Nokia N810 WiMAX edition is now in the hands of the people

n810 wimax

After months of waiting, the Nokia N810 WiMAX edition went live on Nokia’s online storefront this week. No longer “Available Soon” the WiMAX version of the popular Internet Tablet is now “In Stock” and ready for shipping. A member over at Internet Tablet Talk reported that he has already received his and, to everyone’s surprise, is able to connect to Chicago’s not-yet-launched Xohm WiMAX network. He had to work a little tomfoolery and enter in a Baltimore zip code during the activation process but now he is enjoying the WiMAX wireless experience in Chicago. Awesome! The N810 WiMAX edition is currently being offered with a $50 instant rebate, bringing the price down to $433 plus shipping. Just a heads up, Nokia still has the N810 classified as a “phone”. With this being the fourth version of the Internet Tablet, you would think they would have created a new category for this niche device. Alas, that is not the case so you will have to click, not run, to the online Nokia USA store, phone category please, and order yourself a heap of WiMAX Internet Tablet goodness.

Thanks, Mister Ecua.

Aside from the color and the WiMAX capabilities, it’s the same as the regular N810, right? Pardon my ignorance, just wondering since I have the non-WiMAX version, which works just fine tethered to my N95, but if this one has a faster processor or more RAM or anything like that I might be tempted to upgrade, assuming I could get a decent price for the one I have now.

Then again, it might not be worth the hassle…

@ Ev: I went to the Nokia store here in NYC to check it out about 2 weeks ago. Of course it wasnt there but your model was still on display. From what i was told the only difference was that the WiMax has a new antena!
In other words, the guy helping me didnt no shit about it!
But from the looks of the thing; along with reading the reviews and the Nokia web site; its a tad faster dew to new hardware and i think because the OS2008 isnt an up grade like on your model, may play in to the speed also.

As for me, i’m waiting til the rush to get one is over before i make purchase!(in other words i’m broke right now, LOL)

But read up on it dude!

@ Jeremiah: That is correct, apparently, even in cities that wasn’t even announced to be rolled out this year as well..

    Isn’t it awesome?

Chicago is very close to going to live. Motorola announced at the beginning of October that 600 Motorola Wimax base stations are live and ready for commercial service. everyone is waiting on sprint/xohm to officially launch.

H.N.I.C and EV — there’s absolutely zero hardware differences aside from the extra wimax antenna and a slight buldge in the back.

Nokia made sure to note that during the release. If you need more info on it, check out InternetTabletTalk or similar.

So, if you have the n810 — it won’t be any different [aside from the wimax portion].

These devices have never been phones, but Customer Access Devices that have a voice feature. They will eventually be all IP and Voice will be a simple VoiceIP solution operating over the Broadband Wireless Data networks. The Cell Carriers have made sure that this has been downplayed since with these new devices, and the Open Networks/APplications being professed, they lose control of their Voice service (major $$$)when everyone goes VoiceIP-just like the Carriers did to the local Dial tone providers-How does it feel VZW/AT&T?
