T-Mobile Blackberry Curve gets 4.5 update… oh yeah!
It’s been a long time comin’ but it’s finally here: Your Curve 8320 on T-Mobile can now have its OS updated via T-Mobile’s website. W00t! For a device that is supposed to be an “email powerhouse,” it’s amazing that it has lacked html support for so long. Well, now it can finally start living up to its reputation for being an email sanctuary with this new update. Other key features include:
- Video recording and HTML e-mail formatting
- Attachment download and editing
- myFaves 1.5 (NO idea what this is)
- Enhancements and stability improvements to Wireless Network interaction, UMA, Messaging, Media Player, Web Browser, Phone application, Bluetooth Technology, and more.
- GSM/Edge Toggle
So, if you TMO users were feeling a little jilted with the lack of Bold coming or still waiting for the Curve 8900, your phone may feel a little better or at least refreshed with this sweet new update.

I just installed 4.5.0.81 (beta) on my AT&T Curve 8310. It’s much, much quicker than the .69 build and the upgrading was smooth like butta. I’m guessing AT&T is going to release a higher build version whenever they decide to release it…I think BGR had posted October 26th, 2008 was the day for the AT&T Blackberry OS 4.5 Upgrade.
Man, this is a overhauled for the 8320. Browser, email, can view microsoft office files like word, powerpoint and excel. thats all i tried so far. it does video recording which aint bad. all the messengers are new, but they been out already for download. aim right now is working my nerves b/c its not connecting. UMA is way better, no drop signal no more from my wifi. a whole lot to type but gotta go to work now, will type the rest and hope it helps out.
I tried updated my Blackberry and now my BlackBerry is blank and just has an error, I have NO clue what to do!
Someone help.
upgrading is easy, go to http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade and download the desktop manager if you do not have it downloaded already, then after it is installed (or if you already have it installed) go back the same sight and download the handheld software. after that is downloaded and installed it will ask if you want to open the dtm. check yes. when dtm opens hook uyp your bb, if dtm sees your bb it will present you with the available upgrade, select upgrade now and continue to click next till it starts upgrading. if it does not see your device go to options and connection settings and select usb. it will then see your device. if it does not show you available upgrades but does see your device go to help>about desktop manager> device software tab and see if the software is installed. if not go back up to the top of these instructions to the site and redownload and install the handheld software. its rediculously simple and unlike winmo does not delete all your info.
Love the new os the really is the ultimate phone now I was gng 2 vzw but I think imma stick around .I’m in luv all over again
@ ricky.
go to help>about desktop manager> device software and make sure you have the software installed on the computer (it will say something like 4.5.xxx for the 8320 series handset) if it is then try having your device hooked up to your computer (it most likely will not show connected) and double click on the application load wizard, if it detects your device on the connection selection window then just click next till it starts updating and do not what so ever remove your device or battery or power down the computer till it says complete. if the cennection selection does not see your device close application loader, remove your device, remove the battery frm the device, reconnect it, and reopen app laoder, it will then see your device and click next till it starts updating, as soon as the update hits the “waiting for device initialization” phase re install the battery while it is connected to the computer. if that fails call t-mobz and they will xfer you to RIM for thew tools for Java loader.

No, you are wrong. 4.5 for the 8320 will work on ANY 8320 BB, as long as you remove the vendor.xml file prior to the upgrade. I upgraded my AT&T 8310 months ago with some European’s vendor’s 4.5 release. They are all the same.
ah. well ya learn something new. i work in tech care so doing things like that were deffinatly not in the training. Sorry about the bad info then

and my 8GB SDhC card works!
@spoggle Nice! That’s an unexpected surprise.
A word of wisdom to all that are upgrading. There are certain themes that won’t run on 4.5 (surreal for one) and will brick your phone upon updating. Make sure you switch back to a generic theme before updating.
Trust me, I learned the hard way.
Okay so i did the update last night and my phone has been running slightly faster. After backing up and deleting my phone it bricked it while initializing the new install. This can happen to any blackberry but you just have to run the installer again. Just make a backup file first.
But i think anyone that’s done a few updates knows it can brick at any time
Also…@ the first commentor. T-mobile has the highest blackberry attatch rate per customer. Way to do the research
I got it and installed it last nite! Its great! Now i can watch youtube on my BB after the they added video support! Nice update so far! Love T-mobile too!
@wellington armelin
Did you get it before the summer or like before the summer? I bet you sound real like smart when you speak.
Upgraded last night. HTML email “formatting” is such a tease. Would have liked full HTML emails. Still cannot view images within email. I know it would slow down email reading as far as downloading the images, but it would be a nice option to have.
@Kevo
I haven’t received any emails with images in them since this update, but I had been using 4.5.0.43 (or summat, was in the .4x or .5x area) and I just had to retrieve the images when I opened the email. I can’t see why this function would have been removed either.
And to everyone having install issues with it bricking the berry, just restart the install if it bricks you, it’ll pick up where it left off. Took me about an hour and a half to update, had to run it thrice before it would actually work. Not much of an improvement over the version of the OS I was using, but hey, it no longer gives me confusing terms like CS and PS for my preferred network options. =)
Supports up to 16 g micosd now.
FiNALLY! I’ve been too wary to install the others and wanted to wait for Tmobile to get with the program. I can’t wait to finally install. Because my laptop is out of order is it possible to do this via my blackberry? Or will I have to wait now to get my laptop back on trach?
@shontae
You’ll have to have a PC available. OTA wont work because the old OS has to be completely deleted from the phone and then the new one installed. It’s basically like doing a format on your computer. Sorry =(. See if one of your friends will let you borrow their laptop or use their desktop for a bit so you can upgrade.
Even though the video support and rtsp is cool and all, why do videos only play on like a fourth of the screen , thewy are so tiney, before I upgraded when I downloaded videos from vuclip they used the whole screen, this is a bummer

Although I’m pleased with the upgrades that have come with the update, my battery life has been crap. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
@ Chelle
Do you have another battery to try to make sure ur battery isn’t bad. I never any trouble with the update.
I did the upgrade a few days ago and it is great.
My only complain is that it has slowed down a little bit. When i back out from the IM folder to the main folder, it takes about 3 seconds to go. It used to be instantly.
Docs to Go is great, free version lets you edit MS document. Thats just great!
Are you guys assholes? At the bottom of the article it says:
