures and the fact that 75% of the attatchments I receive are not veiwable on my device. I fucking hate the email on this phone, its shit. Blackberry kicks its ass. Is anyone adressing these issues? Am I the only one who is bothered by the attatchment issues?
I dont know if this will help anyone else, but I could not get the connection settings correct to bring in virgin.net mail, all I got was connection errors, i solved it by simply setting incomming server manualy, and when it got stuck on the next stage for outgoing server I inputted my user name and password but then unchecked the box that instructs it to be used, the setup then completed and I now have perfect connections and get my mail.
I have a G-1
moderator,
my misfired post went through quickly, but the full post still hasn’t. Did you get it? or don’t you allow links, or something?
I am a net admin and I agree with the state of this software. Both imap and pop fail to consistenly receive and send email. Very frustrating. I end up having to create a new gmail account for each work account and “piggybacking” off that.
Guys, seriously, has anyone gone to the Market and searched for EMAIL? There is a GREAT email app on there called K9. It’s been available for months now, and is still in active development.
As christaexport said back in November, this is an OPEN SOURCE project and some enterprising coders will fix it. Well guess what? K9 is a modified version of the stock (crappy) email app. Try to get Apple to let anyone access their code.
It works very well, for both IMAP and POP accounts, and adds tons of new features.
And honestly, in today’s software market, most software is released as final when it should be beta, and we the consumer are expected to cope with it during an endless stream of updates and bugfixes. Better get used to it guys.
I get all my emais the problem is the counter keeps going up the number grow by the day I delete the emals but the numbers go up I can not reset the counter can you help me out . I sent it in to htc they replaced the maim board sent it back it is still doing the same thing can anyone help me please thank you. Terry
The email app the phone comes with has issues. I spoke to TMobile GI specialist and they have no clue how to fix it. The work around is to not delete the emails from the phone. If you do once they are in the trash you cant get rid of them. The only way is to delete your account on the phone and reset it up. Which sucks beyond belief.
ryannosaurus.rexx was correct on using K-9, I re downloaded the latest app and it works good for Hot mail and POP accounts. Also you have the option to delete the email on the phone only or also off the server. Which is a great option.
Only flaw is that not all email attachments are possible to open, but its a far cry from where the phone was 3 months ago. A few more updates and I’m sure it will be as good or almost as good as the black berry. I hope getting tired of carrying two phones.
i have a g1 with hotmail Gmail and ymail and all is working fine if you now what youre doing the phone is a superb piece of kit and it will get better
Not sure what you guys are doing but I DO NOT have any issues with POP3 or IMAP emails for Exchange Sync I use Touchdown awesome it’s worth to buy it on the G1 Market. support it’s really Superb.
G1 it’s the best phone I ever have besides my Treo’s 650 & 700w, BlackBerry 8900, HTC Tilt I have a huge list of brands and models I’d used
I have had a G1 since Oct08 and since the last 2 updates from T-mobile UK, my BTInternet and Hotmail email accounts have gone tits up. Constant connection errors, blank emails with only time stamps on them and constantly increasing number of unread emails, even though they have been read.
Along with this it locks out the touchscreen and keypad, really annoying when trying to end a call. Only route is to dis-connect battery.
Before touch screen keypad update, this phone was spot on. Since the updates, an open window on a 5th floor looks reaaly tempting.
Until recently I thought it was working, but it wasn’t. Basically I can receive e-mail just fine on my G1, but I cannot send e-mail. It gets moved to the sent folder, and if I attempt to delete it, at THAT point it sends it, but it doesn’t actually delete the e-mail from the sent folder.
I realized this when I tried to empty the sent folder of my pop3 account from my G1 and e-mails several months old were finally sent out to people, and of course they made no sense at all. Then I noticed later that those same e-mails that I had deleted showed up again in the sent folder.
I am no longer using this phone feature. Now I use the web interfaces for my various e-mail accounts. Not great…not horrid.
Just got a G1 for myself. Used BB 8320 Curve for a year before that. Very dissatisfied with G1 for the only reason that pop email does not work at all. On my old BlackBerry I used to receive emails from yahoo, hotmail, and gmail accounts right away, live time, as they arrive. On G1, however, I have to set up how frequent my phone will check my email, with 5 minutes as the most frequent. Whenever I read or delete a message, G1 does not sync it with my account as my old BB did. Also takes forever to send emails. Although, these difficulties were only noticed on yahoo and hotmail accounts. NOT gmail, of course… My conclusion: trash G1 or freakin’ improve the system so that it’s at least as convenient/efficient as BlackBerry.
G1 owner since last Fall when T-Mobile made available. Email has never worked on my phone except for Google’s version, and the much touted “Synching” is seriously flawed on that. I have literally spent frustrating hours trying to set-up work and personal accounts, to no avail.. tech support is quickly reachable but unable to help… and the constant advice to “Power off and remove battery” is damnably annoying to point of “5th Floors” temptation ~ toss it… I will look up K(, thanks for the positive words on options from users who do more than whine here
Email works fine (for the most part). A few “null” emails but very few. My issue is deleting emails. When I delete from my “trash” folder … they get moved to … my “trash” folder. How does one go about clearing out this folder?
Had a G1 for over 6 months and sync gmail, yahoo and btmail without any probs. Question: How do you reply to a non-gmail email without it showing as coming from the G1 gmail account? Answers on a postcard…. The best thing would be a for an all bells and whistles email app upgrade. Thanks, Gman
I too set up my gmail account to pick up my pop3 email. My receiving emails is good, sending hasn’t ever worked for me yet and things in my trash don’t stay “deleted”. I get connection error and all the emails I deleted from my trash folder, come back. Support team said “try deleing my email account & re adding it”.
hey all!
i have a g1 and its blocked/locked or w/e and it keeps asking me for an email+password, however i cant remember it..
ive created a new email and password and it still does nothing so i have no other options..
any help please?!
G1 killahhh!
Only had the G1 for 1 week and I am please to announce that I have successfull received 1 email. Not only that but I have had the pleasure to spend a minimum of 45 minutes on line with 3 different members of t-mo tech support to find out that I have found out nothing (get it?). I was reluctant to purchase the G1 because i was concerned about the email aspect not being the greatest for external accounts but saw a buddy receiveing yahoo mail as if yahoo was the only mail provider. Sad to say i turned down a Iphone to purchase the G1 for 1 email. Oh did i mention that i spent a minimum of 45 minutes on the phone with 3 different reps and that is 45 minutes each?
I agree.
I recenly got a G1 and while its a great piece of kit I cant get my emails to set uo. I got the googlemail fine but not my POP3 account.
I just get the words ‘Checking incoming server settings’ and the animated progress bar
//////////////////////////////////////
Shoot, at least many of y’all can set up your POP3 account. Mine keeps saying that it can’t finish setting anything up.
Major fail. It’s disappointing. Sometimes the emails come through, but I would say more than half the time, they don’t come through. I try to delete email messages and they stay. I have another email address I’ve been trying to set up and it wont let me at all. It says it can’t connect with the server.
TMobile needs to get working on this……
I recieve email fine, but can NOT send it, except to myself, or my provider. Anyone else, it stays in the out box! It worked fine for first three months, then it gave up sending
