AT&T Samsung Epix i907 unboxing
Well, this has been a long time comin’, hasn’t it? We just got our grubby mitts on that much-debated Samsung Epix i907 and boy… it’s thick! Counting out the AT&T Tilt, this is probably the thickest phone in their line-up. Now, you do get Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with a touch screen with Haptic feedback, a QWERTY ‘board, optical mouse, 850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz HSDPA and GPS. So, for some, that might be enough of a reason to overlook the beast-like form of the Samsung Epix. We’re highly disappointed with the screen in general as it looks extremely dated and pixelated — much like the Samsung Omnia. We haven’t had much time to put the phone through our rigorous tests, so check out the unboxing shots in the meantime.

Granted the phone is nothing special at all, the touchpad is actually very nice to use. It’s so much better to navigate with that than it is with a D pad.

Just the shot on the box makes it look like a beast. Damn. (And this is coming from a Tilt owner)

i ditched my tilt after 10 months in august because of the massively awesome performance. i was an especially big fan of the lag after sliding it open. coupled with its brick-ness, i wasnt too disappointed mostly downgrading to the bj2.
obvious brick factor to the epix notwithstanding, i’ll enthusiastically give it a try.
i’m wondering why at+t didnt stay with the recognized blackjack name.

Is this the same as the i780? if so I dont remember the i780 being that thick- can someone confirm as I would rather buy an i780 if its thinner.
any other differences??
Thx

Are you sure it comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 and not Vista?

It came into the store today. The cursor is amazing but you have to make sure to start at the very bottom of the sensor if you want to make it all the way in one swipe. Touch screen is nice and has haptic feedback. Screen size is slightly larger than the blackjack 2 but the resolution seems to be a lot higher. It ran very smooth. Wi-Fi is still enabled, so no worries there. As for the thickness, BGR and EM have exaggerated a bit. It;s just as thick as the blackjack 2 at the fat part on the top where camera is. It’s actually a welcome addition as it makes it feel better in your hand. The stylus is teloscopic and feels a little cheep and is placed on the left side instead of the right. This seems to be fine as you would be holding it in your right hand to use the cursor and in your left hand when using the stylus. The power button is also on the side which makes it semi easy to hit when holding it in your left hand so just be careful. Solid performer.

Yeah, held it today. It’s a fat phone. It’s very responsive, so def better than the piece of shit that is the BlackJack2.

It doesn’t look *that* fat. What about all of the Palm devices on AT&T?

hey ii love my BJ 2 the battery life is way better than the tilt and the orignal BJ.

It also has a 50 % bigger battery than the i780 had (according to the ATT website (1800 mAh vs 1200 mAh for the i780)

It can be had for 99 bucks with a new contract (2 years) if purchased online..

DAS A HUGE BITCH!!!!
Yea…I think the best thing out there right now is an iPhone 3G and who knows how the Fuze will…Fuze with my mind but I think my next phone’s going to be a iP3G.

too bad. that’s probably the best part about the BJ1, how slim it is (with the standard battery).
is the screen 320×240 or 320×320?

didn’t this come out like a year ago in asia?
whatever. since the iphone came out, at&t’s winmo phone selection has grown kind of stale. and since june, at&t’s 3g coverage has really fallen apart in the boston area.
yeah - i’m looking forward to trying this omnia-not out.

It’s not a fucking blackjack. Epix is supposed to be the higher end smart phone they are placing above the blackjack. Those of you that are hating on this phone know that your ugly ass would let a fat bitch slob your nob anyday.

I played with it today and thought it was very nice!
It’s not as fat as bg is making it out to be. It’s comparable in size to the bjI with the extended battery (which I happened to like).
The “mouse” is actually quite awesome and makes using a windows mobile phone fun. It does have a touch screen but I felt that was almost useless as most things were easily done with the “mouse”.
For those that might not like the mouse, its an app that runs in the background and it allows you to change it into a standard four way pad.
The speed of the phone was quite nice as well!

I am from Asia and i own a i780. From the pictures, i have notice the following difference:
Epix is lacking the front camera, i780 has front camera. Epix LED is located at the top right, while i780’s is top left.
Epix is using an extended battery with extended battery cover and therefor it makes it look thicker than the i780.
The i780’s standard battery is thinner and doesn’t flush with the top. Epix is flush.
The i780 has a speaker phone at the back next to the camera, it Epix doesn’t.
Epix has a self potrait mirror, i780 doesn’t.
On the screen, the top bar on the Epix is thinner than on the i780, but the bottom is thicker on the Epix.
The Epix is 2 additional keys on the keyboard more than the i780. The 2 keys are on the last row. The i780 has a dedicated camera on the same side of the micro SD slot, the Epix is located on the other side, by the volumn button.
Location of the volumn button is different.

Again, BG gives an unfounded, scathing commentary that is completely false by any objective standard. This phone is one tenth of one inch fatter than the blackjack II and is the SAME width as the iphone 3G.
Here is a spec comparison that illustrates my point:
Epix - 4.6 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches (116 x 61 x 13 mm)
BJ II - 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches (112 x 58.5 x 10 mm)
iphone3G - 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches (115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm)
BB Storm - 4.4 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches (112.5 x 62.2 x 13.9 mm)
And, here are some BG comments, “boy… it’s thick! Counting out the AT&T Tilt, this is probably the thickest phone in their line-up” ; “…the beast-like form.”
BG, If you don’t like the square corners, comment on that. If you think it is important that a phone have a sexy design, and many would agree, then say the design is not at all sexy. I’m fine with this type of commentary, but saying it’s thicker than anything sans tilt or that it’s a beast is just stupid.
BG, your scoop prowess is second to none! I love that you get your leaked info and pics out to us gadgetphiles, but your reviews are some of the worst I have read. Keep up the great work with the scoops, but please stop with the flat-out-wrong commentary. Ask yourself if it is you or if it is true. You are clearly not misinformed, so it just seems like you are either being being lazy or deceptive.

I just learned of the Epix tonight…I havent seen one in person yet, but Im gonna check with the att store tomoro, if they are even out yet.
I am somewhat confused, because supposedly the BJ3 is/was supposed to come out in 2009…im wondering if that was rumor, or if that still is happening. Either way, im SUPER glad that they still have a qwerty board that is NOT on the touchscreen.

I bought the Epix yesterday. The phone is the same thickness as the original blackjack w/ extended battery. It really is not thick at all. It’s about the same as an iPhone…
In fact, it actually uses the same 1800mAh battery the original blackjack used… which is awesome since my wife and I had blackjacks so we both have 2 standard and 2 extended batteries. So now we have another extended. Plus we can use our blackjack Battery Charger Accessory to charge the battery without being in the phone.
And since I used the extended battery with my original blackjack, going to the Epix was easy.

I would think this would replace any need for a BJ3 without touchscreen.
BTW, I couldn’t get the images to load just now.
