AT&T holiday release schedule afterthought; Nokia 6650

After last night’s revelation that the Bold is finally going to drop on AT&T, it’s kind of hard to step back for a second and soak in the rest of the list. We did however, want to point something out that really is pretty big news. We’ve had a good idea that AT&T would be adding the Nokia 6650 to its arsenal at some point and now that we have confirmation of both timing and price, we have to say that this is pretty big news for our pals over in Finland. The 6650 might carry the same name as one of Nokia’s antique external antenna-rocking candy bars but this is not your Grandfather’s Nokia. This is a sleek, ultra-thin 3G clam shell with a sexy metal case and some great potential in the US market. A quick look at the specs:

  • GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, HSDPA 850 / 2100
  • 99.7 x 47 x 16.2 mm, 112 g
  • S60 3rd Edition OS, Feature Pack 2
  • 2.2-inch 240 x 320 pixel TFT display, 16M colors
  • Second external 128 x 160 pixel TFT display above three touch-sensitive buttons
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
  • 2 megapixel camera with flash
  • Integrated GPS
  • 1500 mAh battery (!)
  • Made entirely out of recyclable materials

In a nutshell, this is exactly what the N76 should have been. The kicker in all of this takes us back up to the leaked internal correspondence shown above. $70! That price point is amazing for any S60 device, let alone a new 3G clam shell with FP2 and sex appeal. If store reps do their duty and talk this puppy up, who in their right mind would take even a free RAZR when full-featured 3G smartphone with the same form factor and 1,000 times functionality is only $70 away? The Nokia 6650 is well-positioned to avenge the untimely death of the N75 we’re definitely rooting for it. As you can see above, it drops on November 4th so we might just have to swing by an AT&T store and snag one on our way home from the polls.

I thought the Eternity was the non smart phone version of the Omnia. Why does it say Slider Phone with Mobile TV? That is not the same phone as the pure touch screen seen here and on Engadget.

Hey, notice the Samsung Eternity is listed as a 3G SLIDER. All reports/photos form the tech blogs show it as a canybar like the instinct/omnia. So which is it?

Hmmm.. I dunno. This document still seems a little shakey to me.

“LG INCITE:3g phone – I do not have details on features or pricing yet”

Maybe the genius writer should have checked out the internet first..

    …and so on.

Once again the LG Xenon is absent on a list of expected phones!!! I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of this phone but still no sign that it’s coming, especially not “before Christmas”!!!
Does anyone have any news on this device?!

    @mas
Are you sure you don’t mean the the touchscreen phone from LG that was meant to look like the Samsung Omnia? If so, that would be the Incite.

And here is a link for the LG Invision (w/pictures and specs)…

Wow–6650 at $70! That’s pretty awesome! It really is what the N75 should have been, although ironically this isn’t an Nseries device.

    bobbie says:

not that many people will buy the 6650. Mainstream American consumers do not want s60 phones. Too clunky to use – the UIs are designed for fiddling with, not for super easy usage. Not disssing s60, just saying it won’t catch on with your average RAZR buyer.

HSDPA 2100? Is that a typo or does it mean ATT is rolling out 3G in 2100 band, so we might someday have the ability to use European phones? :P

    @ mikeisgood

the blackjack 3 actually turned out to be the samsung epix.

im starting to think that launching so many messaging phones at the same time is going to backfire when it comes to sales.

oh and why does it say the eternity is a slider? i hope it is cuz then T-Mobile willl be the only one with an all touch samsung touchscreen that uses the proprietary UI.

    Ricky says:

@bobbie – I think it’s rather interesting that you say that the RAZR crowd won’t go for a phone with clunky UI.

Personally, I highly doubt that most U.S. consumers will know – or care – that the phone uses S60. They’ll see a $70 phone with a real internet browser, built-in GPS, 2MP cam with flash, and MASSIVE battery, and be all over it like stains on a mattress.

S60 is the hidden bonus. ;)

    @Armo

Based on FCC Friday last week as posted on Engadget, it looks like the i627 is coming and would be a BJ3.

The Epix appears to be some sort of compromise of the BJ3 with a touchscreen ala i780.

It actually has 850/1900 mhz 3G… the UK version had the 2100… I’m totally getting this phone… I don’t care if anyone else buys it… more for me! (Although I only need one… or maybe two)

WHY did they have to cut out the date for the quickfire? I am getting so tired of waiting for it that I am thinking abut getting the cheaper Samsung Propel!

    EZ says:

this is a great device to get US dumbphone users to switch to S60.
once they get hooked and see the potential of S60 they will more than likely upgrade to a higher end Nokia S60 device.
Now, they Q is should i get it?
